Position Descriptions

LEADER REQUIREMENTS/EXPECTATIONS

•Attendance: 75% or more or all Troop Meetings and events

•Uniform: ALWAYS worn correctly – shirt, neckerchief, pants

•Rank: Varies by position (expected to be working actively on personal rank advancement)

•Tenure: Typically 6 months

•Behavior: Live by Scout Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan – must be a scout in good standing with the Troop

SENIOR PATROL LEADER

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The senior patrol leader is elected by the Scouts to represent them as the top youth leader in the troop.

REPORTS TO: The Scoutmaster and Asst. Scoutmasters

RESPONSIBLE TO: Scoutmasters, JLC and Troop

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

•Star Scout or higher (preferred) with experience as ASPL or PL

•JLT Training, preferred NYLT training also

•Actively working on personal rank advancement

SENIOR PATROL LEADER

GENERAL DUTIES:

•Runs/leads troop meetings, events, activities, and the annual program planning.

•Works with ASPL to appoint troop QM, Scribe, Historian, Librarian, Chaplain’s Aid and other troop junior leaders. (Picks those right for the job – not his buddies or popular scouts.)

•Runs/leads the patrol leaders' council meeting. Prepares in advance for meetings.

•Assigns/shares duties and responsibilities with ASPL & PL’s. Communicates with JLC to make sure tasks are assigned and being completed.

•Continues leader training

•Generates ideas

•Sets a good example.

•Enthusiastically wears the Scout uniform correctly

•Lives by the Scout Oath and Law

•Shows Scout spirit

SENIOR PATROL LEADER

CAMPOUT DUTIES:

•Reviews weekend plans on way

•Assigns locations of patrols with input of ASPL and PL’s

•Makes sure troop gear is unloaded/organized in common area

•Makes sure patrols have posted duty rosters and menus

•Leads scouts on activities

•Helps teach skills

•Helps PL’s settle disputes

ASSISTANT SENIOR PATROL LEADER

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The assistant senior patrol leader is the second highest-ranking youth leader in the troop. He is appointed by the senior patrol leader with the approval of the Scoutmaster. The assistant senior patrol leader acts as the senior patrol leader in the absence of the senior patrol leader or when called upon. He also provides leadership to other youth leaders in the troop.

REPORTS TO: The senior patrol leader

RESPONSIBLE TO: SPL, Scoutmaster, Asst. Scoutmasters and Troop

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

•First Class Scout or higher (preferred) with experience as PL or APL

•JLT Training

•75% attendance or higher at all meetings and events over past 6 months

•Actively working on personal rank advancement

ASSISTANT SENIOR PATROL LEADER

GENERAL DUTIES:

•Helps the senior patrol leader lead meetings and activities.

•Prepares in advance for and actively participates in JLC meetings.

•Prepares room for activities prior to meeting with SPL and PL’s.

•Runs the troop in the absence of the senior patrol leader.

•Helps select, train and supervise the troop scribe, quartermaster, instructor, librarian, historian, and chaplain's aide with SPL.

•Serves as a member of the patrol leaders' council.

•Actively continues with leader training.

•Sets a good example.

•Enthusiastically and correctly wears the Scout uniform.

•Lives the Scout Oath and Law.

•Shows Scout spirit.

•Lends a hand controlling the patrol and building patrol spirit.

•Wears the uniform correctly.

ASSISTANT SENIOR PATROL LEADER

CAMPOUT DUTIES:

•Reviews weekend plans on way with SPL

•Works with SPL to assign locations of patrols with input of PL’s

•Makes sure troop gear is unloaded/organized in common area

•Initiates gathering of wood and fire building with help of other scouts

•Assists SPL leading scouts on activities

•Helps teach skills

PATROL LEADER

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The patrol leader is the elected leader of his patrol. He represents his patrol on the patrol leaders’ council.

REPORTS TO: The senior patrol leader or ASPL

RESPONSIBLE TO: SPL, ASPL, Scoutmasters, Patrol and Troop

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

•First Class or higher rank (preferred)

•No previous leader experience required

•75% or higher attendance at all meetings/events over past 6 months

•JLT Training

•Actively working on personal rank advancement

PATROL LEADER

GENERAL DUTIES:

•Appoints the assistant patrol leader.

