Any warm-blooded nesting animal can visit or live on your property - and these animals will re-infest your property with their parasitic fleas. Tall grasses and weeds go to seed, providing an important food source for flea carrying rats, mice, squirrels and other grain feeding animals. The food chain continues on with fox, coyote, stray cats, etc. that feed on the smaller grain feeding rodents. All of the animals mentioned are usually found infested with fleas. (Don’t forget the Deer!) If stray pets or “nui-sance wildlife” persist, they can e a major source of fleas that will be tracked into your home. (Just because you do not have any pets does not mean that you can not get fleas inside your home either!)

W hat is the root cause of overpopulation, animal abuse and high rates of euthanasia across the country? Failure of pet owners to spay/neuter

their pets! Unbelievably, some people think they are “ruining their animal’s life” by preventing them to rampantly breed and produce litter after litter of puppies, kittens and other species, many destined to short miserable lives. Some people bemoan the high costs involved in being responsible pet owners, but what are the true costs in picking up, housing/ feeding unwanted pets and ultimately taking an innocent life–how do you measure that cost? Besides, if anyone is truly needy, they can contact local agencies that offer low cost spay/ neuter options that can help with costs. Most veterinarians will work with you on coming up with a payment plan to spread the cost over a period of time. Take the time and do the right thing. Allison Loiselle of SPCA of the Triad has written a great article on the importance of spaying and neutering your pet, which you can find on pages 8 and 9 of this issue. Because this is such an important issue, we would like to summarize the top

reasons for spaying and neutering. Overpopulation of companion animals tops the list. There are millions of unwanted dogs and cats in the United States which leads to overcrowded shelters and an extremely high rate of euthanasia in our country. In addition, sterilization of your cat or dog will increase his/her chance of a longer and healthier life by decreasing the occurrences of some cancers and by reducing some negative behavioral issues. We urge everyone to take the time to read this article because together we can make a difference. Our Ask the Vet column this month features Ronald J. Komich, DVM, of Greensboro Veterinary Hospital. The article discusses seizures in dogs and includes various reasons for seizures and what can be done to help. We hope you enjoy this issue of Triad Happy Tails. Not only will you find dogs and cats available for adoption, but there are two snakes, a couple of goats, horses, a love bird and even a beautiful rooster! (And he really is beautiful!) Once again, we’d like to thank our advertisers and our pet sponsors for all of your support. Thanks to you, more animals are finding homes.

Please spay or neuter your pet – that’s the mantra of professionals in the animal welfare field. We say it so many times to so many

people that we probably even say it in

our sleep! Why do we put such a strong emphasis on this? Do we want to stop the breeding of cats and dogs altogether? Of course we don’t. What we hope to achieve through widespread spaying and neutering is an end to thousands of

unplanned and unwanted puppies and kittens in our shelters and rescue groups. In one afternoon the SPCA of the Triad received calls from Guilford County residents asking for help with three separate litters, altogether a total of 28 puppies! In one afternoon! Three litters that could have been prevented if the parent dogs had been spayed or neutered. Twenty thousand animals annually - that is a conservative estimate of the number of dogs and cats brought to our community’s shelters and rescue groups every year. That is the tragedy we strive to avoid by advocating for spay/neuter and educating all people, everywhere, at every opportunity.

Change cannot occur until everyone is aware of the facts, as distressing as they may sound. The simple truth of the matter is that one unspayed cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 kittens in seven years! One unspayed dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in six years! This is why spaying or neutering even one pet – your own pet – can literally save the lives of thousands of other dogs and cats. Pet guardians or concerned individuals should also keep in mind the numerous medical and behavioral advantages that come along with spay/neuter when making the decision to have their pet spayed or neutered. Over 50% of unspayed or unneutered dogs and cats will end up with cancer of the reproductive organs, but by spaying or neutering your pet at an early age, the risks of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, testicular and prostate cancers are nearly eliminated! It’s a wonderful feeling to know that you are taking the necessary responsible steps to help prevent your pet from getting many forms of cancer. Additionally, spaying and neutering makes your pet’s life safer by reducing their hormone driven tendencies to run away from home, reducing the chances of becoming lost, hit by a car, or getting into fights with other animals. Especially in male dogs, neutering has the added

