Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

I can remember when I was in college and the Mansfield University Concert Choir toured Italy, Austria,

and Germany for two weeks, singing in churches and cathedrals. We sang at St. Peter’s in Rome, which is

enormous. We sang in a small white country church in Germany, which was one of the most beautiful

places I have ever seen. We even sang in nursing homes, in St. Peter’s Square, and for a congregation

celebrating its 800th anniversary! Our repertoire for the tour was religious music, and in each song I could

sense God in that space. It was during that trip my sense of call to become a parish pastor was affirmed.

It may be a far cry from 800 years old, and it may not be lined with marble or host the world’s

dignitaries, but our sanctuary here at Trindle Spring Lutheran Church always gives me the same sense of

God’s presence as those sanctuaries that have been a part of worshipping our God for centuries. I think

that part of it is knowing that this space is set aside to sing God’s praises, to celebrate faith and life

milestones, and ask for God’s blessing and presence on and in our lives. Our sanctuary has a unique

purpose and place in the life of this congregation. It may not be the only place where God is present with

us, but it is an important place where God promises to always meet us in word and sacrament, in prayer

and praise, each time we gather together.

On Sunday, December 2nd we are going to be celebrating; celebrating the 25th anniversary of our

sanctuary. But more importantly, we will celebrate the ministry, worship, music, and the history of our

relationship with God that this space represents. From the stained-glass windows and baptismal font, to

the altar and pulpit; these items came from the old church building across the street and into our space

here, which continues to be a part of faithful, meaningful, and genuine worship that will last for years to

come. I hope that this space we call God’s house is a place where you feel God’s presence each week. I

know that I do. Come and be a part of our celebration on December 2nd at 10:30am, stay for lunch, and

help us give thanks to God at the beginning of the Advent season for a beautiful place to worship.

Trindle Spring Lutheran Church Council Meeting October 1, 2018 (Draft)

CALL TO ORDER

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm. In attendance were: Robin Cleaver, Myra Badorf, Joe Ricci, Pastor Aaron, Pastor Sigrid, Sherry Stoner, Brian Keister, Carlotta Strohl, John Talton, and Bobby Phillips

Absent: Erica Reinfeld, Ruth Knaub, and David Boose

Guests: Keith Greiss and Scott Durnin

OPENING DEVOTIONS

Devotions were offered by Pastor Aaron, based upon Psalm 8 which describes man as being just below God despite God’s majesty. It raises the question of stewardship and our responsibility for responding to the dominion over the works of God’s hands. Pastor Aaron challenged council to question what it means to have dominion over God’s creation.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Sherry Stoner provided a review of the Vision in Ministry Funds. She noted that some of the smaller memorial funds have been combined into a general memorial fund. She also noted that the Seminary Endowment Fund is about 330 dollars short of the pledge made by the congregation. Joe Ricci pointed out that the quarter banks were emptied and produced about 240 dollars to be added to the account. Therefore, we are about 100 dollars short of our $25,000.00 pledge.

The treasurer’s report was accepted subject to audit. Presentation of proposed 2019 Budget

Keith Greiss and Scott Durnin presented a review of the Finance Committee’s budget suggestions for 2019. Discussion was had about the budget requests for each committee and the recommendations for action on those budget requests. Additionally, discussion was made concerning personnel decisions. It was recommended that permanent staff receive a 2% salary increase. The overall budget proposal calls for a balanced budget of $403,405.00.

Sherry Stoner moved to accept the proposed 2019 budget. The motion was seconded by Myra Badorf. Motion APPROVED.

Review of September 2018 Council Meeting Minutes

Motion to accept the minutes as amended from the September meeting made by Sherry Stoner. Second by John Talton. Motion APPROVED. LEAD PASTOR’S REPORT

Pastor Aaron provided a written report. Pastor Aaron made a motion to approve Terry & Diane Hartzell and Ronald & Betty Albert as new members on October 14th. Brian Keister seconded the motion. Motion APPROVED. Pastor Aaron had nothing else to add beyond his written report.