•Represents the patrol on the patrol leaders’ council.

•Plans and leads patrol meetings.

•Helps Scouts learn skills and advance.

•Acts as the chief recruiter of new Scouts.

•Keeps patrol members informed and gathers information for Leaders as needed (expect to make phone calls at least once a week).

•Plans and runs troop meeting activities that are assigned.

•Knows what his patrol members and other leaders can do.

•Sets the example.

•Wears the uniform correctly.

•Lives the Scout Oath and Law.

•Shows Scout spirit.

PATROL LEADER

CAMPOUT DUTIES:

•Follows direction of SPL and assists/guides patrol in set-up/breakdown of camp (tents and patrol site)

•Helps ASPL/Quartermaster organize common troop areas/equipment

•Makes sure meal planning and duty roster are planned/executed prior to campout

•Makes sure menu and duty roster are posted and followed

•Helps teach skills

ASSISTANT PATROL LEADER

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The assistant patrol leader is appointed by the patrol leader and leads the patrol in his absence.

REPORTS TO: The patrol leader

RESPONSIBLE TO: SPL, ASPL, Scoutmasters, Patrol and Troop

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

•No previous leader experience required

•50% or higher attendance at all meetings/outings over past 6 months

•JLT Training

•Actively working on personal rank advancement

ASSISTANT PATROL LEADER

GENERAL DUTIES:

•Helps the patrol leader plan and steer patrol meetings and activities.

•Helps him keep patrol members informed.

•Helps the patrol get ready for all troop activities.

•Represents his patrol at patrol leaders’ council meetings when the patrol leader cannot attend.

CAMPOUT DUTIES:

•Helps PL in assisting/guiding patrol in set-up/breakdown of tents and patrol site

•Helps teach skills

TROOP GUIDE

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The troop guide works with new Scouts. He helps them feel comfortable and earn their First Class rank in their first year. Appointed by Scoutmaster.

REPORTS TO: The Assistant Scoutmaster for the new-Scout patrol in the troop

RESPONSIBLE TO: SPL, ASPL, Scoutmasters, Patrol and Troop

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

•Star Scout or higher (preferred)

•Experience as SLP, ASPL or PL

•75% or higher attendance at all meetings/events in past 6 months

•JLT Training

•Actively working on personal rank advancement

•Be proficient in basic scout skills (knots, knife & axe, fire building, etc.)

•Good hands-on teacher

TROOP GUIDE

GENERAL DUTIES:

•Introduces new Scouts to troop operations.

•Guides/protects new Scouts from harassment by older Scouts.

•Helps new Scouts learn rank advancement and teach basic skills

•Coaches the patrol leader of the new-Scout patrol on his duties.

•Works with the patrol leader at patrol leaders’ council meetings.

•Attends patrol leaders’ council meetings with the patrol leader of the new-Scout patrol.

•Assists the assistant Scoutmaster with training.

•Counsels individuals Scouts on Scouting challenges.

•Sets a good example.

•Enthusiastically and correctly wears the Scout uniform.

•Lives by the Scout Oath and Law.

•Shows Scout spirit.

TROOP QUARTERMASTER

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The quartermaster keeps track of troop equipment and sees that it is in good working order. Appointed by the SPL & ASPL with Scoutmaster approval.

REPORTS TO: The Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and Adult Quartermaster

RESPONSIBLE TO: Scoutmasters, Committee Member in charge of Equipment, Troop as a whole

DUTIES:

•Keeps records on patrol and troop equipment.

•Makes sure equipment is in good working condition.

•Issues equipment and makes sure it is returned in good condition.

•Makes suggestions for new or replacement items.

•Works with the troop committee member responsible for equipment.

•Sets a good example.

•Enthusiastically and correctly wears the Scout uniform.

•Lives by the Scout Oath and Law.

•Shows Scout spirit.

TROOP SCRIBE

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The scribe keeps the troop records. He records the activities of the patrol leaders’ council and keeps a record of dues, advancement, and Scout attendance at troop meetings. 80% attendance required at all Troop activities/mtgs. Must attend JLC meetings. Appointed by Scoutmaster.

