MARKE TING COMMUNICAT IO NS
This atmospheric painting is of a Florida landscape
over the marshlands with two egrets feeding in the
water. S. Prather has been associated with the
Florida Highwayman.
The Highwaymen Artists were a group of self-
taught African American artists during the 1950s,
60s, and 70s who have come to be known as the
“Florida Highwaymen” artists. The Highwaymen
were painters depicting the Florida landscape of
the mid 20th century. They were highly influenced
by the “Dean of Florida painting” Albert E Backus,
a professional fine artist who took classes at the
Parsons School of Art in New York. He was widely
known for his Floridian landscapes and his work
both taught and influenced the Highwaymen. The
group of artists was young entrepreneurs; most had
previously worked as orange pickers until learning
the fundamentals of painting. They gained the
name “Highwaymen” because they would paint at
night and then sell their paintings to individuals
and corporations out of the trunks of their cars,
traveling the length of the state to do so.

The artist owns and operates the Keith Martin Johns Fine Art Collection of Florida Paintings showcased at the Art Design Center in Graceville, FL. Johns began his career with a vision for a spiritual journey and describes his calling was “greater than anything that I could imagine for myself.” The artist will be developing the new Fine Art Department at the Baptist College of Florida where he is collaborating to teach the methods and discipline of classical painting, along with philosophical and theological studies. He is interested in Old Master techniques including perspective, atmospheric interference, and chiaroscuro (the study of light and shadow).
This reproduction is from an idyllic and sweeping Florida landscape painting and depicts a sanctuary of pristine salt marshes and estuaries. A sunset backdrop highlights the abounding drama and wonder. Great White Heron and a pair of nesting Osprey are featured as an intricate part of the diverse ecosystems of flora and fauna of the natural world. This is also reminiscent of the paintings of the early American “Manifest Destiny” artists, relaying God’s presence in nature proved man’s superiority and destiny to expand new lands.

Molly Mabe is a Tallahassee artist who is inspired by Asian screen and scroll landscape paintings. She often employs expanded length or size to better capture the limits of light. This influence transcends into this quintessential Florida landscape of a cropped palm tree, with a beach’s horizon view as backdrop. Mabe says, “The power of the earth and the way it is interpreted through time energize my work. My paintings seek to explore the outer boundaries of the landscape, to test the edges at the round earth’s imagined corners. The interior landscape of my paintings concern the transcendent aspects of experience.”

Photographer Thomas Eads explores wild areas of
the US Southeast coastal lowlands. He captures the
serenity and sanctuary of the remaining unspoiled
environments. These oversized and panoramic images
function as a window in time to the untouched, natural
environment and ecosystems all around us. The mood
of his landscapes is informed by his profound sense
of the interconnectedness of things: latitude, altitude,
landform, soils, hydrology, plant and animal life,
solar radiation, weather, tides, and the playing-out of
unresolved potentials, including human intentions.

A simple image can become something unique when color, intensity, and imagination are allowed to seek new boundaries. John Douglas works in digital fine art imagery and scanography and is an award-winning photographic artist. The Tallahassee artist is a member of the Digital Artists’ Guild of The Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts Artists’ League and is a native Floridian. He modifies the image by using light and color in various ways to create a unique visual impression that transcends traditional photography. This trilogy portrays the majestic Sabal Palm of Myakka River State Park. It is Pop Art inspired in its use of strong hues, repetition, and iconic imagery.

The Tallahassee artist describes this work as “a bird
family of four enjoying the day together, nestled in the
grass.” This whimsical piece seems akin to an endearing
folklore story, and she explains the impetus and story
behind creating the painting:
“Birds intrigue me, and are just about my favorite
subject matter to paint. While sometimes in my work you
can tell what kind of bird it is, often I prefer attempting
to capture the spirit and essence of my subject.” She
loves experimenting with her technique. She uses hard-
bodied acrylics applied onto the surface of wood with a
variety of brushes and pallet knives. She then scrapes,
sands and glazes numerous layers to build the intensity
and brilliance of color. “I love painting on wood because
of the texture with acrylics, mixing glazes and layering to
bring a painting alive.”

Painted circa 2012
Medium Acrylic on Canvas
Size Height 24 in.; Width 18 in.
PROVENANCE:
Collection of Tom and Sandy DeLopez
Estimated Value: $1,200Reserve: $500
Sandy DeLopez began focusing on her painting after retirement, describing it as the beginning of “[her] own personal renaissance.” She says, “Interpreting the joy of living through painting is meaningful to me, not just a hobby. I am moved to draw or paint people, nature, still life, and landscapes as part of everyday life. I have always loved looking at and studying art.”
This young male Roseate Spoonbill is building a nest in a coastal cypress tree in hopes of impressing a female to join him and start a brood. The image draws inspiration from a rookery near St. Augustine, which is famous for its nesting water birds. Roseate Spoonbills can be seen in several of Florida’s coastal preserves, including St. Marks Wildlife Refuge, but their rookeries are limited and difficult to access. In the 1800s, they were hunted almost to extinction for their wing feathers, which were fashionable in women’s hats and fans. They are a rare treat to see in flight with their four foot wingspans. Even James John Audubon included this exquisite bird (Plate 45) in his “Birds of America,” also known as the Elephant Folio (1827-1838).

This abstract expressionistic painting explodes with
free forms of grays and greens. The Tallahassee
artist describes himself as a minimalist by aesthetic
preference, although his profession as an attorney
requires a great deal of organization and planning. He
notes: “With my artwork, I plan very little and try to avoid
organization. I feel it gives me an outlet to really just let
things happen organically. For this piece, I really liked
the base colors and wanted to create a soothing feel by
letting them work together on the canvas.”

Pop-like image interweaves a stylized cowgirl figure that

Leila LaCrosse is a Tallahassee artist who paints primarily in the abstract expressionist style. She enjoys experimenting with different media and her paintings are deeply intuitive and reflect visual interpretation of the world around her. Her art is also inspired and influenced by her training as a musician and pianist. She says, “Each painting tells a story on its own, and the pleasure for me is to form a connection with the viewer in a way that evokes emotion, reflection and thought.” LaCrosse’s work has been on exhibit all throughout Florida and southern Georgia, as well as in Los Angeles.
This abstract painting envelops a symphony of grays with an unexpected pop of orange. The artist describes the work as “The sounds and colors of an overcast day in winter.”

Clyde describes the story behind the photograph:
“My journey of exploration along the Apalachicola River and into the marvelous tributaries of the river has shown me some of the most beautiful country since my exploration of Big Cypress National Preserve. It does my soul good to know there is another place in Florida where the environment is still very much in its natural state. The apprehension over rapid growth, pollution from Georgia, and the dredging of the river are concerns to everyone who live and work with the Apalachicola River. It is my hope that by sharing the beauty of the region with you that you will see the need to keep it in its natural biological condition for future generations to enjoy. The river’s source is north of Atlanta. It flows through Georgia as the Chattahoochee River and when it crosses the border into the Panhandle of Florida it becomes the Apalachicola River. The river continues to the Gulf, passing the quaint fishing village of Apalachicola.” Clyde Butcher
Info on book: Published in 2006, Apalachicola River: An American Treasure consists of photographs taken while Clyde was working on the PBS documentary with Elam Stolzfus of Live Oak Productions. The book measures 10”x12” with eighty-one pages and 52 photographs, including five spreads and two pages of fun snap shots by Niki Butcher.