benefits of reducing aggressive hormone driven behaviors and the instinct to mark their territory. For nearly two decades the SPCA of the Triad has been actively assisting the community with affordable spay & neuter services. During the past 17 years, the SPCA opened and operated the first stationary spay/neuter facility in Guilford County and with the recent acquisition of a 32 foot long Gulfstream RV, will soon be providing mobile spay/neuter services to residents in the community. Our staff assists callers seven days a week with spay/neuter resources. They are present in the community throughout the year at fairs and public events, and are bringing the spay/neuter message to children in our schools. Currently the SPCA of the Triad operates a limited admission shelter, and is licensed to house approximately 60 animals and operate with a 5 person staff and dedicated volunteers that run two shifts, seven days a week. The SPCA of the Triad is also very fortunate to welcome our new veterinarian, Dr. Sara Fletcher, DVM who will be performing spay/neuter surgery onboard our mobile clinic. Dr. Fletcher has been a strong supporter of the SPCA for many years and a dedicated advocate of rescue animals. This is a very exciting time, as we are just beginning the retrofit of our mobile unit! The addition of mobile spay/neuter services to our community will significantly increase the number of animals and people we are able to reach. Campaigns to assist residents on fixed incomes, or suffering through a period of unemployment, with spay/neuter will have a tremendous effect on reducing the number of litters born throughout the upcoming warmer weather months.

The SPCA of the Triad is dedicated to alleviating animal suffering through all of our efforts, and providing spay/neuter solutions is simply the best preventative measure we can offer. The overpopulation crisis facing Guilford County did not happen overnight, and it won’t be fixed overnight, but it can get better. It will get better when we can come together as a community, make the conscious decision to take responsibility for our pets, and set a good example for our youth. In the world of animal welfare, in the struggle to end pet overpopulation, it truly does take a community. The SPCA of the Triad welcomes anyone interested in helping to spread the spay/neuter message to join our dedicated team. For more information on how you can help with our Mobile Spay/Neuter Program, or sponsoring a Spay or Neuter surgery for an animal in need, please contact the SPCA of the Triad at 336-375-3222 or visit us on the web at www.triadspca.org.

Animal Rescue & Foster ProgramPlease call to adopt us!

Oscar is a bundle of fun! This 11 lb. Japanese Chin has a personality you’re sure to fall in love with. Oscar greets every-one he meets with his tail wagging! He’ll even do the

“Chin Spin” when he’s excited, which is typical of the breed. Oscar likes to check out everything around him. When you are ready to relax on the couch though, Oscar is happy to nap beside you. Oscar and his buddy Olivia were rescued together from a puppy mill. Oscar and Olivia, like many adult dogs from puppy mills, were no longer wanted once they got older. Oscar is 9 years old and has charmed his foster parents and ARFP volunteers. He is house and crate trained, neutered and up-to-date with routine shots.

Call ARFP at 574-9600 if you would like to meet Oscar. !

Cassie is a domestic short haired cat that was born around 10/1/10. Life started off a little rough for her until she was brought to the Animal Rescue & Foster Program. She lost her mom and was nearly taken to a lo-cal animal shelter. Lucky for her, life is good now! Now Cassie’s days are filled with eat, sleep, play.

Are you looking for a girl like Cassie? Call 574-9600 for more details. !

Kent. Gray tabby and white Kent is just a kitten inside and out. He is sweet and loving but yet still loves to play. Watch out though, he is a leg rubber. Born sometime around 5/15/10, Kent came to us when he was found by a college student who didn’t

know what to do with him. He eventually met up with a kind hearted woman who found the Animal Rescue & Foster Program. She had named Kent after her ex-husband. He must have been a sweet man because this Kent sure is! We fixed him right up and he is good to go and looking for a really nice home to adopt him. Kent says he does not require a lot, just belly rubs and back rubs. We have explained to him that we would all love those things.

