ABOUT OUR BIRDING SUCCESS!

We started our birding activity in Lima as usually. If you are in Lima already you should do some birding around.

We drove from Miraflores to Pantanos de villa (villa marshes) for 25 minutes and we did some hours there looking for our targets species. Then we drove again much southern for other 30 minutes to Pucusana local fishing port. We enjoyed our lunch there and we went for our boat trip. After Pucusana we went a bit further south to Puerto Viejo for some extra bird’s species. After a full day birding along the coast we head back to Miraflores Hotel.

Before our fly to Cusco we organize an extra birding activity to Loma de Lachay at north of Lima. We drove for 2 hours to reach our birding location and we have spent some hours birding at Lachay Reserve: Least Seedsnipe, Peruvian Meadowlark, Yellowish Pipit, Grayish Miner, Amazilia Hummingbird, cinereous Conebill among others on the way and after we drove straight to Lima airport. We flew to Cusco after lunch. We arrived to our hotel near the main square late in the afternoon and free time.

The next day we did our train trip to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town). We have seen from the train many Torrent ducks! After our accommodation in our hotel we went for yummy lunch then some free time and afternoon birding along the Urubamba River. We were very lucky because we have found a cock of the rock female nesting! We visited finally Machu Picchu! Early morning, the Inca ruin is just unbelievable… then we did some birding along the road near the Machu Picchu entrance for Inca Wren (ENDEMIC), Green and White Hummingbird (ENDEMIC), Ocellated Piculet, Golden-billed Saltator, Spectacled Redstart, Blue & Yellow Tanager, Chestnut-Capped Brush-

Finch, Saffron-Crowned Tanager, Mottle-cheeked Tyrannulet, the some birding along the river for: white-capped dipper, Torrent duck, Blue-necked tanager, Golden-crowned flycatcher, Silver-backed Tanager, Oleaginous Hemispingus, Dusky-Green Oropendola, Andean Motmot, Rust & Yellow Tanager among others. Then we enjoyed our lunch before our train to Ollantaytambo. We arrive to our hotel and free time. We started early morning our next birding adventure to Carrizales, Abra Malaga, Peñas birding spot. We drove for half hour up the mountains to reach our first stop Peñas: we have found here, Creamy-crested Spinetail (ENDEMIC), Rusty-fronted Canastero (ENDEMIC), White-tufted Sunbeam (ENDEMIC), Red-crested Cotinga, Black-throated Flowerpiercer then we kept driving to Carrizales but We got some rain there so we have not seen much there, only Unstreaked Tit-tyrant(ENDEMIC), Parodi’s Hemispingus (ENDEMIC)Rufous-breasted Chat-Tyrant and Shining Sunbeam, So turned back to Abra Malaga area and the small ponds place, we have seen here: Black-faced Ibis, Andean Lapwing, Royal Cinclodes, White-winged and dark-winged Cinclodes, Plumbeous Sierra-finch, Ash-breasted Sierra-finch, Tufted Tit-tyrant. After some hours searching those birding locations we drove to Ollantaytambo for lunch and then we started our drive to Cusco. We stopped at Huaypo Lagoon on the way to Cusco for: White-tufted Grebe, Puna Teal, Yellow-billed Pintail, Yellow-billed Teal, Ruddy Duck, Yellow-winged Blackbird. We arrive to Cusco hotel and free time.

So today we started our birding time along the most Popular Road at southern Peru, the Manu Road. We started with Huacarpay Lake for: Bearded Mountaineer (ENDEMIC), Giant Hummingbird, Black-tailed Trainbearer, Plumbeous Rail, Andean Flicker, Band-tailed Sierra-Finch, Bare-faced Ground-Dove, Mourning Sierra-finch among others and then we drove to Paucartambo village for Lunch. Then we kept driving deeper into Manu road. We didn’t have much action after Acjanaco pass because it was raining almost all the way to our first destination Cock of the rock Lodge. But we found Andean Potoo and Blue-banded Toucanet. We arrive late in the afternoon and Dinner at the lodge.

We started with a good breakfast and then we drove up road for mixed flocks and targets species. We back for lunch and have some break watching hummingbirds feeders and tanagers!. We did some birding in the afternoon also along the road. We had dinner and overnight in Cock of the Rock Lodge. Some birds seen:

We enjoyed our early breakfast and then we did some birding along the road. We eat an early lunch at the lodge and then we have driven down Manu road to reach Atalaya Village for our short boat trip to Amazonia Lodge. We arrive to the lodge at free time to enjoin the feeders around!. We explored here some trails looking for Amazonian bird’s specialist for the first morning and afternoon. The next day we had a boat trip to a small Parrot clay and Cocha (oxbow lake) for full morning. We did some afternoon walk inside the forest. We finish our birding day watching Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl just behind the lodge!

Some birds seen for our full days from the cloud forest to the Amazon: After Amazonia lodge we turned back to Manu Road again to spend one night at Wayqecha station. We arrived for the afternoon; well it was a big change after the tropical wheatear to the Andes again. After all our accommodation at the station, we did some birding late in the afternoon. We have seen our before gets dark: Scarlet-Bellied Mountain-Tanager, Hooded Mountain-Tanager, Golden-Crowned Tanager, Andean Guan, Masked Flowerpiercer, Moustached Flowerpiercer, Tyrant Metaltail, Rufous-capped Thornbill, Sierran Elaenia, Great Thrush, Glossy-Backed Thrush, Mountain Wren, among others.

Next day we had our early breakfast and we drove down the road for birding before our trip back to Cusco. We went directly to the tunnel for the first mix flocks activity. It was an excellent morning!

After few ours exploring the area we turned back to the station for our lunch. After lunch we started our trip

into the mountains through the way to Cusco. We mainly drove to Cusco but, we stopped by Huacarpay Lake for the last birding activity. We have found for this time: Golden-spotted Ground-Dove, Cinereous ground-Tyrant, Tawzanowski’s ground-Tyrant, Rufous-naped Ground-Tyrant. Then we arrived to Cusco for Dinner.

The next day had some free time to see Cusco city a bit more. We had our last lunch together for our excellent birding tour! After lunch we went to the airport for our flight to Lima.
