Colgan keen on Derby number seven(Continued from page 1)

Travelling light (nZ) (el Roca).“I didn’t get a lot of sleep on Friday night as I was thinking

about the race and how it might unfold,” he said.“Those small fields can be very tricky and tough to ride in

as normal race patterns can get turned upside down.“I was also thinking about where we might be in relation

to the other two guns although that got thrown out a little when Dragon leap had to be scratched.

“It was a shame he didn’t start as it would have been a great guide to the Derby with him being the favourite for that race.

“We managed to beat him at ellerslie the first time we clashed but he is a real talent and I know he will be very tough to beat if we meet him in the Derby.

“I guess the advantage is with us a little now as his preparation has had a hiccup which they will need to manage and we have been pretty much smooth sailing.”

Colgan admits he is a good place with his riding at present as he contemplates how much longer he will continue his career in the saddle.

“I’m feeling pretty good at present although the aches and pains are a little more frequent,” he said.

“I’m 44 now and getting a bit long in the tooth but I’d like to think I’ve got at least another six years or so in the saddle to come.

“I find these days the injury niggles are a little harder to overcome and when you walk in the jockeys’ room there are all these eighteen to twenty-year-olds bouncing around with boundless energy but I feel I can still compete with them.

“I’m really happy with my riding and my life as I have a wonderful partner and family and I still love what I do.

“I think that really shows in the way a jockey rides as when you have that confidence it translates out on to the track.

“When things aren’t going that well it also shows but I’m loving life and where I’m at right now.” – nZ Racing Desk

get her into a race that Colgan believes is perfect for her.“She is a very talented filly who I don’t think we have even

scratched the surface on yet,” Colgan said.“The feel she gives you when you ride her is very special

and I can say with certainty that there have been several of my Derby winners that haven’t provided me with anywhere near the feel that this filly does.

“I know she isn’t nominated for the Derby and is still in the oaks (gr.1, 2400m) at Trentham, however I think the Derby would be a much better fit for her.

“She has a good record and plenty of experience at ellerslie and the three weeks between her run on Saturday and the Derby will be perfect for her.

“one of her best attributes is her ability to settle in a good position in her races and then switch off and relax.

“She did that again on Saturday and then showed how good she can be off a run like that.”

Colgan found himself in the unfamiliar position of dealing with some pre-race nerves before Saturday’s victory as he weighed up his tactics and his clash with two of this season’s well performed three-year-olds in Dragon leap (Pierro) and

Matamata-based rider Vinnie Colgan (Trish Dunell)

Super Seth may target the Gr.1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) on February 22 rather than the Gr.3 C S Hayes Stakes (1400m) this weekend (Supplied)

Caulfield guineas winner Super Seth (Dundeel) could bypass the gr.3 C S Hayes Stakes

(1400m) and a rematch with alligator Blood (all Too Hard) to instead chase a group one win in the Futurity Stakes (1400m)

The anthony Freedman-trained colt, who is now majority owned by Waikato Stud, made a stylish return to win the gr.3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) and will be nominated for Saturday’s C S Hayes (1400m) at Caulfield.

The C S Hayes is set to feature Queensland’s top three-year-old alligator Blood, who Super Seth

narrowly beat in the gr.1 Caulfield guineas (1600m), as well as star new Zealand gelding Catalyst (nZ) (Darci Brahma) who will make his australian debut.

But Freedman’s son and assistant trainer, Sam Freedman, said Super Seth may instead run against older horses in the weight-for-age Futurity a week later.

“We’re still undecided whether he goes to the C S Hayes or goes to the Futurity,” Freedman said.

“He’ll be nominated for the C S Hayes and we’ll probably work him on Tuesday morning and then make a

decision.“But alabama express winning

the C F orr Stakes yesterday probably gives you more confidence if we do decide to go to the weight-for-age route.

“He has come through his run really well so wherever he goes he should be running well.”

If connections opt to go to the Futurity, Super Seth would probably not run in the gr.1 australian guineas (1600m) a week later.

“It’s probably unlikely we’d back him up, but you never say never,” Freedman said. - aaP

in the Cox Plate (gr.1, 2040m) in the spring.”

Rip Van Winkle sits in fifth place in the new Zealand sires’ premiership this season with 23 winners and more than $860,000 in total prize-money.

He has sired a total of 398 winners from 691 runners worldwide, with 31 individual stakes winners headed by the group one pair of Te akau Shark and the Phoenix Stakes (1200m) winner Dick Whittington.

He started shuttling to Windsor Park nine years ago, and he has been represented by 92 winners from 165 runners in new Zealand. There have been 16 individual stakes winners in new Zealand, with Te akau Shark and Jennifer eccles joined by fellow group

winners Capella (nZ), lasarla (nZ), Sleeping Beauty (nZ), Bizzwinkle (nZ), let Her Rip (nZ), germanicus (nZ) and Magic Dancer (nZ).

“He himself was a world-class miler and one of the highest-rated horses to go to stud in new Zealand,” Till said. “He’s also a son of arguably the greatest sire of the modern era in galileo, so he provided a wonderful opportunity to breeders in this part of the world and he has always been well supported.

