Summer Fun at Old McMickys Farmin Odessa

Homebuilder Ralph Zuckermanpurchased some land in Odessa at the siteof Old McMickys farm, which went upfor sale in 2006. It was very rundown andfor years he didnt know what to do withthe property. But whatever his eventualplans, the land had to be cleaned up.When that was done, the homebuilderdecided not to fill the lakefront propertywith houses.

Instead he turned the land into apetting zoo and a farm, with goats, rab-bits, chickens and ponies for riding.Theres a milking station where kids notonly learn about milking a cow, but alsowill have a chance to do it. Located nextdoor is the baby barn, filled with thefarms youngest residents. Above it, a loftmaze provides an outlet for the seeminglyendless energy of visiting children. Everychild gets a pony ride and can travel abarnyard maze that ends with a slide ridefrom the second story. Theres also ahayride powered by a 1949 Ford tractor.A visit to the baby pygmy goats elicitsshrieks of delight and squeals. Comment-ing on the farm, Zuckerman says, Itsold-fashioned, traditional fun in a beauti-ful natural setting.

In late May, kindergarten and first-grade students gave the farm a test runbefore it officially opened to the public. Its great to see the amazement on theirfaces, Zuckerman says. Most of thesekids have never held a chicken, and youcan see their faces light up. They are learn-ing to have an appreciation for animals.Along the way, guides provide details onthe animals and how they are cared for.

Many of the same people who worked atthe farm before it closed in 2006 have re-joined the team, Zuckerman says.

In an effort to give back to the com-munity, Zuckerman introduced a pro-gram called 1,000 kids. We want tobring 1,000 kids who are facing any typeof challenge, whether it is a physical, health or mental challenge, Zuckermansays. (We) bring them out for an amaz-ing day on the farm at no charge. Zuck-erman has reached out to several areanonprofit groups and is open to workingwith others, including Wounded Veterans.

The farm is very peaceful, Zucker-man says. Its very healing. I decided Iwanted to re-create the tradition for theTampa Bay area. The farm is on the for-mer Camp Keystone acreage. It wasfounded in 1946 and had served as a pop-ular summer camp for six decades.

Old McMickys Farm is at 9612Crescent Drive in Odessa. It is openevery day with the first tour beginning at9 a.m. and the last tour at 1 p.m. The costis: children, $9; adults, $11; seniors, themilitary, law enforcement, firefighters orteachers, $9. Groups of 20 or more withreservations, pay $8 per person.

The commu-nity service event is part of a larger day ofservice called CareFest, a Christ-centeredcommunity service.

The property had the lawn, bushesand trees cut and trimmed; vines were re-moved. The volunteers were on the prop-erty on Saturday, May 18, 2013 from8:30 a.m. to noon. Along with thecleanup at the River church, some individ-uals from these groups helped two wheel-chair-bound residents.

Another Hurricane Season GivesSome Trinity Residents the Jitters

Its the start of another hurricaneseason, but for the residents of ThousandOaks, as well as other sections of Trinity, memories of Tropical Storm Debby(Sept. 2012) linger. How could one for-get a storm that dumped 16 inches of rainon them, leaving streets underwater forthree days? Adding insult to injury, a se-ries of storms over the next few weeksadded another 10 inches of rain to an al-ready intensely saturated ground, which, after three months, still hadnt dried out.Flooding also closed sections of S.R. 54and residents became stranded in theirhomes.

The Thousand Oaks and TrinityOaks communities sit at the bottom of abowl in the Duck Slough watershed. Those neighborhoods were some of thehardest hit in Pasco, both by Debbie andsubsequent rainfalls. In these hardest hitareas, water was found to be flowing like ariver between homes.

A $1 million state grant will go to-ward fixing drainage issues in the Duck

Slough basin and in the ThousandOaks/Trinity Oaks areas in Trinity. In ad-dition, a team of inspectors visited ourarea last month to scrutinize 23 parcelsthe county wants to buy or elevate in thewake of Debby, according to AnnetteDoying, Pascos Emergency Manage-ment Director. An additional $1.2 mil-lion has been pledged toward purchase ofthese parcels. Doying emphasized thatPasco suffered the largest losses in thestate from Debby. She added that premi-ums could likely take a big jump soon forsecondary homes in flood plains.