Call 574-9600 to find out how you can adopt Kent. !

Jack. What Jack would love more than anything, is to find a forever family for the Spring. You see, Jack and his siblings had a rough start to life. Their owner didn’t want them and was threatening to shoot them before an animal lover intervened.

She brought them to ARFP and now they are safe in a foster home! Jack is a happy boy who loves to play with his siblings. He requested his new family have lots of love to give and maybe even a few toys! Jack was born on 9/30/10.

To adopt Jack, call ARFP at 574-9600. !

Olivia could have easily been named Princess. Olivia loves to be carried around and will wag her tail constantly when she’s being held. She has the sweetest personality and is a very calm little girl. Olivia likes to curl up on the couch

with you or one of her doggie friends. She likes squeaky toys and can be a little shy at first, but after a few liver flavored treats she’s your new best friend! Olivia and her pal Oscar were rescued together from a puppy mill situation. Like many adult dogs from puppy mills, she was no longer wanted once she got older. Olivia is 7 years old and is looking for a family to treat her like the princess she is! She is house and crate trained, spayed and up-to-date on routine shots.

Contact ARFP at 574-9600 for more details. !

Zoey. Looking for 15 lbs of love and someone to cuddle with at night? Zoey is a fun loving terrier mix. She is doing excellent with her house training and crate training. Zoey gets along great with other dogs and cats, enjoys hiking, and does well walking on leash. It takes her a moment to warm up in new places with new faces;

however once she is warmed up she is very playful and loves to run around and explore. Need a buddy to snuggle with for nap time or bedtime? Zoey’s your girl! What Constitutes a Seizure in Dogs? Seizures in a dog can be a very frightening event for both the owner and their pet. A seizure is a neurological disorder that may be caused by multiple abnormalities, which must be sorted out. Diagnosing the cause of a seizure requires a thorough his-tory, a physical examination and lab testing (blood & urine).

What Causes Seizures in Dogs?

Frequent Causes of Seizures Include:– Head trauma - recent, usually within the previous few days.– Toxins – something ingested or applied, most often insecticide

products, chemicals (petroleum distillates, fertilizers, anti-freeze), certain mushrooms, etc.

– Neoplasia – brain tumors (may require MRI or CT scan to detect).

– Metabolic – liver (not detoxifying effectively), kidneys (not removing waste products effectively), low blood glucose (dia-betes), electrolyte imbalance, hemoconcentration (blood is too thick), or other internal abnormalities.

– Idiopathic Epilepsy – no apparent cause. Epilepsy is a diag-nosis that is backed into by eliminating other causes for the seizures.

Seizures are Generally Measured by Three Variables:– Intensity. Seizures can vary widely in intensity. A mild seizure

(petit mal) may show facial twitching or dog may act “spaced out”. Sometimes they appear to be snapping at flies that don’t exist or exhibit some other bizarre behavior. Then just as

quickly as it occurred, it is over and they are back to normal. On the other end of the spectrum, with more extreme seizure activity (grand mal) they are on their sides, often paddling their legs, salivating, with involuntary urination and/or defeca-tion and loss of consciousness.

– Duration. A seizure may last a few seconds to several minutes or longer. Grand mal seizures seem to last forever, but usually are one to three minutes in duration. It is helpful if you can actually time the seizure. After a seizure (the postictal phase) the pet is usually subdued and acts tired for several minutes to hours. A grand mal seizure is a strenuous event.

– Period between seizures. A seizure may be a one-time event, or they can come in a cluster, one seizure followed almost immediately by another. This cycle can go on for hours. Most often they start out once or twice a year and progressively become more frequent. Keeping a log of observed seizures is helpful, realizing that there may be some not observed.

What Can be Done for Seizures?

