PUBLISHER ’SMESSAGE
Get active,get outdoors
Something about a beautiful shoreline or a colorfulsunset makes my feet want to walk. The fresh air andsounds of nature beckon me off the front porch, evenwhen I don’t feel like burning a bunch of calories. Butalmost like magic, the scenery has a way of making anytype of exercise feel like less like a workout and more likean adventure. The kayakers nestled in the marsh on the front cover
of this issue demonstrate just one of many ways you canfocus on health and wellness in southeast Georgiawithout sacrificing fun. The beautiful scenery andfamily-friendly programs offered by public and privateorganizations in the community are good incentives toturn off that electronic device and start making the mostof your health and your life. If you have children, thegood example you set by taking care of your own well-being can have lifelong benefits for them as well.I also believe that a positive attitude and a good sense
of humor can add years to your life. As we close out thisissue, humor columnist Carrie Paulk-Gay challenges usto find the silver linings that make our lives worth livingand laugh, even when it hurts.Enjoy!

Looking for a fitness center?Camden County has several gyms— both pubicly and privatelyowned —that are available at allhours of the day.
Page 4 Helping You Navigate Southeast Georgia August/September 2014
Diet and exercise makegreat bedfellows for men andwomen looking to live a healthier lifestyle. Acombination of a healthy diet and regular exercisemakes it easier for men and women to maintain a healthyweight while lowering their risk of various ailments, includingheart disease and diabetes.A heightened awareness of what makes for a healthy and un-
healthy diet coupled with the increased availability of healthy foodshas helped many people smoothly transition to a healthier diet. Butmany people still struggle to find time to exercise every day. Com-mitments to work and family can make it difficult to squeeze inregular workouts, and the call of the couch is often more appeal-ing than a trip to the gym at the end of a long day jug-gling both personal and professionalobligations. But exer-cise isintegralto ah e a l t h ylifestyle, so itis importantthat men andwomen take stepsto incorporate exer-cise into their daily routines.
Figure outwhen you’re free
Finding free time is perhaps the biggest hurdle adults must clearwhen attempting to exercise more. Track your daily schedule for aweek or two, making note of down times during the day when youmight be able to squeeze in 30 to 60 minutes of exercise. If younotice you’re spending your lunch hours catching up on personalemails or surfing the Internet, then consider joining a gym nearyour office and turning those lunch hours into workouts. If yourmornings are not dominated by getting the kids ready for school, then wake up a half hour earlier each morning to squeeze in sometime on the treadmill. You likely have some down time with regardto your daily schedule, and identifying such time is the first step to-ward making better use of it.

Make it a team effortDaily exercise is not just good for
adults; it’s great for kids, too. Parentslooking to fit more physical activityinto their daily routines should con-sider involving their children, many ofwhom are dealing with a fitness crisisof their own. According to a 2014 re-port in the Journal of the AmericanMedical Association, childhood obe-sity has more than doubled in childrenand quadrupled in adolescents overthe last three decades, putting young-sters at increased risk for cardiovascu-lar disease, prediabetes, bone and jointproblems, and sleep apnea. Parentscan make daily exercise a family affair, which increases the time they spendwith their children while ensuringtheir kids stay fit as well. Men andwomen without families also can makedaily exercise a team effort by workingout with a friend or significant other. The buddy system often proves moti-vational, encouraging men and womento exercise even on those days whenthe couch is calling.
Make exercisemore interesting
Many workout routines fall by thewayside because they simply do notengage men and women no matterhowmotivated they are to lose weight. An hour on the treadmill can seem likean eternity to certain men and women, who can benefit by choosing workoutroutines that are less monotonous. Forexample, the practice of combiningdance and aerobic exercise is growingin popularity. In lieu of spending anhour on the treadmill or elliptical ma-chine, those who choose a danceworkout can get an equally cardiovas-cular workout that many find morefun than traditional aerobic exercise, thanks to its incorporation of dance. For those without such happy feet, bring a tablet along to the gym andcatch up on your favorite televisionshows or a good book during your car-diovascular routines. The more inter-esting you find your workout routine, the more likely you are to find time forthat routine every day.

