I n addition to celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, 2014 provided amazing experiences, accomplishments and expanded the TRTA family through new friendships and partnerships. It is in thanks to all of you who provided support to our organization through your membership, volunteer efforts and goodwill that we are able to steward our trail like no other upon which so many are able to find a bit of balance.

This year we built and maintained 15.5 miles of trail, including the new trail to the top of Mt. Houghton as the final piece of the Rim to Reno Project and major reconstruction on the Marlette Peak Trail in the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park which reopened the trail to equestrians and mountain bikes.

Over 1,300 participants enjoyed a multitude of public hikes, Trailside Ed and Youth Backcountry Camps. In our 2nd year of the Tahoe Rim Trail Challenge, over 500 new members and 17 corporate sponsors enjoyed the challenge, hiking over 3,000 miles! Many of the corporate sponsors are already signed up for 2015 as their corporate health and wellness program.

As we complete our planning for 2015, I am struck by the boundless energy and enthusiasm of our staff, board and volunteers who make everything we do possible. It is through this dedication and the financial support of all our wonderful donors and members that the Tahoe Rim Trail Association is able to meet our mission and provide that chance for so many to escape the distractions of our daily lives, follow the lure, round the next bend to find that place of rest.

YOUTH BACKCOUNTRY CAMPS ARE BACK FOR 2015! Registration will open February 4th, 2015 at 10:00 AM PST for our five summer Youth Backcountry Camps (YBCC). Our YBCC program offers teens, ages 12-17, the opportunity to leave their electronics at home and connect with the natural beauty of the Lake Tahoe region. Participants will backpack through iconic sections of the Tahoe Rim Trail and learn from our expert guides Sierra Nevada natural history, emergency preparedness, and the basics on how to safely and enjoyably navigate the Sierra Nevada!

A nother trail season is under our belt and we have our 2,100 members and hundreds of volunteers to thank for its success! From trailhead outreach to special events - we couldnt do what we do without your support. Check out how your membership dollars were put to work this year by helping provide outstanding outreach & programming:

1,111 people were reached with information about the TRT at community outreach events in the Reno, Tahoe, and Sacramento areas!

50 volunteers joined the TRTA Trail User Survey on July 26th at 14 TRT trailheads and surveyed over 537 of our trail users. Thank you to everyone who helped provide critical feedback and suggestions for better public access to our various trailheads.

7 public libraries hosted Tahoe Rim Trail displays to help further our outreach efforts about the Tahoe Rim Trail!

On October 8th the Tahoe Rim Trail Association hosted our Annual Meeting at the Lakeview Lodge at the top of the Heavenly Tram. In addition to a fun night with fellow trail users, volunteers, members, and donors, the TRTA board presented awards to some outstanding individuals and groups.

The Tahoe Rim Trail Challenge was warmly received for its second year by over 465 Trail Challengers! Families, corporations, individuals, businesses and teams all stepped up to this years challenge and tracked over 3,000 miles trekked along the Tahoe Rim Trail! This year, each challenge site promised something amazing: Stunning vistas, historical sites, rocky terrain, lush meadows and clear alpine lakes. Not to mention, over 265 people joined us at one of our beloved, Wheres McLeod? Giveaway Days as they searched for trail mascot, McLeod the Marmot!

We couldnt have done any of this without the support of 17 local businesses & corporations who supported the program financially: REI, NV Energy, KPS3, CA Technologies, Desert Research Institute, KOLO8 News Now, Hometown Health, Wells Fargo, Sunshine Tahoe, Squeeze In, NC Communications, Tahoe Trail Bar, Spin Games, Tahoe Mountain Sports, Yesco Outdoor Media, Coffeebar and North American Embroidery. Completing the entire 165+ miles of the Tahoe Rim Trail is no easy feat! Each year, though, our 165 Mile Club adds more hardy folks to its ranks. Below are the 2014 additions to the 165 Mile Club as of October 28, 2014

We would also like to thank Mikenna Dudley, our 2013-2014 AmeriCorps Volunteer for her incredible service. Mikenna served 1,700 hours with the TRTA working on various Trail Use programs and specializing on Youth Backcountry Camps (YBCC). Assisting Mikenna with our Youth Backcountry Camps was Marie Gauer. Marie completed a summer internship with the TRTA to help facilitate YBCC. We sadly said goodbye to Mikenna and Marie this fall and wish them the best of luck on their next endeavors!

