-a realistic possibility

Tromsø wishes to host the Olympic Winter Games. This idea was launched in May 2003, when the Municipality of Tromsø announced this ambition. The national process and work involved have since taken place within the sporting and national political bodies. So far, the work has on the whole been successful. However, the goal had to be

changed from 2014 to 2018 along the way. The project is now stronger than it has been for a long time, and it looks like “The decision” at the IOC Congress in 2011 may well be Tromsø! However, the national voting process has to be undergone first, and we’re aware that this is extremely difficult.

Olympic Winter Games to Tromsø

“Together we shall create a trailblazing celebration of

sports and give the world a moment of Arctic Magic..”

The warm Arctic City

The city of Tromsø and its surrounding environment will provide a wonderful framework for the most spectacular, compact Winter Games ever. Its modern infrastructure and well-functioning, knowledgeable city society are available for international attention and sports at the highest level. Tromsø’s coastline and proximity to major marine resources, with huge mountains as its nearest

neighbours, provide irresistible contrasts. Tromsø is extremely accessible by sea or air. The large, ice-free harbour is one of its advantages, as are two airports within the core area. Snow, ice and coldness are a few of Tromsø’s distinctive character-istics. Tromsø is a winter city and proud of it. It is perfect for hosting the world’s biggest winter sports event in the winter sports nation of Norway.

Contrasts of Tromsø

The magnificent nature that surrounds the city, with mountains meeting the ocean, is in exciting contrast to the pul-sating life in Tromsø city centre. Tromsø is known as an open, hospitable city. With inhabitants from more than

100 nations, the city is also an urban, international one, with various cultural forms of expression. This distinctive nature is also underlined by the fact that Tromsø is the most important Sami town in the Scandinavian Arctic areas.

Description of the area:Most of the coming facilities and outdoor arenas will be within a radius of about 10 km from the city centre.

“In 1843, the world’s first skiing competition for prizes was arranged

in the streets of Tromsø and hills around the city centre. In 2018,

175 years later, Tromsø wants to continue this tradition by playing

host to the Olympic Games.”

Weather and light

Despite its location far north of the Arctic circle, in a sub-Arctic zone, Tromsø has a unique climate compared to corresponding areas in Siberia and Alaska. No other city on the same latitude has the opportunity to arrange the Olympic Winter Games. There is a “lot of weather in the north”, and many weather phenomena are of great interest to the rest of the world. The northern lights (aurora borealis) and midnight sun are the most important

of these. The time between the sun not being visible (from 21 November to 21 January) and Tromsø having lighting that any stage lighter would envy is short. Light measurements have documented that the Winter Games in Tromsø in 2018 can start on Friday 23 February and have 8 1⁄2 hours of daylight. The length of daylight will thereafter increase to almost 11 hours by the end of the Games on 11 March.

“The decision is: Tromsø!”

Tromsø 2018 AS – e-mail: [email protected] – www.tromso2018.no

We hope and believe that the IOC Con-gress will reach this decision in 2011. It will then be more than 7 years until the 2018 Olympic Winter Games open in Tromsø, 24 years after the Lillehammer Olympic Games and 66 years after the Oslo Olympic Games. However, another

anniversary will also be celebrated. It will be 175 years since the world’s first skiing competition for prizes took place in Tromsø (1843). So it is important, and only right, that Norway plays host to the world’s best winter sports athletes in 2018. Welcome to Tromsø!