County officials have been workingon flooding problems in the area since2003. Angry residents wondered why afix was taking so long. At this time, thecounty is working with homeowners asso-ciations, which bear some of the responsi-bility for maintenance and cleaning ofdrainage ditches. Pasco emergency offi-cials have been communicating in weeklyconference phone calls with NationalWeather Service (NWS) experts based inRuskin, says Doying. Meanwhile, thecounty will maintain the same shelters aslast year, including two locations that ac-cept pets.

When you were growing up, didyou have a favorite family member orfriends house that you loved going tobecause from the moment you en-tered you were provided with deli-cious food? Food that filled your bellyand warmed your heart. Central ParkFamily Restaurant on State Road 54,near Dunkin Donuts and Wendys, makes customers feel like guests, withdelicious food in a friendly atmos-phere. Owner Chris Michael has along family history of providing excel-lent food. Chriss family opened their

first restaurant in New York City in1982, and when they moved toFlorida they ran Four Coins FamilyRestaurant in St. Petersburg for nearly16 years. In 2007 and 2008, NewPort Richey and Temple Terrace loca-tions of Central Park Family Restau-rant opened, and in 2010 they openedSquare Plate Restaurant in PinellasPark.

When I first visited Central ParkFamily Restaurant in New PortRichey, I was looking for a new family-owned breakfast diner. I love that youcan get breakfast at any time of daythere, and I thought thats what wed

eat. We had no idea how much morethere was to Central Park until ourfirst visit. Chris and his family taketraditional favorite comfort foods andupdate them with a fresh twist. Hecalls it American fusion; I call it deli-cious.

You can start your meal with anappetizer of saganaki (a Greek flamingcheese), calamari or one of the manyother appetizers. Their southern friedchicken is crispy golden brown, andserved with waffles and collard greenswith a kick. This is a Monday staple, but if you come in on a Tuesday, Cen-tral Park offers a Cuban chicken plat-ter that includes black beans,Caribbean rice, and fried plantains

with a beautifulmango orange re-duction sauce.Every Friday, thespecial is Fish &Chips. On theweekend you cantry their perfectedlamb dinner.Grouper is servedtoo, but only whenits in season andfresh, because Cen-tral Park strives toserve only quality

ingredients. Between the generousportions and delectable food combina-tions, you would really think you werebeing served in an upscale New Yorkrestaurant, without the upscale prices.

If youre visiting Central Park forlunch they have an enormous varietyof salads to choose from as well asaward-winning burgers. Their burgersare all natural ground beef with nofillers. The half-pound Black Angusbeef burgers include specialty burgerssuch as the Jalapeno Ranch withmelted American cheese, grilledjalapenos, sizzling bacon, ranch dress-ing, and BBQ sauce. Central Park Family Restaurantsproduce is handpicked by the family atproduce farms before it enters therestaurant. The time the staff putsinto inspecting the produce in advanceis evident when you order one of themany salads from their menu. TheirCaesar salad can be topped withchicken or shrimp, and their Italiansalad is loaded with salami, pepperoni,

ham, and mozzarella cheese. A fa-vorite is their salad for each season. The summer salad is refreshing withgrilled chicken breast, dried cranber-ries, shredded cheese and raspberryvinaigrette. Their winter salad in com-parison, has sliced ham, mozzarellacheese, pineapple and your choice ofhomemade dressing. No matter whattime of day you visit Central ParkFamily Restaurant, I recommend atleast one person in your party to orderfrom their breakfast menu so you cansample some of it yourself! Their pan-cakes are the best Ive ever eaten

anywhere. They are so fluffy, minemeasured 1/2 inch high. Waffles arealso delicious, and if youd like some-thing lighter you can try one of thecrepes. There are 67 different types ofomelets on the menu, all of which aremade with extra large eggs. Some localsenjoy that they can find both scrapple (atraditional mush of pork combined withcornmeal and wheat flour with spices)and New Jersey Taylor pork roll at Cen-tral Park, just like they would up north.

Don Bailey and Charlotte Jacksonof Trinity normally eat two meals a dayat Central Park Family Restaurant.Don says, The portions are large. Many times we can get another mealfrom the leftovers. The price you pay iswell worth it.

Charlotte adds, Well pass abunch of other places to eat here. Itsnot hit or miss, but consistently good.We like that Don can order a breakfastand I can order a lunch at the sametime. Chris is always bringing in newthings too, that arent even on themenu. Today I just had frog legs, andthey were delicious!

