Hymn of Praise Unison ScriptureBECAUSE HE LIVES
VERSE 1God sent His Son, they called Him Jesus,
He came to love, heal, and forgive; He lived and died to buy my pardon,
An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.
CHORUSBecause He lives I can face tomorrow,
Because He lives all fear is gone;Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living just because He lives.
VERSE 2How sweet to hold a newborn baby,And feel the pride, and joy He gives; But greater still the calm assurance,
This child can face uncertain days because He lives.
VERSE 3And then one day I’ll cross the river,
I’ll fight life’s final war with pain; And then as death gives way to vict’ry,
I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know He lives.
JOHN 15:9-11 (NIV)9“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

Confession of SinsAlmighty and Most Merciful Father, we come before You, acknowledging our sins, our shortcomings, and our breaking of our Covenant with You.
Not only have we done things we ought not to have done, said things we ought not to have said, left undone so many things we ought to have done and been silent when we should have witnessed for You.
Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but we have also closed our eyes and pretended not to see the injustices, the racism and the evil which pervade our everyday lives.
We have shut our ears and pretended not to hear the cries for liberation which come from the lips, lives and hearts of the oppressed – even our own Black brothers and sisters!
Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and faith, and keep us ever mindful of Thy great sacrifice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as we come to You in love and worship giving Your Name the praise forevermore.
******
To All Our Visitors ... To all who mourn and need comforting ... To all who are friendless and want friendship ... To all who are oppressed and need liberation; and to whosoever will come, Trinity opens its doors. Thank you for coming, and may God bless you.

The sermon series entitled “What Makes Life Worth Living?” is devoted to the virtues, ideals, and spiritual disciplines that must be cultivated to build the “good life.” The world falsely communicates to us, happiness is connected to things, possessions, material status, and assets; but what makes life worth living are the virtues we will lift up in this series.

To Do JusticeUPDATE ON SLAVERY IN MAURITANIA
On Sunday, October 12, 2014, the Trinity UCC Africa Ministry, in partnership with Masjid Al-Taqwa and The Abolition Institute, formed “Championing Freedom” as a movement and sponsored the groundbreaking dramatic presentation and panel discussion highlighting the vestiges of modern day slavery. This event responded to a direct request from Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, wherein he tasked the Africa Ministry to develop a meaningful and productive response.
Mauritania is a small Muslim country located on the western border of Africa, which is encircled by Morocco, Algeria, Mali, Senegal, Gambia, and Guinea Bisau. It is ranked the worst perpetrator in the world for enslavement of its own people!
In 2012, John Sutter, a CNN investigative correspondent, wrote an eye-opening exposé entitled, Slavery’s Last Stronghold (tinyurl.com/SlaverysLast). The shock and horror of this reality compelled the co-founders of Abolition Institute, headquartered in Chicago, to formalize a team seeking to eradicate slavery in Mauritania.
In the early 1700’s, as the French colonized Mauritania, they turned a blind eye to the vestiges of chattel slavery there. It wasn’t until 1976 that the first abolitionist organization (“El Hor”) was established and not until 1981 that Mauritania enacted its very first law banning slavery. It took another 26 years (2007) before slavery was criminalized. After the organization of two more abolitionist organizations, SOS Slaves and IRA-Mauritania, the government slowly began to respond.
Championing Freedom, was able to secure two Resolutions signed by the Chicago City Council, as well as a Proclamation signed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, all of which denounce Mauritania’s practice of slavery while recognizing the support of Senator Richard Durbin in his efforts to secure meaningful funding to assist victims who escape the vestiges of slavery. By 2016 the momentum of these efforts really paid off, as for the first time, a conviction of slaveholders, including a demand for restitution to the survivors, was finally recorded! In tandem, further lobbying with federal legislators led to $2.5 million in funding earmarked for survivors of slavery in the Western Sahara (including Mauritania). An additional $1 million from the Foreign Appropriations Committee was added at the close of the January 2017 session.
How can you be of help or get involved? Remember, faith without works is dead. Prayer begins what action can complete. Please visit www.StoppingSlavery.org and get informed. Host information sessions to help build awareness in your community. Teachers, business professionals, homeworkers, pastors, deacons, lay leaders - build action by building awareness. There is always something to do!

Dear Trinity Family,
Greetings to you, and many blessings for good health, peace, and joy. In just 2 weeks, we will host the First Ladies Health Initiative Health Screening Day. I am deeply honored to be a part of this national effort to inform and empower church communities with vital, lifesaving health information.
Since its inception, Trinity United Church of Christ has supported the First Ladies Health Initiative and in fact, our much beloved Anthony Hollins was the impetus to courageously offer HIV testing inside of
our houses of worship. This national platform is literally saving peoples’ lives and creating a culture of health and wellness within African American and Latino communities of faith.
Therefore, I am happy to invite you to take part in the First Ladies Health Initiative on Sunday, September 17, immediately following the 7:30 and 11:00 worship services. Please encourage your friends and family to take advantage of the free health education and screenings to be offered.
During the Health Fair we will be providing health screenings for:
• Blood Pressure• Glucose• Hepatitis C• HIV• Diabetes• Flu Shots
We will also have providers present to discuss topics on mental health, prostate health, stress management, dental health, and much more. We look forward to seeing you there!
God bless,
First Lady Monica Moss

AnnouncementsThe ISUTHU (Coming Into Manhood) Ministry wishes to thank Pastor Moss, the Pastoral Staff, and the members of the congregation for your support of our 2017 Annual Summer Camp to YMCA Camp Ohiyesu in Holly, Michigan!
• You blessed us to be able to take almost twice as many boys as we were able to take to camp last summer! A total of 27 boarded the bus to Michigan!!! You also enabled us to take several boys and mentors who were unable to pay for camp themselves due to financial hardship! Many enjoyed their first camping experience away from home! They were able to fish, canoe, swim, feed farm animals, do high ropes, and take other leaps of faith, while learning about the word of God and growing closer to Christ through Christian education activities and mentoring experiences with the ISUTHU men of God for five whole days!
• As a community of men, we humbly thank you for the outpouring of gifts and resources to assist in the lifting up of the lives of the young boys of ISUTHU who will become future leaders, fathers, uncles, mentors, and builders of the community that we all yearn for and that our ancestors believed was soon to come
• During the sacred Rites of Passage Ceremony at the camp we witnessed two high school seniors, Kamren Williams and Evan Pearson, transition into manhood before leaving for college last month. They proved their strengths of self-mastery, relationship, and action. That’s the kind of impact your contribution made to this important youth ministry!
• ISUTHU is open to all male youth mentees between ages 6-18 years old. Trinity UCC membership is not a requirement. We also welcome all adult men who wish to join us as mentors in the building of strong compassionate GOD fearing African young men
• As parents and guardians bring us their children to be developed through the ministry of ISUTHU, we are ever so thankful and grateful for your continued support of monetary gifts
