CongrATulATions To WesTAr serviCe TeChniCiAn JAmes DAffy, Who Along WiTh his TeAm hAs Been reCogniseD As The ‘BesT of The BesT’ When iT Comes To his isuzu serviCing skills.James recently won the prestigious National Technician of the Year award in the 2011 Isuzu Australia National Technical Competition.

As a result of his success, James headed off to Japan in December last year to participate in the 2011 Isuzu World Technical Competition.

James and his team pitted their skills against over 20 other teams from around the world in the ‘I-1 Grand Prix’ skills contest held at the Isuzu Kawasaki training centre in Tokyo.

Each team was required to complete a series of tests examining its measurement accuracy, vehicle inspection standards,

fault identification capability, repair ability and theoretical understanding.

After a gruelling contest James and his team had the prestigious honor of winning the ‘Golden Spanner Award’ – recognition of having the best service skills amongst the entire Isuzu Global Dealer Service Network.

AuTo klene, specialist supplier of cleaning and

detailing products for the automotive industry, has

recently taken delivery of their first isuzu truck – an

nPr 400 Premium with isuzu’s Automated manual

Transmission (AmT).

The truck is fitted out as a mobile showroom in order to showcase Auto Klene’s entire product range and this is reflected in the vibrant exterior signage and colour scheme.

Auto Klene products and services are used by a wide variety of businesses including car and truck dealers, various car hire companies, auction houses, marinas and commercial car washes. Auto Klene are now the Australian distributor of Turtle Wax Professional Car Care products.

The new Isuzu is the first of a series of larger trucks that Auto Klene are planning to purchase over the coming years to cope with the increased demand they are experiencing for it’s extensive range of car detailing products – the vast majority of which are manufactured locally at its plant in Dandenong, Victoria.

Auto Klene have an ongoing commitment to

the environment, and this is reflected in the fact that many products are bio-degradable and the company is continually looking at ways to replace the use of chemicals with more friendly organic based products.

Director Paul Treverton, who purchased the truck from Patterson Cheney Isuzu, reports that the purchase process went without a hitch and he intends taking the truck back to the dealer for its scheduled services.

Paul reports that feedback from his driver is very positive – whilst initially skeptical of an auto transmission the driver is now very much a convert after experiencing the relaxed ease of driving that Isuzu’s AMT provides in stop start traffic.

Now operated by son Romeo and wife Linda, the business has expanded to include a full garden supplies business which caters to the growing landscape side of the business. The nursery has steadily increased its offering over the years to include an extensive selection of flowers, trees, plants and shrubs.

All Green also supply fruit trees and are one of the major suppliers of palm trees in Melbourne which have become very popular in recent years. The palm trees are supplied through All Green’s Queensland nursery.

The company supplies both domestic and trade customers in metro and outer metro areas of Melbourne and Geelong. The size of the business is evidenced by its land area

of 5 acres, a support staff of 60 people and a fleet of around twenty five trucks including light, medium and heavy duty Isuzus.

Owner Romeo Fragapane has noticed a change over the years in the willingness of people to invest heavily in their gardens and this has been reflected in the continued growth of his business.

The company has used Isuzus since day one – the N Series used predominantly for domestic applications whilst the heavy duty Giga models service the trade and wholesalers, supplying rock, soil and sand direct to the site from the quarry.

The trucks are worked hard, regularly putting in 8-9 hour days with ongoing

deliveries across Melbourne. A relatively new two year old truck has recently clocked up over half a million kilometres.

“I’ve always had an excellent run with the Isuzus and that’s why I keep buying them,” Romeo said. “They’re very comfortable and I find them extremely reliable – they also stand up well to the rigours of garden supplies work,” Romeo went on to say.

“My staff also enjoy driving the Isuzus which is an important consideration,” said Romeo.

Due to the nature of the work, all the trucks are fitted with tipper bodies.

“We’ve bought all our trucks through Westar, initially from Footscray and now

from the new truck centre at Derrimut. We’ve always received excellent service from all the personnel in both the sales and service departments which is something I value,” Romeo added.

Romeo is a firm believer in regular preventative maintenance and all his trucks return to Westar for servicing – no doubt an important factor in the outstanding reliability that Romeo has experienced over the years.

Ken has a long history in the transport business and was involved with the company run by his father and brothers, Trans United Transport, up until the late 80’s when the company was sold.

Ken started Kellara in the early ‘90’s, when he sensed an opportunity existed in the area of specialised and over-dimensional transport – something which has been proven correct given the growth of the company since its formation.

Today Kellara transports products all over Tasmania as well as interstate – across the Tasman and the Nullabor to Western Australia and all the way up to Queensland.The variety of loads carried and transported is extensive. In addition to general cartage the loads often comprise over-sized and heavy duty equipment, machinery, houses, portable office buildings and boats.

To cater to these unique loads the company has a number of highly specialised trailers including tilt slide trailers, tilt trays, drop and flat deck extendable trailers, a quad axle float and dolly and a number of truck and trailer units with truck mounted cranes.