Treatment Depends on the Underlying Cause Listed Above

Epilepsy requires prescription medication that is usually life long and requires periodic monitoring and adjustments. The most common epileptic drugs prescribed are phenobarbital and potassium bromide, given individually or in combination. Both drugs are metabolized by the liver, and excreted through the kidneys, which must be monitored closely for toxicity. Often, owners of epileptic dogs eventually identify activities that will precipitate a seizure, such as excessive excitement, packing suitcases, visitors, or certain foods. Obviously these activities should be avoided. If your dog is seizing, try to get him/her on the floor where he cannot fall or hurt himself. Do NOT put your hand in his mouth; he will not swallow his tongue. Do not administer oral medica-tion during a seizure. Stay calm; seizures generally have no lasting, discernible effects. Once regulated, epileptic dogs usually lead a relatively nor-mal, happy life.

Daisy, our cocker spaniel, was only 9 months old when we decided to adopt Mitzi, a 7-year old white toy poodle. These two bonded quickly and were the best of friends for seven

years. Due to health issues, Mitzi’s last few years were very difficult. First, she lost her hearing and eventually lost her sight. We made that

dreaded decision in July of 2010 which left Daisy with-out her best friend she had grown up with. At the time, we thought we would adjust to a single-dog home. Fast forward a couple of months. . . we were in the waiting room at Village Vet in Oak Ridge and Daisy was be-ing her usual shy self. Afraid

of all the other dogs, she was cowering behind me. Then the front door opened and expecting an obnoxious intruder to invade her quiet corner, Daisy started to retreat further behind me. Suddenly, Daisy’s reverse gear shifted into full throttle forward! Walking through the doorway, ever so slowly, was a white senior toy poodle who looked strikingly like Mitzi. Her owner jokingly called her “Man-eater”. I realized Daisy thought her best friend had returned! After asking permission, I eased my restraint on Daisy’s leash and allowed her to introduce herself. Daisy’s tail was wagging 90 miles per hour, ears were perked, and she could not take her eyes off of Mitzi’s look-alike. Even when we went into the examination room, Daisy stretched the full length of her leash to be as close as possible to the door. She stood there gazing excitedly at “Man-eater”. As we left Dr. Taylor’s office that day, still choking back tears, I knew I had to find Daisy a new best friend. A few days later, while eating at Bill’s Pizza Pub in Oak Ridge, we picked up a copy of Triad Happy Tails Magazine. Our eyes and hearts were drawn to Lammy, a little white poodle who was up for adoption at Loving Pet Inn Adoptions, a local animal rescue organization in High Point. Lammy was six years old and was one of the “Rush Kennel” dogs before being rescued. We contacted Dara Lamberson at Loving Pet Inn Adoptions to find out more and eventually decided to adopt this little guy. After adopting him, we saw he did not respond well to the name “Lammy”. One day as he was acting silly - like a TV cartoon - I called, “Come here, Mickey Mouse!” And boy did he respond. We experi-mented several ways with the name Mickey and knew he had made the connection. Hence, Mickey had a new identity. There will never be another Mitzi, but Mickey has certainly found a place in our hearts and helped fill the void. The lesson to be learned: Listen to your pet. Their message is clear. It is not posted on Facebook, but rather on Heartbook.

Odie. I’m a 4-year old playful basset hound who’s never met a toy I didn’t like. Before CBHR rescued me, I was taken to the shelter because I was so sick and no one wanted to care for me. I was very, very thin. The CBHR vet finally figured out that I have a really sensitive tummy --

now that’s a challenge for someone who likes to eat! Now I eat a special food that I love and it doesn’t make me sick. I’ve gained a lot of weight, and am ready for my very own forever home. As long as you only feed me my special food and treats, I will be happy and healthy, and will love you for years to come. I love to run and play, and am friendly with kids and adults, and even cats! Will you be my forever buddy?

Gunny is a 1 year old super active puppy that is looking for a super active family to play with him! He’s house trained and loves to play but is a bit too rambunctious for younger children. He behaves nicely around larger dogs provided he is given ample time to get to know them. Gunny is a major cuddle bug who loves to snuggle. When he first ar-rived, he was extremely afraid of raised

hands. He’s still a little uncertain when people reach down for him, but his reactions are much less severe now. He’s a talkative little boy with a lot to say and has a very shrill howl. His foster family is work-ing with him on these behaviors. Gunny will do best with a fenced in yard and a family who has the patience to continue his training.