She was hooked! Then, something transformationalbegan to happen. She noticed yogafollowing her off the mat. Whether it

was using the breath she learned inclass to stay calm through heavy traf-fic, or taking a pause to center beforedealing with her prepubescent daugh-ter, she found the after effects of yogawere transformational on many levels.Janel decided to explore yoga furtherthrough teacher training, and receivedher Yoga Alliance 200-YTT certifica-tion through the Lotus Pond this pastMarch. Ragazzi's NY style Pizzeria andItalian Restaurant is now better thanever! Owners Cristina and Joseph havespent the past two years working dili-gently to give their customers some-thing special. At Ragazzis, customersenjoy a break from fast food and canrelax, knowing that a meal comprisedof the finest choice ingredients andhouse-made sauces is being preparedjust the way they like it. Everything onthe menu at Ragazzis is made withlove, from the calzones and pasta to thepizza pies and the many Italian specialtyentres.

Ragazzis is located in New PortRichey on State Road 54 at the PascoSquare Shopping Center and is openfor lunch and dinner Wednesdaythrough Sunday. Ragazzis received aFive-Star Award for Customer Satisfac-tion in 2013 from the Talk of the Townnews, says Cristina, who is rightfullyproud of the improvements that sheand Joseph have made, such as the up-grades to the dining room. We im-proved everything at our restaurant, including adding imported ingredientssuch as cooking wines and cheeses,

says Cristina. It makes a tremendousdifference in the flavor."

She adds, Ragazzis received avisit from two food critics who person-ally called to congratulate the chef aftertheir visit, says Cristina. Our chefswork very hard to maintain the highquality and consistency of our food.We treat every dish as a work of art. Wemake every dish from scratch becausewe believe freshness and quality are thefoundation of extraordinary flavor.Once people taste the difference of theauthentic New York-style artisan pizzaand our gourmet dishes and soups, they become regulars.

One of the newest regularscomes in every Thursday. Cristina says,He usually looks at the menu and saysI dont know what to choose! Every-thing is so good could you pick twofor me? Then he enjoys a glass of winewhile he waits and starts suggesting se-lections he has tried to the people whocome in to order take-out. It is the bestadvertising!

Ragazzis Sauce Its Special! Everything started as a little

seed, explains Cristina onhow they decided to startbottling Ragazzis Authen-tic Homemade ItalianSauce. We kept hearingand hearing how good oursauces were and how farsome of our clients traveledto come to our restaurant. We have customers fromTown n Country inTampa, South Tampa, Car-rollwood, Odessa, PalmHarbor and Tarpon Springs. One of our faithful diners,Pat, comes every week saying, If youguys werent here I think I wouldstarve! All of the feedback led us to theidea to bottle our own homemadesauces. Our sauces are made fromscratch, so it is an intensive four- tofive-hour process for a batch. They arepreservative and sugar free, and madethe old-fashioned way. The resultshows in the flavor amazing!

Delicious, house-made sauce isnothing new for Ragazzis but it took abit of work to reach the goal of sellingit to the public. It was a ten-month

process from idea to finished product, but Cristina says it was all worth it andwhen the inspector came to approveRagazzis, he ordered three jars forhimself! Currently, our sauces arebeing sold in South America and atNutrition Smart Supermarkets in theU.S. Nutrition Smart is a chain of su-permarkets that offers high qualityproducts such as organic, preservative-free and sugar free foods. The grocerymanager Philip Ricupa, originally fromNew York, loved our sauces and thefact that they are locally produced. As aresult, we had to dedicate Mondays

and Tuesdays to making and bottlingour sauces at our kitchen. It is very re-warding to see our sauces in theshelves!

Joseph and Cristina wanted to dosomething to give back to the commu-nity and wanting to specifically helpfamilies. They decided to donate a per-centage of the stores sale of sauces tothe Youth and Family Alternatives pro-gram in New Port Richey. Cristina ex-plains, This organization is dedicatedto strengthening families and offers

many programs such as substanceabuse prevention and intervention serv-ices, foster care and adoption, runawayand youth crisis with a focus on familycounseling. We spent a day visitingtheir facilities and really liked theirmethodology. A lot of major changeshappen during the earlier years andsometimes the pressures of life, familyand school make the youth lose track oftheir goals, which could be devastatingin their later years. This organizationhelps them get back on track and deal

with all the different changes in ahealthy way.