“I think his progeny benefit from considerate handling, and Te akau Shark is the perfect example of that. When a horse has the sort of motor that he has, you can run the risk of really rattling the chassis. Jamie Richards has

Windsor Park Stud’s young guns have dominated the limelight in recent times with

first-season sire titles for Shamexpress and Charm Spirit, but Saturday was all about Rip Van Winkle.

The Te Rapa meeting delivered the biggest day of the galileo stallion’s career. Te akau Shark (nZ) became his first southern hemisphere group one winner with a supreme performance in the BCD group Sprint (1400m), while Jennifer eccles (nZ) won the gr.2 David & karyn ellis Fillies’ Classic (2000m) with breath-taking ease.

“It was certainly a red-letter day in his career at stud,” Windsor Park general manager Steve Till said.

“To get a group-race double, and a group one winner to boot, is tremendous. It just adds to a great season he’s been having. It follows on from germanicus in the gr.3 anniversary (1600m) at Trentham a few weeks ago, while Subpoenaed is an impressive recent winner for Chris Waller who’s on a group one path in the autumn in Sydney.

“He’s always been a very good sire of fillies. Subpoenaed is hugely promising, and Jennifer eccles showed again yesterday that she is one of the very best fillies in new Zealand this season.

“But it’s great that Rip Van Winkle has a world-class male as well in Te akau Shark. International ratings confirm that, and so did his performance against lys gracieux

for a stallion to be able to instil in his progeny.”

Rip Van Winkle originally shuttled from Coolmore in Ireland, but Windsor Park has been his home since 2017.

“We bought out Coolmore and he’s a permanent resident here now,” Till said. “He’s continued to have good books of mares, and he’s got some very good crops ahead of him.

“He’s shown an ability to upgrade families, and he has also produced successful progeny right across the spectrum of the gene pool – from high-class families to those who might be at

2020 new Zealand Bloodstock national Yearling Sales at karaka.

Windsor Park sold 23 yearlings in the Book 1 session for a total of $2.72 million, averaging $118,261 and featuring the stud’s best-ever karaka price of $875,000 for a colt by Savabeel out of Bayrock.

“overall, I think it was a successful sale, for us and in general,” Till said.

“looking at the aggregate over the duration of the week, it was roughly on a par with last year. It was possibly spread a bit more around the industry, which has to be beneficial.

“Initiatives instigated by new Zealand Bloodstock appeared to be successful. It’s important that it continues and we do everything we can to promote the success of the industry, and to get people from our main markets to keep coming to buy our horses.

“The buyers list indicates that there was great support from new Zealand and australian buyers at karaka, which is so crucial.

“We still have our challenges, but those are indicative of the wider challenges the industry faces. Changes need to be made to claw back the ground that we’ve lost.

“The legislation reform that’s progressing through at the moment needs to be implemented. once that happens and the benefits start to filter back into the industry, that will drive confidence and further investment.”

done a wonderful job of nurturing him and giving him the time he needs.

“Shaune Ritchie has also done brilliantly with Jennifer eccles. She was performing at a high level way back in the spring at Hawke’s Bay, and she’s just kept improving. She has displayed durable qualities and a cast-iron constitution, and she looks to be absolutely thriving.

“Both Te akau Shark and Jennifer eccles have got a devastating turn of foot, which Rip Van Winkle himself had. It’s a very special attribute to have in a racehorse, and a very special attribute

with families from the Danzig line, which is the case for both Te akau Shark (out of a daughter of Danzig’s grandson Chief Bearheart) and Jennifer eccles (out of a daughter of the Danzig stallion elnadim).”

Rip Van Winkle stood for a fee of $12,500 in the 2019 season and is a senior statesman on a roster that also features the youngsters Shamexpress, Charm Spirit, Mongolian khan, Turn Me loose, Rageese and Vanbrugh.

Alabama Express winning the Gr.1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) (Bruno Cannatelli)

leading Bloodstock agent Paul Moroney believes that impressive three-year-old Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice) is the perfect type of horse for the new Zealand

stallion market once he is retired from the racetrack. However, he is also realistic that that scenario may

not evolve given the potential demand from a number of australian Stud farms including the Redoute’s Choice colt’s part-owners, arrowfield Stud.

Trained by Moroney’s brother Mike from his Flemington base, alabama express enhanced his future prospects in the breeding barn with a stunning victory in Saturday’s gr.1 C F orr Stakes (1400m) against the older horses at Caulfield.

Purchased by Moroney from the Sydney easter Sale for $280,000, alabama express impressed him from the minute he saw him with Moroney of the opinion he was secured for a real bargain even before Saturday’s victory.

“He was a stunning individual and we were very keen to get him when he went through the ring,” Moroney said.

“When we ended up paying $280,000, we both thought we got him for a very good price and I guess with what happened on Saturday that now franks our original opinion.”

alabama express has now won four of his seven starts and

phone has been going again in the last 24 hours.“With arrowfield in his ownership they will have a large

bearing on where his future lies at stud but in my heart, I think he is the type of horse that would be perfect for the new Zealand breeding scene.

