WILLIAM O. FRAWLEY '60 (2011)Gift of Marlynn and William P. Scully, 1961, of Vero Beach, FL, in honor of William O. Frawley, 1960. Income from the fund is to be used for one or more students who demonstrate financial need at the College. William Frawley was a psychology major at Trinity. Frawley was a naval pilot assigned to Fighter Squadron 143 on board the aircraft carrier USS Ranger. On March 1, 1966, he launched in his F4B Phantom with his Radar Intercept Officer, Lt. J.G. William Christensen. Along with two other F4 aircraft, they were assigned an armed coastal reconnaissance mission. While just off the coast of North Vietnam and at an extremely low level, all three aircraft coordinated a low-level turn through inclement weather. Midway through the turn, the lead aircraft lost contact with Frawley's plane. It was learned later, the crew of the second aircraft did hear a surface-to-air (SAM) missile alert, but no missiles were seen or reported. Circumstances suggest collision with the water, although enemy action was never ruled out. Both men were declared missing in action, and their remains were never recovered.
