To God’s people in the
body of Christ at Trinity,
peace and joy be yours as
you continue to celebrate
the wonder and victory of
the resurrection this Easter
season!
What’s in a name? We
carry the name of
Christian – follower of /
believer in Christ Jesus as
Lord and Saviour. But
what does that mean for
who we are or how we
live? In what ways can it
mold us or give direction
to our actions?
Let me introduce you to
Francisco Lindor. He is
23 years old and plays
shortstop for the
Cleveland Indians major
league baseball team. He
is in his third year in the
major leagues – his second
full year. His current
salary is $579,300 dollars
a year. Over the next few
years he stands to make
millions, with a potential
to be paid over
$15,000,000 a year by the
year 2022. He was born
in Puerto Rico and was
relatively poor – a
situation that has since
changed.
Francisco is a star player.
He won a Gold Glove (for
best fielder at his
position) and was
appointed to the American
League All-Star team this
past year. He is a very
positive person, well liked
by his teammates and fans
alike, and seems very
mature for his age,
especially given how
quickly he has risen
through the minor leagues
and how well he has done
at the major league level
in such a short time.
Recently, several baseball
commentators were
discussing Lindor’s play,
his star status and his
financial future. All noted
that he is at this time the
well liked and polite
person noted above – but
some of them fear for his
future, as so many athletes
and other “famous
people” have undergone
major personality changes
as their fame or stardom
has increased.
But one commentator said
he had no worries about
Francisco becoming an
unlikeable or obnoxious
person. And that is what
ties Francisco Lindor
into our discussion on
“what’s in a name”. The
commentator noted that
during an interview
given by Lindor almost a
year ago, while still a 22
year old, the question
was asked if he ever
worried about giving his
all or doing his best
during the long 162
game schedule his team
plays. Lindor’s response
was something like this:
“My father’s name is on
the back of my jersey
and my employer’s
name is on the front. No
way am I going to
embarrass either of
them.” The
commentator felt that
such an answer showed a
young man who
understood who he was whom he represented,
and what that meant for how he would always
play the game.
Not a bad thought for us
as Christians. In our
baptism we were given
the name of Child of
God. Our connection to
a Christian church such
as Trinity is a public

statement that we claim
God as our Father and
Jesus as our Saviour. We
were given the call to be
witnesses for and
disciples of Jesus each
moment of our lives.
And we were told how to
live – ‘love the Lord thy
God with all your heart
and mind and soul, and
love your neighbour as
yourself’ – in order to
“play the game” of life as
a child of God. We have
just celebrated the
resurrection of Christ
after remembering his
death in our place as the
payment for our sins.
That death and
resurrection are the
source of our strength (as
we live in constant
forgiveness and filled by
the Holy Spirit) and the
inspiration for our actions
(we love because he first
loved us). May we as
God’s children always
remember that our
Father’s name is on us
and that we represent our
Saviour and his whole
family so that we may
strive to not embarrass
but rather to honour our
God with our lives.

Our annual fundraiser, a Walk/Run for Love, will take
place on May 6, 2017. We will meet at Faith Lutheran
Church and walk or run a 5 km course through
Confederation Park. If you love to walk or run, come

For children 4 yrs (by Sept) to Grade 6
VBS 2017 is a victory celebration! In Mighty Fortress VBS, children learn that in Jesus, the victory is won! They’ll look into the Bible, God’s Holy Word, and explore five Bible accounts about God, our Mighty Fortress, and the victory Jesus has won for us.
We pray that Mighty Fortress gives us opportunities to introduce children and their families to Christ. We hope to help our own children grow in their faith in Jesus while reaching out to children in our neighborhood. This makes VBS a key outreach ministry in our congregation and our local community.
Here are some ways that you can help:
• Pray for our volunteers and the children and families who participate.
• Enroll your children or grandchildren in Mighty Fortress and invite friends and neighbors too.
• Volunteer to help. There are many jobs, even if you can’t be here during VBS week. Watch for the sign-up sheet coming soon.
Please contact Kari Bolen or Tilly Gamble if you can help out with this fun and meaningful ministry!
Blessing of the Quilts will take place during the
Sunday May 7 worship service. The quilts will
then be distributed locally and through Canadian
Lutheran World Relief around the world. Many,
many are blessed through our Quilting Ministry!

“Where’s Waldo” Diagram
Ephesians is an extremely life changing book of the Bible, as the Sunday
morning Coffee House group has discovered. It goes from the
fundamentals of our Christian faith to practical application in life
situations, our families and marriage. It is one of the best places to see
God’s plan for helping others come to Jesus and ultimately change and
then make more followers. This is the part that I tried to capture in the
diagram I have included in this Trinity Times. Search its many words,
phrases and directions. Ponder and pray about their meaning for you and
for Trinity. The Holy Spirit uses many ways to get our attention and
change us. If you have any thoughts or questions just ask me or one of the
Coffee House Group. May God bless us all on the journey of discipleship.
Gordon Frank.

May 2017 Stewardship Newsletter Article
Then Jesus, the Son of
God, gave them a
second gift, a gift from
what only He could
give—a gift from
above. He took the
bread and the fish, gave
thanks, blessed them,
and distributed them to
the crowd. Then came
the miracle. As these
five loaves and two fish
were given out, they
multiplied. He fed the
hungry crowd until they
were all full. And
twelve baskets full were
left over.
But Jesus was not the
only one who gave that
day. There is one person
who also gave from
what he had. It was the
boy with the five loaves
and the two fish. All the
others, including the
boy, received the gift of
a miraculous feast. And
they would look back
on it with wonder. But
the boy, when he would
look back on it, would
look back and
remember not just what
he received. He would
look back with wonder
and delight when the
Son of God made his
gift into something
miraculous. For it is
more blessed to give
than to receive.
This our Lord does for
each of us. He presses
our gifts, no matter how
big or how small, into
His service and works
wonders with them. He
provides through what
we give: water for
baptism, bread and wine
for the Lord’s Supper, a
man called and sent for
the preaching of the
Gospel and Absolution.
He provides a building
in which we can gather
as His children, lights
so that we might not
gather in darkness. He
provides funds for the
care of the poor and
struggling, for
missionaries who
preach and teach
beyond our borders. He
makes Christians,
disciples of our Lord
and Savior, Jesus Christ
in our midst by bringing
them to faith and
nurturing them in that
faith. He takes our gifts
and turns them into
something miraculous.
Indeed, it is more
blessed to give than to
receive. Thus we give.
We give of what we
have. And the Lord
works His wonders.

“It is more blessed to
give than to receive,”
said St. Paul, quoting
our Lord (Acts
20:35). How can this
be?
Jesus and His
disciples withdrew to
a mountain by the
shore of the Sea of
Galilee. The crowds
followed them, for
the Lord had just
showered upon them
the gift of His
teaching, the gift of
His Word. But the
day was waning; the
sun was setting, and it
was getting late.
Looking upon the
crowds, Jesus had
compassion on them
and asked, “Where
are we to buy bread,
so that these people
may eat” (John 6:5)?
Philip said that two
hundred denarii (a
day’s wages for two
hun-dred men) could
not buy enough bread
for each of them to
get a little.
But Andrew, Peter’s
brother, brought a
young boy forward,
who had five barley
loaves and two small
fish. “But,” Andrew
asked, “what are they
for so many” (John
6:9). Jesus replied,
“Have the people sit
down” (John 6:10).
