Dear Readers, Year 2013 has been full of challenges for Trombay with the unit 6 going into economic shutdown, and the major overhaul of Unit 7. The prospect of unit 6 getting the nod for coal conversion becoming brighter, the challenge is for getting proper PPAs in place, for the off-take, before we take a decision to go ahead with the coal conversion project at an estimated investment of over 1100 crores. Another challenge faced by Trombay is the pricing and availability of natural gas for Unit 7. There was a proposal by the Center to increase the gas price from present $4.2 to $8.4 per MBTU from 1 st April 2014. This pricing if implemented, will make Unit 7 generation unviable in the MOD, when cheaper power is expected to be available in the national grid. There has been a hue and cry about this proposed hike in gas price, and the same is now put on hold, as per information available. Unfortunately for Trombay, another disaster like situation emerged after a major fire in Unit 8, which is now under crash restoration process. This unfortunate and sudden incident has been major setback for Trombay since this coal based unit has been performing well for the last one year. With the above three scenarios staring at us in the face, the challenge is to put a viable business plan in place. Notwithstanding the pressure of the above challenges playing heavily in the minds of the people, the plant activities are going on as usual. We are certainly hopeful that our core strength will help us overcome these challenges and come out winners in the forthcoming year. ETHICAL VALUES TRUST is one of the core values of Tata group, and it may be worthwhile to write something about the qualities that generate trust. First, let’s talk about being trustworthy, not about trusting others. There is a relationship between the two concepts, but a decision to trust another is a choice, not a moral obligation. Being trustworthy, however, is an indispensable aspect of good character. Thus, we should always act so as to be worthy of trust—not simply because it's wise to do so, but because it's the right way to live. Being worthy of full-bodied trust entails two distinct qualities: character and competence. Of course, the attribute we first associate with trustworthy behaviour is integrity. This crucial aspect of good character is demonstrated through scrupulous honesty and moral courage. Dear Readers,

Year 2013 has been full of challenges for Trombay with the unit 6 going into economic shutdown, and the major overhaul of Unit 7.

There was a proposal by the Center to increase the gas price from present $4.2 to $8.4 per MBTU from 1st April 2014.

ETHICAL VALUES

TRUST is one of the core values of Tata group, and it may be worthwhile to write something about the qualities that generate trust.

If we want people to trust us or our organization, they must believe that we will consistently do the right thing, regardless of the circumstances or pressures.

Other aspects of character include accountability and fairness. People trust those who accept responsibility for their choices and don't palm off blame to others. It's also important to be regarded as fundamentally fair.

But in business, confidence in character is not enough to justify trust. Trust also involves the conviction that the person or organization will successfully do what is expected. This competency dimension of trust embraces faith in ability, knowledge and judgment as well as a belief that the person or organization will be reliable and responsive. Reliability is established through diligence and follow-through while responsiveness involves respectful communication and demonstrated concern.

These are among some of the personal values I have brought out in one of the earlier editions of this newsletter.