ASSOCIATE PASTOR’S REPORT

Pastor Sigrid submitted a written report. COMMITTEE REPORTS/BUSINESS

Property Committee We are continuing to experience leaks from the steeple. The steeple was recently resealed. There is no water damage at this time. Property is aware of the issue and continuing to monitor the situation. It may be necessary to have occasional resealing of the steeple every couple of years. Property has recommended adopting a water only policy in the sanctuary. An exception is suggested for children who are still drinking from bottles to use non-spillable sippy cups. The consensus of council was that a formal policy is not needed at this time.

Old Business

Council Nominations Council is still seeking nominations for the upcoming council vacancies.

Audit Committee Nomination Council is in need of a nominee for the three-year vacancy.


Old Business (Cont’d)

Historic Structure Structural Integrity Review

Robin Cleaver obtained a structural integrity report from Craig Tillman. He reported that aside from the back stairwell, which should be rebuilt, the building is structurally sound. He suggests that asbestos abatement would cost more than $20,000. Replacement of the HVAC system would cost more than $150,000.00 and replacement of the rear stairwell would cost more than $200,000.00. It was suggested that we should hold a number of cottage meetings to get that sense of the congregation on desires for a plan for the historic structure.

Carpeting and Painting Update

The property and finance committees will be asked to develop a plan for phase two of the painting and carpeting project. It is hoped that there will be an ability to discuss this at the Congregational meeting in November. Constitution/Bylaws Review

The ELCA Churchwide Assembly is scheduled to take place in the summer of 2019 at which time another round of amendments may be offered. It was suggested that rather than rush changes for this year’s Congregational meeting we should take our time and plan on a Constitution and Bylaws revision for the 2019 Congregational meeting. New Business

Nomination of Voting members for Synod Assembly The 2019 Synod Assembly will be electing a Bishop. As a result, we should have our voting members selected before the first conference meeting scheduled for January 27, 2019. The voting members will be one male, one female, and one person under the age of 30.

Good and Welfare

Building Use Policy

The policy adopted in 2016 does not speak to who is authorized to grant permission for the use of the building. It was suggested that staff should be permitted to decide if council needs to be involved in the decision making. This permits the flexibility to grant permission when there are requests made on short time frames. Since the policy has been in place for two years it was suggested that the policy be reviewed to determine if it is working or if there are amendments required. Council agreed to create a task force to review the current policy and make recommendations back to council for clarification or modification of the policy. Newsletter

Pastor Aaron raised the question of whether it is necessary to place the entire set of minutes in the newsletter since the minutes are posted on the bulletin board. He asked if a summary of the minutes would be adequate for newsletter purposes. This would save paper and lower costs. Concern was expressed about what the summary would say and who would decide what should be highlighted and in what way. It was suggested that this should be a topic for the Congregational meeting. Robin noted that there is a lot going on and reminded everyone to be mindful of the calendar. She reminded us of the Congregational meeting scheduled for November 18th. Adjournment

In Worship This Month…

Sunday, November 4 ~ All Saints Sunday

On All Saints, we give thanks for the communion of saints, through which all those who belong to Christ are alive in him and present to each other, across the barriers of time and space, and even of death itself. There are many special elements to this service. We will recognize those of our congregation who have died in the last year. You will also once again have the opportunity to light candles in honor of other saints and to bring in photos of loved ones to put on the window sills around the sanctuary. Finally, the altar will be covered with the cloth on which you wrote the names of saints not physically with us, as a reminder of the communion of saints we enjoy at the Lord’s Supper.

Sunday, November 11 ~ 25th Sunday after Pentecost

Today in both the first lesson and gospel reading we see widows who give generously of their meager resources, providing us a window into what it’s like to live with a lively sense of God’s abundance.