Ragazzis CaresRagazzis is dedicated to providing

a good work environment for their em-ployees, all of whom Cristina andJoseph have personally trained. Wepartner with Career Central and ayouth program that is a service ofPasco-Hernando Workforce Boardwhere they place the youth in their firstjob. We decided to open our doors andgive the young people a chance to de-velop a trade for their future. Our corebeliefs at Ragazzis are: Trust, Attitudeand Teamwork. Cristina says that sherealizes that a first job can be intimidat-ing and that is why she works hard tohelp her servers to develop skills theywill need now and in the future.

We develop their job skills andteach them discipline, responsibility andaccountability, says Cristina. We al-ways tell them, Think of life as a seed. When you work with a good attitude, giving the best of yourselves and stay-ing out of trouble, life will reward youthe same way in the right time.

She adds, We encourage the new

generation to dream and always have avision. My husband had an idea for aproduct and two of our employees aredeveloping everything. We plan topatent the idea and compensate themon future sales. We also had one of ouremployees create the best piece of ad-vertising for us. They need to havedreams and plans for the future to keepthem on the right track.

It is crucial to Joseph and Cristinathat Ragazzis is a drug-free environ-ment. We give our employees thetools they need to occupy their mindwith positive things such as learning atrade, working together and sharingideas. We want them to always have agoal and a dream.

Ragazzis remains committed toproviding customers with deliciousfood cooked with fine ingredients andextra care. Next year, Ragazzis firstfranchise is planned to be open. AndCristina says you can expect even moregreat food in the future, as they plan toadd a variety of delicious differentproducts for customers locally andabroad.

Cristina adds, We really wouldlike to thank our faithful clients who in-spired us to produce our sauces. Theirpositive feedback was a huge motiva-tion. Also, to our employees, a hugeTHANK YOU for working very hardand making it happen!

Suntan Lotion for Your EyesThe Importance of U.V. Protection for Your Eyes

    By Aron M. Arkon, L.D.O.

Summer is just around the cornerand this is a good time to review the im-portance of ultraviolet (UV) protectionfor your eyes in terms of protecting youreyes from the harmful effects of this typeof exposure. Think of UV protectionlike suntan lotion for your eyes.

MedicalMost of us already know that ultra-

violet rays can cause a variety of medicalconditions including skin cancer, cataracts, as well as cancer of the eyelidsand skin around the eyes. UV exposuremay also increase the risk of macular de-generation, a leading cause of blindnessin the elderly. It is important to under-stand that UV exposure is invisible andeffects are diagnosed by regular visits toyour medical professional.

Understanding UVUltraviolet light has three main

components:UVA Rays these are the primary

ones absorbed by your eyes, whilethese are generally not harmful, they

should be avoided.UVB Rays these are the main

concern for your eyes. These are therays that are linked to eye disease. Ac-cording to the American Academy ofOphthalmology long term exposure toUVB rays is linked to eye disease. UVBradiation is considered more dangerousto eyes and skin than UVA radiation.

UVC Rays these are generallynot damage causing, as they areblocked by the atmosphere.

Children and UVMany parents underestimate the

importance of protecting young chil-drens eyes against long term UV dam-age all year long but especially in thesummer. Just like applying sunscreen orsunblock, young children should have aquality pair of sunglasses with 100%UVB block. This will protect their eyeswhen outdoors.

What to Look for in SunglassesOther factors to consider when

purchasing quality sunglasses include:- Blockage of at least 85% of visible light- Maximum glare protection with polar-

ized lenses in a variety of lens materials- Gray or brown lens color as thesework best for most people

Test Current SunglassesIf you are not sure your current fa-

vorite pair of sunglasses offers adequateUV protection we suggest stopping in toyour local optical shop. Most have a UVmeter, which will test for the percent ofUV blocked by your lenses. The test is

quick and generally will not cost you. Finally, take care of your eyes by

always having adequate UV protectionin non-prescription sunglasses as well asall prescription eyewear.

Aron M. Arkon, L.D.O. workswith ophthalmology practices acrossthe country as a senior consultant. Healso is a national lecturer at confer-ences. He is the owner of Maxi Eye-care, located in New Port Richey.