A lot of Ken’s work also revolves around the recovery of heavy duty machinery and trucks. One of Ken’s driver’s, Wally, was the initial reason Ken first considered the purchase of an MAN.

Wally had seen the MAN at Agfest and was impressed and this prompted Ken to take a closer look. At the time Ken needed a prime mover with a sleeper cab given his long interstate trips.

After looking at their requirements, Ken negotiated with Phil Salter of Westar and selected a TGX 26.540 with an XL sleeper cab. “Phil has been great to deal with throughout the whole purchase process, and I’m very happy with the MAN to date,” said Ken.

To say Ken’s driver Wally is happy with the MAN is something of an understatement.

With 47,000kms under his belt in just a few short months, Wally is over the moon with the new MAN TGX which he gets to drive.

“One of my first big trips was to Perth and I found out quickly she’s a bloody beauty to drive. The comfort and quietness is just outstanding – all in all it’s just a beautiful cab environment,” Wally said. “I’m absolutely rapt with it,” he added.

“It took a bit of getting used to an automatic transmission given I’ve been driving manuals for years but it didn’t take me long to appreciate how good the 12 speed auto is,” Wally went on to say.

Given the MAN’s performance to date Ken reckons he will certainly be considering additional MANs for his future fleet requirements.

Western star DeLIVerInG tHe GOODs FOr Mt nOOrat FreIGHters

The family owned and operated business is managed by brothers Tony and Ray Moloney with assistance from their wives. The company has its origins in Maloney Produce which commenced business in 1960. Moloney Produce was involved with the purchase, selling and cartage of grain.

In 1996 Tony and Ray sold out the produce side of the business to another stock feed company, Ridley Group, but retained the transport side of the company and hence Mt Noorat Freighters was born.

The dairy industry is now the main focus for the company. There are two main parts to the business; firstly, the cartage of grains and other raw materials to stock feed producers’ processing mills where they are turned into dairy pellets for stockfeed and secondly, the cartage and delivery of the stock feed to

dairy farms throughout the eastern seaboard. A wide variety of stockfeed pellets are produced to cater to the dietary requirements of cattle over the course of the year.

The company also has on-site storage facilities that can take up to 9,000 tonnes of grain. Its location is a plus for farmers as it puts the stored grain within easy reach of several stock feed mills located in the nearby area.

The company has grown steadily over the 15 years and now operates a fleet of 20 late model prime movers – varying in size from 15 to 45 tonnes, offering flexibility in terms of load size and type of load which can be carried.

The company’s range of trailers includes Bulk Haulage Tippers, Blower Equipped Tippers, and Walinga multi-compartment feed-trailers. The versatile fleet gives clients many choices in the quantity they can order and from which company they can purchase the product.

The company purchased its first Western Star around 5 years ago and since then has gone on to purchase another four – a mix of day and sleeper cab models. Tony runs a mixture of Cummins and Detroit engines.

“There’s a lot to like about the Western Stars – they’re good quality trucks with great back up and service. Drivers love them too. The interior quietness, the roomy cab, the comfortable ride, are just some of the things drivers tell me they like about the Western Star,” Tony went on to say.

“We’re finding that drivers who used to have a preference for the other brand we operate are now saying they want a Western Star!” Tony added.

All the trucks were purchased from Westar where Tony was looked after by sales consultant James Leo. “I couldn’t be happier with the service I have received from James at Westar – he’s just been excellent each time we’ve dealt with him,” Tony added.

Business is good for Mt Noorat Freighters and Tony certainly sees additional Western Stars being included on the fleet in coming years.

PTF franchisee Martin Iacuone has owned and operated the Mornington outlet for over 3 years and late last year was in the market for a new Ute to replace his ageing cab chassis model.

“I wanted to get a dual purpose vehicle that I could use for both work and with the family at the weekend and Crew Cab Utes with their 4 door, 5 seat capacity fitted the bill perfectly,” Martin said.

He looked at a number of models but settled on the D-Max LS 4x4 Crew Cab due to its excellent range of standard features, its towing capacity and the deal that he struck with Paterson Cheney Isuzu Ute.

Martin selected the manual version as he does around 1,000km a week – “Given the mileage I do I’d get bored with an automatic!” Martin laughs.

Martin picked up the D-Max in September 2011 having bought the vehicle through sales consultant Travis Jamieson who

he described as being very helpful throughout the purchase process – Martin’s thrilled with the all round performance and quality of the vehicle to date.

Martin regularly tows a tandem trailer so D-Max’s class leading towing capacity has proven a winner. “I tow loads of two to two and a half tonnes and even with that weight the D-Max doesn’t miss a beat – it feels like I haven’t even got a load at the back it’s that good - the turbo diesel engine just makes it effortless,” Martin added.

The big interior space is another thing that Martin is impressed with and even though he is continually towing, he still gets a very respectable 650-700 kms per tank of diesel.

With its distinctive full black vinyl wrap promoting Perfect Timber Floors, there’s no missing Martin’s D-Max on the roads around Mornington.
