What's coming next

We have three things to talk about this afternoon.

First we will do a brief review of 2009:

Notes and Domino 8.51, Alloy, Traveler, Foundations, xPages, Protector, and the work of our partners.

Second, we will discuss what is in store for 2010.

You heard a bit about that this morning.

Much of 2010 will build on the success of 2009.

But Lotus Knows there will be some breakthroughs too.

Third, we are going to talk about the future.

New widget wizard for composite applications

New wizard specific to a composite application.

Provides a list of actions appropriate to this composite application context

The Widgets toolbar now works in a composite application

A new widget configuration wizard is available for creating a widget using the active composite application as the current context. Prioir to Notes 8.5.2 the Widget toolbar DID NOT work with a composite application. Now it does and (thanks to Bob Balfe, the dev who came up with this idea) we think that this new wizard makes it really easy to create widgets from comp. Apps because it detects the appropirate actions for the comp app that you launched the wizard from!

Using this new wizard, users can either create a widget that simply opens the composite application in a new tab, or one that is wired to act on Live Text or selected text in a particular manner.

The following sequence configures the widget such that a zip code from Live Text in a Notes document is sent to the "Filter View by Category" action in the composite application.

1. In Notes, open a composite application and click the "Configure a widget from the current context" toolbar option to open the "Create a new widget for this application" wizard. For example, open a composite application that contains the Notes Mail and Contacts views.

2. Use the wizard to specify a new widget name, for example ZipCodeContactFilter.

3. To wire the widget to act on Live Text or selected text in a particular way, click Wire as an action.

Note: To create a widget that simply opens the composite application in a new tab, click Just configure a widget for now and Finish.4. Enter a descriptive action name to appear in the Live Text hover menu, for example ZipCodeCollect.5. Select the content type property for the action. For example, select Address and then select the address.zip child property.

Note: You should be familiar with the composite application itself before attempting to wire a content property to an action.

6. Select one or more component actions to execute with Live Text or selected text. For example, select the All Contact > Filter View by Category action.

Note: Only component actions that accept a string value as input are listed; other value types are not available.

7. Click Finish and the new widget appears in the My Widgets sidebar panel.

From here you can double click on the widget in the My Widgets sidebar panel to open the application or you can execute the Live Text widget action that you have just created. You can also right-click the widget and choose Configure a new action to create more actions for the widget. Additionally, you can add the widget to the widgets catalog to share it with others, and so on.

Show or hide widget thumbnails

Hide any widget you do not want to see

Use the Show All menu to make all hidden ones visible again

Option to re-use the same sidebar panel

Before, clicking to map each of these addresses with Live Text would have opened 3 different sidebar panels

Now, admins can put the following in the widget.xml. True = reuse same sidebar

Applications->Lotus Application Support

Notes pre-loader

The preloader option can be enabled during the Notes client install or upgrade process using the Launch parts of Notes when the operating system starts to enable faster Notes startup option. The option appears on the same install screen on which Notes can be enabled as the default mail

Specify the source of business card information

By default, the business card is populated with data from the products in the following order:

Lotus Connections

Lotus Sametime

Lotus Notes

You can either change the order or prevent a source from being used.

To change the order, specify the following in

/framework/rcp/ plugin_customization.ini

com.ibm.rcp.bizcard/change.priority.for.NotesContacts=G

com.ibm.rcp.bizcard/change.priority.for.profiles=E

com.ibm.rcp.bizcard/change.priority.for.com.ibm.lconn.client.bizcard.livename=C

Use letters that come later in the alphabet to specify higher priority products and letters that come earlier in the alphabet to specify products with a lower priority. For example, a priority of A is lower than a priority of B.

To prevent one of the products from being the source of the business card data, add the following property:

com.ibm.rcp.bizcard/disable.content.for.=true

where is one of the following values:

Lotus Connections: profiles

Lotus Notes: NotesContacts

Lotus Sametime: com.ibm.lconn.client.bizcard.livename

See the pretty sailboat icon for the application icon

Last by not least: Pretty icons!!

Admin or app dev adds the pretty icon using Domino Designer

Choose an image resource. Can be .gif, .png

You can replace or remove your new icon

New project on Openntf.org where you MIGHT BE ABLE TO get pretty icons!

What might be coming next Lotus iNotes 8.5.3

Building off of today's capabilities

Unifying the experience across access and delivery models

Applying technology to empower people to work in new ways

Making possible the next generation of solutions

Provides a blueprint for the evolution of the IBM collaboration portfolioHeard about IBM Project Vulcan during the keynote it is a vision that provides a blueprint for how our products will evolve, including Notes/Domino.

We are pursuing IBM Project Vulcan keeping four principles in mind: Continuity, Convergence, Innovation, and Opportunity. What does this mean for the evolution of Notes/Domino?

Continuity builds off of today's capabilities. By following the N/D upgrade path you will be on your way to achieving the vision. [Insert details around current capabilities like xPages apps that are taking us in the direction of Vulcan]

Convergence unifying the experience while making the enabling technology (UI, delivery model) matter less. Client experience that is unhooked from the servers and services that support it.

Innovation enabling people to work in new ways, applying elements like social analytics, helping people move out of the inbox and towards streams of information most relevant to their work.

Opportunity making possible the next generation of solutions by bringing a new focus to Web technologies such as public REST APIs, XPages for Domino applications, widgets and mashups, and HTML5 for richer user experience.