Sunday, November 18 ~ 26th Sunday after Pentecost

The readings on this day begin to turn our eyes and hearts to the final resurrection and the end time. We lean in trust on Christ’s promises given to us in baptism and, as Hebrews reminds us, meet together to pro-voke one another to love.

Tuesday, November 20 ~ Thanksgiving Service

We will gather at 7 p.m. around Word and Meal to give our thanks and praise to God. (Note that the service will be on Tuesday this year.)

Sunday, November 25 ~ Christ the King Sunday

On this day, the last of the church calendar year, we contemplate Jesus as king, whose authority comes from the truth to which he bears witness, and who reigns not in the way of human kings, but with self-giving and transformative love.

Congregational meeting and preview session Don’t forget that our annual congregational meeting is on Sunday, November 18. Following both worship services that day is a luncheon, and the meeting will follow immediately after the luncheon. In preparation for the meeting there will be an informational session during the Christian Education hour on Sunday, November 11 in order to take questions and explain what is on the agenda.

TSLC IS SEEKING A NEW VOM TREASURER

After many years of dedicated service, Bob McGregor will be stepping down as Vision of Ministry Treasurer for Trindle Spring Lutheran Church at the end of 2018. We would like to thank Bob immensely for this important volunteer work.

We are now seeking a church member to fill this volunteer position. Some accounting experience is desirable, but not necessary. Following are some of the responsibilities of this role:

The VOM Treasurer’s position is responsible for administration of three funds. These include the Vision of Ministry fund, formerly known as the Building Fund. There are two checking accounts utilized; the primary account is at Orrstown Bank and the secondary account is with the Mission Investment Fund at the ELCA. Approximately two dozen checks are written each year. This is outside of the Bond program’s interest and payoffs which is ending this year (2018). Essentially all receipts/deposits are handled by the Counting Teams, and recorded on the weekly Tabulation sheets.

The second account administered is the Capital Improvement Fund, formerly known as the Congregation Project Fund and Country Fair. Approximately six checks are written each year. Deposits are again made by the Counting Teams and recorded on the Tab sheets.

The third account is a Youth checking account at Mission Investment Fund of the ELCA. About a dozen checks are written over a three year cycle that coincides with the Youth Gathering mission trip of the ELCA congregations. Receipts are first processed through the Vision of Ministry account, then forwarded to the MIF-ELCA on a periodic basis.

Reports are prepared monthly/yearly for each account for the Finance Committee and Council. Audits are also conducted by Trindle Spring personnel on a yearly basis. It is anticipated that no more than two hours per month of time will be required for this position.

ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

Fall programming is off to a great start, and we want

to make sure that you know the opportunities for

adult faith formation that are available. Try one or

sample them all, but we want to invite you to

continue to learn and grow in your faith. Below is a

brief description of each offering.

Young at Heart is our lectionary-based class. They

look at the readings that are used in worship that

morning and talk about how they apply to our lives.

The Far Side class is studying the Henri Nouwen

book, “The Prodigal Son.”

Crossroads is our class that talks about current

events from a biblical and faith perspective. They

meet in the room across from the lounge.

Friday morning study is a group that meets at 7am

on Friday mornings for Bible study and

conversation. They are currently working their way

through the Gospel of Matthew. New folks are

welcome at any time.

Adult Forum primarily is led by the pastors; topics

change throughout the year. This month wraps up the

study on questions of faith; a new study on the

Christmas story begins on November 25th.

The Shawl Ministry wants to invite you to join us on November 25th at 3:00 in the church lounge.

The Holy Spirit works among us as we work with our hands to the glory of God to share God’s love and

ours with those who are facing difficult times. If you love to fellowship with other followers, if you want to

learn how to knit or crochet, if you would like to learn how to make hats for the homeless on a loom, if you

could help to make plarn used to make mats for the homeless, join us at our next meeting. No experience

required for many of our activities.

