Hi and welcome to another issue of TRQ.
First of all, I’d like to take the opportunity to say a big thanks to all who read our inaugural issue and gave us such great feedback. We’re planning to make TRQ even bigger and better, so stay tuned!
In this issue, we meet a legend of the South Australian racing industry. Known better as ‘Squid’, Peter Kemp is a shining example of what makes country racing in SA so great.

Cinema series…
The Thoroughbred Racing SA crew had a great time running the “Moonlight Cinema Cup” with help from Cosi from SAFM. We gave away heaps
of prizes including tickets to the Adelaide Cup and Oakbank Easter Carnival plus other goodies such as picnic blankets and torches. More than 3500 enjoyed our racing under the stars, and chances are we’ll be doing it all again next year - so look forward to seeing you then!

utumn is upon us and while for some it means a slow wind-down from the
summer party months, the local racing season is only just winding up with some of the highlights of 2010 racing calendar set for the coming months.
From the vibrant, colourful atmosphere of the 2010 Adelaide Cup to the traditional family fun of the largest picnic race meeting in the world at Oakbank – autumn provides a prime opportunity to enjoy some of the best events SA racing has to offer.
But with the change of seasons comes a change of weather – so what’s the best way to get ‘glammed’ up for the conditions while remaining super sleek and stylish?

Renowned local designer Liza Emanuele says the races are all about looking classy and stylish – while dressing appropriately and having some fun with your look.
“Autumn really is trans-seasonal, it’s generally neither hot nor cold – giving racegoers the opportunity to have some fun with their outfits,” Liza said.
“There is nothing worse than seeing a girl not dressed appropriately for the conditions and as such being overdressed or underdressed.
“For race wear, dresses are still the go but cardigans are the perfect addition to those summer dresses through to
autumn – especially for the cold morning starts at Oakbank.”
While summer saw a dominance of oranges and corals, Liza says blue will be the hit for autumn – with numerous tones on offer to suit various tastes and skin colourings.
“Blue hues will dominate autumn fashion, from navy to royal blue – which we haven’t seen since the 80s,” she said.
“Print wise – I’m a fan of clashing prints, it makes things a bit exciting.
“Mixing stripes and florals together will add some interest to your outfit.”
When it comes to accessories, Liza recommends keeping it simple and choosing accessories based on the race meeting at hand.
“Fascinators and headpieces are best saved for more formal events like the Adelaide Cup while hats are a good addition to any race day outfit – just ensure that the hat is a comfortable one to wear,” Liza said.
“Unless it is a burning hot day, closed-toe shoes are a must for autumn racing events – they look classy and are practical for the conditions.”

universally known as ‘Squid’.
Port Lincoln identity Peter Kemp has been in love with horses and racing since his childhood, but nicknames stick and he’ll forever be linked to his early days selling seafood.
Peter, who was named Thoroughbred Racing SA’s 2009 Volunteer of the Year, has been Chairman of his beloved Port Lincoln Racing Club for a record 18 years straight.
“I put my hand up for the job for one year, and I’ve been doing it ever since,” Peter laughed.
“It’s a very, very good club and we’re lucky in Port Lincoln to have such a wonderful course.
“I’ve seen no better facilities at any country track in Australia. It’s second to none - beautiful.”
Peter’s deep connection to horse racing isn’t just about administration.
His father own horses and he preceded Squid on to the committee at Port Lincoln.
From 1978 to 81, Peter was a licensed trainer and his first starter was a winner; Ben Dan running at Port Lincoln.
He’s owned a few fair gallopers in his time as well, including Permafrost which was named SARCC Horse of the Year in 2000.
“I have always simply had a love of the sport,” Squid said.
“I think that 98% of the people involved in racing are wonderful, and it seems to be the same wherever you go. People who enjoy the racing, and have a bit of a drink and a bet. You’ve always got something in common.”
Now aged 73, Squid has decided to step down as Chairman at Port Lincoln at the end of the 2010 racing season.
“I think I’ve done my bit and I am getting a little bit long in the tooth,” he said.
But he’s only leaving the committee room. He’ll never leave the sport.

With better training and breeding, are horses getting quicker?
If you take a look back at the record books, it will suggest that horses have been gradually getting faster over time. With all the technology and research available to breeders and trainers today, there is a theory that horses have now evolved to a point where they cannot physically get any faster. I suppose time will tell!
I heard that horses sometimes carry weights in races – how does this work and how much weight do they carry?
All horses are allocated a weight before each race. The weighting system in Australia generally falls under two categories; Handicaps and Weight For Age. Handicap racing is when the better-credentialed horses have to carry more weight than the lesser performed ones, and is designed to give every horse an equal chance of winning. Weight For Age racing is where horses carry a certain weight according to their age and sex. Most of the time the jockeys will be lighter than the horse’s allocated weight which means they must make up the difference by carrying a lead bag in their saddles. Jockeys must ‘weigh in’ with the stewards before and after each race to ensure they are carrying the correct weight.
In Sydney and Brisbane where the track goes clockwise (as opposed to Melbourne and Adelaide where they run anti clockwise), can a horse run as well in either of those circumstances? if so do they need extra time for training and preparation?
This all depends on the individual. Generally speaking, if a horse is used to running anti-clockwise and they switch to clockwise, they will need
some extra training and practice to perform at their best. Some training facilities, such as Lindsay Park, have tracks that teach horses to run in both directions from an early age.
Why do horses train early in the morning?
Horses have always been trained early in the morning for several reasons. We race seven days a week in Australia, which means the work needs to be done before the race meetings commence. Other factors such as use of public facilities and the heat are reasons for trainers and their staff starting as early as 4am.
Are stallions, mares or geldings better racers?
The beauty about racing is that there is no certainty. Past champions such as Makybe Diva (mare), Lonhro (stallion) and Takeover Target (gelding) have proven this. Normally geldings are the easiest horses to train and will have more longevity on the track because they haven’t got their minds on other things!
