These forest are found in hot and wet equatorial regions

characterised by heavy rainfall. Also known as tropical

rainforest or selvas, they are found in Southeast Asia,

Africa along the Congo river basin, Papua New Guuinea,

many of the Pacific Islands and South America along the

Amazon and Orinoco river basin.

Location

VegetationThe vegetation in these forest forms a canopy and has alayered structure with tall tree, tree of medium height,shrubs, creepers, grasses, ferns, mosses and fungi. In the dry season too, the trees do not shed their leaves altogether and so, the forest appear evergreen. Hardwood trees like mahogany ,ebony, rosewood and rubber are commonly found in these forest.

The vegetation is dense and the thick canopy on the top prevent the penetration of Sunlight, thus hamperingthe development of undergrowth.

ClimateThese region experience hot and humid climate

withheavy rainfall throughout the year thus

encouraging growth of dense evergreen vegetation.

Wildlife The dark, damp forests are home to a rich variety of wildlife like, monkey, apes, gorillas, elephant, and snake such as the anaconda and python. Colourful birds such as parrots, pigeons, toucans, hornbills,

Abundance while pumas and

jaguars are common on land.

A huge variety of insects

such as great millipedes,

leeches, beetle, spiders,

butterflies, moth, bats

and lizards also live

among the fallen leaves.

Swamp abound in

turtles, crocodiles and

alligator.