CHRISTMAS BLESSING EXPRESS for New Hope Ministries! The Outreach Committee has placed a Christmas “Giving” Tree in the narthex with suggested items to be donated to families in need this holiday season. If you are able to donate this year, please choose an ornament from the tree and return the unwrapped item (with ornament attached) to bins placed by the tree.

Food baskets are also requested to provide a Christmas Dinner. Any of the following items would be greatly appreciated: ham, turkey, vegetables, gravy, potatoes, canned fruit, cranberry sauce, pie filling, pie crust, and boxed stuffing.

Please place refrigerated items in kitchen refrigerator/freezer marked, “New Hope Christmas” at the end of November!

We ask all items to be donated by Dec. 2nd for delivery to New Hope by Dec. 3rd!

On Sunday, Dec. 2, the Visitation Ministry Teams are scheduled to meet in Fellowship Hall

at 2:00 pm to set up the schedule for visiting our church family homebound members for 2019.

I hope all volunteers that visited this past year will be there, as well as any new people

who would like to join us in this very rewarding and uplifting ministry.

If you are unable to make the meeting but are willing to join in visitation, please let

Paula Duffie know at 717-805-6122 prior to the meeting. When we have 40 people who

are willing to visit, going out in teams of two, we see a different homebound member every 2 months.

Advent Devotions are Coming!

Your Advent Devotion committee has been busy making plans for this year’s devotion booklet. Our theme for this Advent will be the Jesse Tree. We are hoping that each family will add to their devotional traditions during Advent with a Jesse Tree as well as the Advent wreaths that were made last year. Jesse was the father of King David from the Old Testament. In the book of Isaiah, we read, “There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse and a branch shall grow out of his roots. And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.” From this reading came the idea of creating a genealogy for Jesus. Each day is a brief look at

a different person on Jesus’ “Family Tree”. Advent devotion booklets will be ready for pick

up on Sunday, December 2 in the Narthex. For anyone interested in creating their own Jesse

Tree, there will be a packet of ornaments also available. We are thankful to Kathryn Marrcellino, author of Jesse Tree Ornaments, for giving us permission to use

most of her ornaments as part of our project this year.

THE WORSHIP AND MUSIC COMMITTEE - is looking for some smiling faces to be greeters on Sunday mornings before the 8:00 a.m. and the 10:30 a.m. services and sometimes in the evenings during Lent, Advent, Holy Week, and Thanksgiving services. If you would like to be a greeter we would love to have your help. Please check the bulletin board outside the kitchen and sign your name on the date and service time that you would like. No special training required, all you have to do is to be there about 15 to 20 minutes before the service begins. There are also sign-up sheets for lay readers there as well as communion assistants. If you have any questions about these jobs, please check with Nancy Hornberger or Pastor Aaron. We would love to have your help in these important ministries of the church.

FROM OUR CHOIR DIRECTOR: MEN'S CHOIR:

It's time once again to gather all the TSLC Men - a pick-up Men's Choir will be singing for 10:30am worship on Sunday, December 23. Rehearsals will be from 9-9:30am on the following Sundays: December 2, 9, and 16. We hope you will join us! Contact Danielle Erdley if you have questions! TSLC ORCHESTRA READY FOR YEAR 4!!!

It's time once again to dust off those instruments and get ready to join other TSLC musicians for our annual Christmas orchestra! The TSLC Orchestra will be playing prelude music for the 8:30pm Christmas Eve service.

All those who have played with the orchestra before should have received an email from Danielle Erdley to discuss possible rehearsal dates and times. If you haven't, please contact her ASAP. If you have not played with the orchestra before but would like to, please contact Danielle so she can add you to her list. Musicians of all ability levels are welcome!!!! Whether you are in 4th grade and just started playing, a retiree who hasn't touched their instrument in 20 years, or someone who plays every week - we have a place for you!

Music will be passed out in early November and rehearsals will begin after Thanksgiving. We hope this will be the orchestra's biggest year yet!