REPORTS TO: The Assistant Senior Patrol Leader

RESPONSIBLE TO: JLC, Scoutmasters, Committee Member Scribe, & Troop

DUTIES:

•Attends and keeps a log of patrol leaders’ council meetings.

•Records individual Scout attendance and dues payments – works with adult Finance Chair

•Records individual Scout advancement progress – works with adult Advancement Chair

•Sets a good example.

•Enthusiastically and correctly wears the Scout uniform.

•Lives by the Scout Oath and Law.

•Shows Scout spirit.

CHAPLAIN’S AIDE

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The chaplain’s aide works with the troop chaplain to meet the religious needs of Scouts in the troop. He also works to promote the religious emblems program. Appointed by SPL & ASPL with Scoutmaster approval.

REPORTS TO: The Assistant Senior Patrol Leader

REPONSIBLE TO: ASPL, Scoutmasters and Troop

DUTIES:

•Assists the troop chaplain with religious services at troop activities.

•Tells Scouts about the religious emblem program for their faith.

•Makes sure religious holidays are considered during the troop program planning process.

•Helps plan for religious observance in troop activities.

•Sets a good example.

•Enthusiastically and correctly wears the Scout uniform.

•Lives by the Scout Oath and Law.

•Shows Scout spirit.

DEN CHIEF

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The den chief works with the Cub Scouts, Webelos Scouts, and den leaders in the Cub Scout pack. Term is 1 year and First Class Scout Rank. Expected to attend 75% of all troop mtgs/activites and 90% of Den Mtgs and Pack Mtgs. Appointed by Scoutmaster.

REPORTS TO: The Den Leader in the pack and the Scoutmaster of Troop

RESPONSIBLE TO: Pack, Den Leader and Troop

DUTIES:

•Knows the purposes of Cub Scouting.

•Helps Cub Scouts advance through Cub Scout ranks.

•Encourages Cub Scouts to join a Boy Scout troop upon graduation.

•Assists with activities in the den meetings.

•Is a friend to the boys in the den.

•Helps out at weekly den meetings and monthly pack meetings.

•Meets with adult members of the den, pack, and troop as necessary.

•Sets the example.

•Wears the uniform correctly.

•Lives by the Scout Oath and Law.

•Shows Scout spirit.

INSTRUCTOR

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Teaches basic scouting skills and must be proficient in those skills. Term is 1 year. Rank requirement is First Class or higher and JLT training. Expected to attend a minimum of 75% of all troop activities and meetings. Appointed by Scoutmaster.

REPORTS TO: The Scoutmaster and Asst. Scoutmaster(s) and is appointed by SM

RESPONSIBLE TO: Troop

DUTIES:

•Teaches basic scouting skills to the troop and patrols.

•Must be extremely proficient at the skills to be qualified as an instructor.

•Sets the example.

•Wears the uniform correctly.

•Lives by the Scout Oath and Law.

•Shows Scout spirit.

HISTORIAN

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Keeps a historical record or scrapbook of troop activities. Term is 6 months and position is appointed by SPL & ASPL with Scoutmaster approval. Must attend 75% of Troop meetings and activities.

REPORTS TO: ASPL

RESPONSIBLE TO: Troop

DUTIES:

•Gathers pictures and facts about troop activities and keeps them in a historical file or scrapbook. Can be electronic.

•Takes care of troop trophies, ribbons and souvenirs of activities/events.

•Keeps information about former members of the troop.

•Sets the example.

•Wears the uniform correctly.

•Lives by the Scout Oath and Law.

•Shows Scout spirit.

LIBRARIAN

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Takes care of troop literature. The Library contains books of historical value and current resource materials. 6 month term and appointed by SPL & ASPL with Scoutmaster approval.

REPORTS TO: ASPL

RESPONSIBLE TO: Pack, Den Leader and Troop

DUTIES:

•Sets up and takes care of troop library.

•Keeps records of books & pamphlets owned by troop.

•Adds new or replacement items as needed.

•Keeps books/pamphlets available for borrowing with a system for checking in and out materials.

•Follows up on late returns.

•Sets the example.

•Wears the uniform correctly.

•Lives by the Scout Oath and Law.

•Shows Scout spirit.