Choose anaccessible routineWhen planning your
workout, make it as accessi-ble as possible. While sportslike kayaking and mountainbike racing make for greatexercise, such activities arenot readily accessible tomany working professionalswith busy schedules. Join agym that’s only a short drivefrom home, or purchasesome gym equipment youcan set up in your own home. The more accessible a work-out routine is, the morelikely you are to embracethat routine.
The call of the couch canbe difficult to ignore. But theside effects of a sedentarylifestyle can be grave, so menand women should work tofind ways to include exercisein their daily routines.
Camden County has an averagetemperature of 67 degrees and almost anykind of outdoor exercise is possiblethroughout the year. Just remember to stayhydrated and wear sunscreen if you plan tobe outside during the hottest hours of theday.
*
* If you live near one ofthe many waterways incoastal Georgia, paddling bykayak or canoe could be anaccessible alternative to yourregular workout routine.

It has been a really hot summer.I don’t know about you, butthe last thing I would advise is
to move about very much with itbeing as hot as it is outside — un-less it entails a nice cool pool oran ocean. However, there are
places where the scenery and the adventure will feel right, nomatter what the thermometer reads. In Georgia, you can get intouch with your inner health as well as your outer health by get-ting active and enjoying some of these cool sites.
In Waycross, Laura S. Walker State Park sits just outside theenchanted Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, a place whereIndian warriors were brought to heal their wounds and restoretheir spirits. Inside the park, one of the best municipal golfcourses in the country challenges you to 18 holes of beautifulgreen and scenery. The Lakes, complete with a clubhouse, golfpro and rates for juniors and seniors feature undulating greensrather than tiered with links-style mounds that complement thecourse’s three lakes. To check availability, find specials and events, visit www.gastateparks.org/LauraSWalker.
Some say a horse’s soul can be easily seen by looking into itseyes. Horseback riding is a popular way to meditate, or speedyour pulse by galloping along the sand on one of Georgia’s beau-tiful barrier islands. Guided horseback tours are available on bothJekyll and St. Simons Island, as well as luxurious Sea Island. Viewtidal marshes, maritime forests and gorgeous beaches while re-laxing or book a private sunset tour.
Bike riding is always a great way to get and stay in shape. Takea weekend trip to the Atlanta area to ride the Silver Comet Trail. One of Georgia’s “Rails to Trails,” the 61.5-mile long trail be-
gins in Smyrna and winds its way through Cobb, Paulding andPolk counties ending in Cedartown, near the Alabama state line. The paved trail is perfect for bicyclists, walkers, hikers, rollerblades and is wheelchair accessible. Check out www.silver-cometga.com for more information regarding sites along the trailand ideas of what to bring for your adventure.
Whether you are an adrenaline junkie or you think you mightwant to be one, you should plan to experience the rapids that re-side in some of Georgia’s best rivers. The Chattooga River af-fords whitewater enthusiasts some of the best rafting anywhere. Its classification ranges from a two to a five, making it suitablefor rafters of various abilities. It also has Hollywood appeal be-cause of its connection to the film, “Deliverance.”
One of the wildest and most beautiful whitewater rivers in thesoutheastern US, the Chattooga begins at the base of White-sides Mountain in North Carolina and forms the northeasternborder between Georgia and South Carolina. As a free flowingriver, water levels on the Chattooga vary with the amount of rain-fall each season. The highest water levels and most exciting tripsare usually in the spring and early summer; by late summer andfall, the water level is usually lower and trips are more relaxedand slower paced.