Simply buy GIANT gift cards through TSLC in $25, $50, or $100 denominations. When you use the gift cards to pay for your groceries or gas at GIANT, TSLC receives 5% of what you spend. TSLC uses all money received through this program to support our youth and their trip to the ELCA Youth Gathering.

Parish News

Friday mornings a group meets at the church at 7am and is usually done by 8am so that people can head off to work or wherever else their day takes them. The group is presently studying the application of the Book of Matthew in our lives. As we continue into fall, please be careful driving. When leaves come down on roadways, they can become slick, increasing your stopping distance. Please adjust your following distance to allow for the increased stopping distance. We have received several inquiries about upcoming CPR trainings. We will be announcing additional training dates and will need a minimum of 6 individuals to form a class. We strongly encourage anyone who serves as an Usher, Teacher, VBS Teacher, Council Member, or helps with Second Saturday Meals to be trained. So far this year we have trained 45 members of our congregation. Thank you to those 45 individuals who took the time to get trained. As I’ve said before, I hope you never have to use these valuable skills, but I’m sure if called upon, then you will be able to respond and hopefully make a difference.

TSLC SPONSORS A COMPASSION INTERNATIONAL CHILD MEET ROSE DARLINE AUGUSTE FROM HAITI!

Our church has been sponsoring a child for years with this organization. Currently we have an 11-year-old girl from Haiti. Her name is Rose Darline Auguste. She lives with her parents in a mountainous community of Finel, home to around 12,000 residents. Our sponsorship allows the staff of Finel Child Development Center to provide Darline with Bible teaching, health education, medical care, recreational activities, academic support and scholastic materials. Darline would love to have a letter from any member of our

congregation. In fact, last month’s Day of Service we wrote several letters to her. If you are interested in writing to Darline, her Child Number is HA-689-4548, and our sponsor Number is 1481429-5. Call Lois Witmer at 717-766-7091 (church office) for information.

SHARE CHRISTMAS 2018

This year the Outreach Ministry Committee has decided to give an offering to ELCA Lutheran Disaster Response, focusing on the flooding by Hurricane Florence.

The Lutheran Disaster Response through Lutheran Services Carolinas has made an initial financial commitment to support immediate relief efforts in the most impacted communities in both North and South Carolina with relief supplies which may include water, food and other basic needs.

Lutheran Disaster Response brings God’s hope and healing and renewal to people whose lives have been disrupted by disaster in the United States. When the dust settles and the headlines change, they stay to provide ongoing assistance to those in need.

You can give to this cause by using your Share Christmas envelope provided in your contribution envelope packet. There are Share Christmas Envelopes in the pews as well. Also you can give electronically on our website at www.trindlespringlutheran.org

The children in the Christian Education program will also be collecting funds. Thanks for caring and sharing for those in need.

ADVENT EVENT / HANGING OF THE GREENS – WELCOME THE ADVENT SEASON WITH AN AFTERNOON OF FELLOWSHIP!

The Fellowship Committee will be hosting an Advent Event on Sunday, November 25th at 3:00 p.m. We will be starting the afternoon by creating some wonderful seasonal crafts to use during the holiday season as well as several “crafty” service projects. For those of you that are not quite so “crafty”, we will be using this time to decorate the sanctuary for the Advent season. After we have completed the crafts and decorating, we will join together for a short service and carol-sing followed by a pot-luck dinner. All types of crafts will be available, even some geared specifically for those adult crafters who are up for a challenge. All crafts will be displayed on a table in the narthex along with a sign-up sheet to indicate which of the crafts you would like to do. We especially need some man-power to help with some of the more difficult decorating tasks. We will have a separate sign-up sheet to indicate the # of people attending, whether you will be doing crafts, service projects, or decorating and what each would be willing to bring for the dinner. Drinks will be provided by the committee, but we are looking forward to sharing all sorts of good “pot-luck” dishes provided by the participants. Deadline for signing up is November 11th. Don’t miss this opportunity to start the Advent Season by sharing in fun and fellowship with your family at Trindle Spring.
