Trove Tips -1

• Start with a broad search then narrow using filters on Trove

• You can browse or search newspapers

• Use inverted commas to enclose phrases

• Boolean searches

• AND, OR and NOT and brackets to create boolean expressions. You can use a minus sign next to the word in place of NOT

• Try variations of surnames, e.g. Halloran, O’Halloran

Trove Tips -2• Do a NEAR search for names with the tilde key (~),

which will pick up names within 2 workds of each other d.g. “Sharon Brennan”~2

• Search for family name plus town of residence

• Don’t restrict searches to local newspapers - interstate papers often reported on news from other areas

• Search for photos of Churches, Towns of significance to the family

• Check for funeral was well as death notices - there may only have been one

Trove Tips -3

• Repeat searches on a regular basis as new content is added regularly

• Use Trove to date newspaper clippings found amongst family papers

• Paste corrected text from Trove into a note in your genealogy program

• Regularly check the list of newspapers which have been recently digitised

Trove Tips -4• Use the RSS Feed button from the bottom of search results

screens to get updates for topics you have searched

• Read the news of the day for a family event - to give social context

• Check the weather of the day for a family event - further context

• Zooming to about 65% makes newspaper articles easy to read