Gunny’s adoption fee is $350. Call 339-4368 for more details. !

Gail is a very cute, petite, sweet deaf boxer. She loves to be in general popula-tion in her foster home and does not like to go in her crate, but she tolerates it. You can expect her to be noisy for a little while after being crated and a deaf dog tends to be a little louder because they can’t hear how loud they are. Gail is house and crate trained and has shown excellent temper-ment. She responds well to come & sit with hand signals. Due to her deafness, we will

require either a permanant home with a dog that is social to Gail so that they can be her ears, or an adopter that

has experience with deaf dogs.

Gail’s adoption fee is $250. Visit www.FourSeasonsBoxerRescue.com

Charlie is a 2 1/2 year old male who is a little underweight at 77 pounds. He is ac-tive, friendly, and very handsome, as you can see. A typical young, affectionate Golden, he will need to work on manners, but he loves human attention and should be easy to

work with. He will be going to a foster home soon and we will post more about him on our website.

Visit www.tgrr.org for more information. !

Chap was adopted from a shelter just six weeks ago. He is un-derstandably shy, as dobers take their strength from positive relationships with their humans. In Chap’s case, he’s just a pup. Add to that his uncer-tain circumstances in the past weeks and months, and the uncertainty of

what lies ahead, and it’s no wonder he’s shy for now. Given the slightest opportunity, there’s every reason to expect that he’ll come into his own with even the slightest encourage-ment. His responsiveness to the DRT staff confirms that. So come by and take a look at this beauty. He’s house trained and good with other dogs. Understand that the biggest void in his life is probably one that has never been filled yet - that longing for a proper forever home.

Rusty is around six years old and was surrendered to a shelter after being chained up for his entire life. He’s been neutered, vac-cinated, microchipped and got to spend a day at the spa. Even guys like a nice warm bath and a shave! Rusty was a hit at the grooming salon. There wasn’t a dog there that he didn’t like. The groomers told us that he behaved beautifully in spite of the fact that it took them all day to get the mats out. He’s living with his

foster mom and dad who are working diligently to teach him to be an inside dog. He knows some basic commands and with consistent training and positive reinforcement he’ll be a gem.

Shaun had no tags on, but wore a collar that read “Bad to the Bone” when picked up as a stray. He was heartworm positive and more “Skin and Bones” than “Bad to the Bone.” Our volunteer took one look into his warm brown eyes and knew she had to save him. Probably around 5 years old, he’s a big boy and a quick learner. House broken, crate trained, good on leash, good with children (he is a little klutzy and may knock tiny ones

over), good with other dogs and with supervision, he’s ok with cats. He loves playing ball and being with his people. Shaun’s gained about 20 pounds and traded his old shabby coat for a soft, shiny coat. He’s received his heartworm treatments and is ready for his forever home.

Valentino is a young red-nosed pitbull, 1-2 yrs old, and weighs 58 lbs. He has a beautiful reddish-brown coat with a white chest and paws. Val came from Catawba Coun-ty Animal Services where he was a favorite with the staff who kept him for a month until he was rescued on 1/20/11. Valentino is very friendly and

likes to play with the female Labs in his foster home. He’s interested in the barn cats, too, but maybe to chase. He is working on his manners, and has learned sit, down and to walk well on a leash. He’s almost housebroken and is crate trained. Val is a sweet, affectionate boy and a loyal companion. He needs a daily run, but is also calm indoors. He goes to work with his foster mom and likes car rides.

Kagen is an 8 month old rough coat Parsons Jack Russell Terrier who was found as a stray in Chapel Hill. We were asked if we had room at the rescue for Kagen and gladly said yes. Kagen is friendly, on the low key side for a JRT and loves to be held. He is not a barker, nor is he a jumper. Kagen has been neutered, microchipped, is up to date on all of his shots and is heartworm nega-

tive. He seems to really love children and needs a family that can teach him how to play as we don’t think his former owner gave him any toys or dog treats because those items seem very foreign to him right now. Kagen is house, crate and leash trained.