“By Redoute’s Choice out of an encosta De lago mare, he is just the type of colt that we need in new Zealand to keep refreshing our bloodlines.

“Savabeel is our leading sire and has done a magnificent job but these are the types of colts that our studs need to be investing in to improve our industry.”

alabama express was ridden to victory by kiwi jockey Mick Dee and became the 37th individual group one winner selected by Paul Moroney, with those horses having won a combined 53 group ones.

emulated his sire Redoute’s Choice, who won the orr Stakes 20 years ago.

While there had been interest from a number of breeding operations before Saturday, Moroney knows that will ramp up now the colt has a group one victory against the older horses under his belt.

“I was talking with Mike on Saturday night and we think that win probably values him in the $8-$10million range right now,” Moroney said.

“Mike had fielded interest from a number of australasian farms before Saturday and the

“She has a bit of a tendency to bounce around in the barriers, and in that race she just bounced at the wrong time and missed the start,” allpress said. “That kind of put an end to her chances that day. It was good to get back on her yesterday and get things right this time.

“He’s a lovely horse and won really well yesterday,” allpress said. “He’s another one who tries really hard for you, and he was presented in great order. I think he’s got a pretty good future.”

Saturday’s double lifted allpress to 56 wins for the season from 367 rides, and she sits in third place on the national premiership behind kozzi asano (71 wins) and Sam Collett (64).

“getting on a couple of really nice horses yesterday certainly helped my strike rate a little bit,” she said. “But I’m happy with how things are going, it’s been a pretty good season. I’m naturally very competitive, so whenever I get out there, I want to be performing at my very best.”

a rise in class did little to halt the promising On Line (NZ) (o’Reilly) in his tracks on Sunday.

Raced by Thai outfit Falcon Racing no 7 Stable, the o’Reilly four-year-old has now racked up four wins at his last five starts.

a winner at Class 4 level over seven furlongs at his last start one month ago, on line was just as lethal when pitted against Class 3 rivals over a trip which connections had been looking to set him on for a while now – 1800m.

Ridden by champion apprentice jockey Simon kok Wei

On Line relished a step up in class at Kranji (STC)

Hoong, on line enjoyed an economical run in transit. When the gaps opened up at the 300m, the bay gelding let down with a short sharp burst that carried him to victory.

Clements saw the win as a confirmation that on line can run a trip and can also account for better than bread-and-better class.

“We’ve been wanting to run him over a distance for a while. He is bred for it, and everything he’s done, he’s shown that,” said the Zimbabwean-born conditioner.

“It was a good confident ride from Simon. It was quite a soft win in the end as it was not the toughest of fields to beat.

“He’s a progressive sort and I think he now has enough points to qualify for the 4Yo series. We’ll look at a Class 3 race over 1600m next and then run him in the second leg – we wouldn’t want to go for the first leg.”

The Singapore Four-Year-old Challenge kicks off with the Silver Bowl (1400m) in three weeks’ time on February 29. on line will be aimed at the second leg instead, the Stewards’ Cup (1600m) on March 20.

God’s Gift storms to victory at Kranji (STC)

god’s Gift (NZ) (Haradasun) opened his account with a crushing win in the $75,000

Restricted Maiden race over 1600m at kranji on Sunday.

among one of the early backmarkers after he was snagged back at the rear, the Haradasun three-year-old, who was sent out as the $16 second favourite, started to improve noticeably from the half-mile, navigating through the bunched-up pack to put paid to his 11 rivals with a devastating acceleration.

Favourite Mighty Vain (Safeguard) came off a cosier run in the box seat, but could not muster an answer when god’s gift, under a confident ride by alysha Collett, zipped past to go and assert his clear superiority down the home straight.

Winning trainer Donna logan couldn’t have been greeted by a nicer gift indeed after returning from a horse-shopping trip back home at the karaka Yearling Sales.

“It’s a nice welcome-back present. I just came from new Zealand where I bought a couple to race back home first, and then they might end up here,” the kiwi handler said.

“This horse (god’s gift) has been knocking on the door and over the mile today, he was too good. I was a little bit concerned by the rain, I was not sure if the track would affect him.

“He also got back further than I wanted, but he obviously handled the track well. He’s a horse I bought at the new Zealand Ready-To-Run Sale and

was not disgraced in his runs thus far.“He’s looking for the mile and even

further now. He’d be a good middle-distance performer.”

Unplaced at his first two runs over 1200m last season, god’s gift started to show marked improvement when he was lengthened up over more ground.

He ran on for second in a Restricted Maiden race over 1400m at his last start in 2019 before producing the same nice closing sectionals at his last start when rising to the mile. Collett was in the irons for the second time that day (she rode him at his unplaced debut) and was confident the extra furlong would be a welcome boon on Sunday.

“originally, the plan was to be more forward from the sticky gate (11), but there was a lot of pressure from the inside. So, I decided to ride him more quietly and then just ride him for luck,”

Collett said.“The 1400m was too short for him at

his last run; he was looking for the mile. even though we were further back than we wanted, I knew I had them covered when we came within two lengths of the leaders at the home turn.”