■ DaytripperAmelia Island is just small enough to have retained its charac-
ter despite a booming annual tourist trade. Many of its visitorscome from right here in southeast Georgia and northeast Florida. They come for the laid-back vibe that can be felt all the way fromthe island’s historic downtown district to its windwept beaches. The island might escape the attention of the vacation-going
masses, but Fernandina Beach, Fla., is well known to those whodo their homework. According to VisitFlorida.com, the CondéNast Readers Choice Awards panel has noted that this destinationconsistently ranks among its Top 10 U.S. Islands. The surf is a popular draw with multiple beach access points,
including several with indoor shower and bathroom facilities. Adrive along Fletcher Avenue will take you to most of them and abeach pass allows you to drive your vehicle onto the beach in des-ignated areas. Main Beach includes playground facilities andplenty of nearby amenities.Fort Clinch State Park offers camping and hiking adventures
in addition to a beautiful shoreline. The fort is a great place to geta history lesson about the island while enjoying the natural beautyof the native flora and fauna. Entry and parking fees are requiredfor entry to the park.
A harbor greets boaters at the riverfront, where blocks of shopsand restaurants always seem bustling with activity. A popular stopis the Palace Saloon, the oldest business of its kind in the state. This perennial fixture has survived everything from fire to Pro-hibition and features original murals that are rooted in the area’shistory. The Palace is among several downtown bars and pubsoffer live music, in addition to restaurants that offer everythingfrom burgers to fine dining.Beach property rentals are plentiful or overnight visitors can
choose from an array of condos and hotel rooms, including thoselocated at the prestigious Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resortand the Ritz-Carlton. Golf courses and tennis courts are almostas popular as the beaches. For those who want to get out on the water, vendors offer para-
sailing, kayak excursions, water taxi tours, inshore and offshorefishing, scuba diving, jet skiing and just about anything else thatmakes use of the Intracoastal Waterway and Atlantic Ocean.Amelia Island offers a taste of Florida on a slightly smaller
scale, but you won’t miss the crowds or the traffic for one minute. For more information about activities or accommodations, call

Health and wellness. Thosetwo words I have come tolearn in the last four months
should be the most important words inyour vocabulary. I still operate underthe motto of if you see me running youbetter start running with me becausesomething scary must be chasing me.I am not discounting the males here,
but as women, we tend to take care ofeverything around us. We are usuallythe last resort and if our ship startssinking, everyone better grab a raft. Iam forever taking kids and dogs to thedoctor for checkups but somewhere Idon’t always follow through with my-self. I have learned a valuable lessonfrom all of this.I turned 43 this year and brought in
the New Year standing in the middle ofTimes Square in NYC with about a mil-lion of my closest friends in freezingtemperatures. I proclaimed that this wasgoing to be a GOOD YEAR and nothing was going to be likelast year and only good times ahead. I believed that until theweekend of my 43rd birthday in March when I had my boobsstart playing Hunger Games with me. I noticed a major changein them and thought this is just me being paranoid; it’s proba-bly nothing. Ladies, go with your gut. If you think it is some-thing, it most definitely will be.
I had a mammogram the first week of April and was told tocome back in a year everything was normal. I still thank Godevery day for doctors who knew I was anything but normal andgot me with an oncologist who pushed me in the right direc-tion. A week after my “normal” mammogram I found myselfsitting at The Hill Breast Center in Jacksonville, Fla., for whatI thought was going to be a repeat mammogram. A two-hourmammogram and ultrasound and eight biopsies later, I was sentfor a breast MRI. I kept waiting on the doctor to walk in andsay this is all a big mistake, you are just fine. That just wouldnot happen.I remember thinking this has got to be a bad dream and I am
going to wake up. One night sitting with my girlfriends, I said,“Well, guys, I guess I am going to be that one in four of us who
h a v et odea lwitht h epos-
sibility of breast can-cer.” I still did not know what was
about to hit me. The MRI results suddenlyhad me sitting in the surgeon’s office talkingabout taking most of my left breast off and aportion of my right and being monitoredevery three months to make sure I wouldhave no other issues. No one could guaranteeme that I would not have them.It was decided that a double mastectomy
would be the best choice for my health. AsI type the words, I still can’t believe that at43 years old that was a decision I had tomake. But I promise you it’s a decision Iwould make over and over again as it wasthe best thing I could do for my health andmy family.
Genetic testing and other issues arose and suddenly I am ina gynecologist’s office discussing the fact that I needed a totalhysterectomy. It was recommended for as soon as I could re-cover from the mastectomy, so within 60 days I had a doublemastectomy and a hysterectomy. This all from the girl who justnever thought it could happen to me and never made my healththe top priority. My columns are typically humor filled and always about not
taking life so serious that you don’t enjoy it. I still operate onthat but I want to use this one as an eye-opener that it can hap-pen to you and early prevention is the absolute best. If youdon’t feel something is right with your body, then pursue it.Put yourself first because you can’t take care of those aroundyou if you are sick.I am still that girl in the middle of Times Square saying this
is going to be the best year ever. It truly is because this is theyear that saved my life. “Carrie on,” my friends, and take careof YOU!