It always amazes me what can be accomplished with a shared mission. With only six staff at the TRTA Office, the Trail Use program accomplished extraordinary feats this year thanks to 62 volunteers who gave 3,525 hours in support of Trail Use programs. These contributions allowed the TRTA to successfully offer 26 Public Hikes, two Thru Hikes, two 13-week Segment Hikes, four Youth Backcountry Camps, several backcountry skills courses, and outdoor education presentations.

Through these efforts, we reached 532 adults and 916 youth including 281 at-risk youth. However,

program support doesnt stop there. We owe a big thanks to our partner organizations including Explore Tahoe, Tahoe Institute for Natural Science, Sugar Pine Foundation, Alpenglow Sports, American Red Cross, the Boys and Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe and many others. The greater Lake Tahoe region is definitely blessed with an abundance of good people looking out for the betterment of our community and the TRTA. I look forward to seeing what grand efforts will come out of 2015.

A t some point growing up I was disheartened to learn that I did not possess super powers. That my leap off the roof would not result in a death defying flight towards the ground with a graceful upswing to the stars a la superman but rather just the death defying flight towards the ground part and a crash landing on the lawn. With my dreams of swinging between buildings on my spidey web dashed, I moved on to the practicalities of life: superheroes live in comic books not the real world.

Fortunately my time at the TRTA, has mended my jaded ways. Im around superheroes every day! It is generally held that superheroes possess the following five key

characteristics: they never give up, they always get the job done, they help others, their real strength comes not from their power but from their character, and of course number five: they achieve huge feats! Our trail building volunteers fit the bill. In 2014 the Trail Operations program built and maintained 15.53 miles of trail with highlights including new trail to Mt. Houghton Summit, reconstruction of steps up to Big Meadow, new causeways near Watson Lake to keep the trail out of the mud, and trail reconstruction at Marlette Peak. In total over 9,600 hours were contributed to making the Tahoe Rim Trail a world class trail experience for our over 100,000 users. Especially heroic were the efforts of our Crew Leaders, basically our superhero ring leaders. These 29 volunteers managed over 350 volunteers in the field to efficiently, effectively, and safely complete our 2014 trail building and maintenance objectives. You all make my spidey sense tingle!

A Look Back at Summer 2014

For most fifteen year olds, living in beautiful Lake Tahoe is but a dream! For Kai Mangiaracina, Lake Tahoe has always been home! This summer Kai decided to take on an adventure close to home that would challenge his will and determination. He was one of forty Youth Backcountry Campers (YBCC) who journeyed into Tahoes rugged backcountry and discovered exactly what the beautiful Sierra has to offer-stunning views, crisp alpine lakes, challenging climbs and a once in a lifetime experience with peers his own age!

Hiking and exploring trails in Lake Tahoe is something Kai has always enjoyed, but camping overnight for five days was completely new for him. Like most teens, he was a little nervous as to what to expect. The first few days were the hardest with fatigue setting in as he got used to carrying a heavy pack. With support from his fellow campers, Kai soon settled into the groove and began loving everything about the experience. He especially loved swimming in the alpine lakes and climbing Mt. Tallac. I had a lot of fun and made new friends! The best thing about YBCC was it taught me how to act and think on my own without my parents around. I learned the importance of being mentally and physically strong in order to meet the challenges the trail brought us.

Youth Backcountry Camp had a direct impact on Kais life. He enjoyed his experience so much that he plans to get out on the trail again next summer, but this time as a volunteer trail worker to give back to the trail!

Looking For The Perfect Gift?

On October 19th, the TRTA took a break from our normal crazy schedule of trailbuilding, outreach, events, and public hikes to enjoy a night out with our volunteers. Guides, Crew Leaders, and outreach volunteers joined us at the Valhalla Grand Hall on the shore of Lake Tahoe where the staff cooked everyone dinner and took the opportunity to say thanks!