Kagen’s adoption fee is $350. To give Kagen a great home contact Robin at 336-414-1373 or [email protected]. !

Cammie is a sweet girl that lives with her foster family and is 100% house trained. She will sit and stay when you throw the ball, ‘give’ when you ask and loves to be around

playing kids. Her daily walks to school to pick up the kids have turned her into a very laid back walker. She walks next to our lab and a stroller without any trouble. She is sharing our home with our 9 year old lab and our 2 girls who are 7 and 4 years old. She also has daily interactions with 2 boys who are 4 years old and 18 months. Everyone gets along wonder-fully! When the 18 month old needs a diaper change, Cammie is usually found lying right next to him, hoping for a belly rub!

It is time to pick a puppy from the litter and it is hard to decide. They are all so cute! In some cases, you have arrived and there are only two left in the litter. It is tempting

to say “Oh let’s take them both. They can keep each other company when we are at work.” Before making that deci-sion, it is a good idea to think of the work involved. Raising two puppies to become well-balanced adults is much harder than it ap-pears. It may not be a wise decision for either puppy. Let’s look at the consequences of raising two puppies together. The consequences apply not only to littermates, but any two young dogs raised simultaneously. They keep each other company: The critical developmental period for young dogs is between the ages of 8-14 weeks. They learn to explore the world and develop skills needed to handle unfamil-iar situations. They learn proper social skills including greeting skills and “doggy etiquette” from older, more mature dogs. When puppies are raised together and are not exposed to the world separately, their desire to investigate new situations is stunted. One puppy is always the bolder of the two, and will do most of the inves-tigating. The shyer puppy will hang back. They may have little desire to explore new things. After all, they have each other to play with and in their eyes, that is all they need. Double the puppies...double the love for me: Two puppies that spend all of

their time together will bond closely with each other, and will have a difficult time bonding with the owner. This is not what is important to them. They want each other. When their bond deepens, spending any

time at all without the other present will stress them. Such activities including, going to the vet, taking them on separate walks, or leaving them in separate areas will be taxing. They will have no idea how to act on their own and this will be scary for both. Sibling Rivalry: As the puppies mature, it is not uncommon for aggression issues to appear. It is natural for them to compete over the same resources such as food, toys, space and even your attention. The aggres-sion may become severe and rehoming one of the dogs may be necessary. It can be done!: With time, patience, love and the help of a well-qualified trainer, adding puppies to a house can be an enjoy-able experience. Both puppies can live a

well-balanced life. However, it is twice the work. Every aspect of puppy rearing must be done individually, without the other sibling present. They must be crated sepa-rately, preferably in separate rooms. They must go on outings individually. It is best if they attend training classes individu-

ally. They must both have individual bonding time with the owners,

including one-on-one play ses-sions. Play time where both

puppies are present should be supervised and on a limited basis. As they grow older, the time they spend separately

can decrease. By the time they are a year old, they will

have bonded with the owner. They will have developed their

own personality to the fullest and can fully enjoy time spent with the owner, as well as each other.

Tara. Born around January 2007, Tara is an attractive 7-1/2 lb. short haired, rumpy riser Manx. She’s a true blue and white tuxedo. She arrived with a serious bladder infection which was treated and is now gone. She does still eat a

Friskies special diet with supple-ments, just to make sure that she doesn’t develop a problem again. It also keeps her from having constipation problems, something not unusual with rumpy risers. Tara is good with most cats, but would probably do OK as an only cat also. She’s very much a lap cat, and will cuddle with you while you watch TV. Tara is vaccinated, vetted, wormed, spayed, microchipped, and FeLV/ FIV negative.

Max. I am a 2 year old handsome fella. They tell me I’m a registered, full blooded German Shepherd. I just think I’m a good boy with basic obedience manners. I am not able to make any puppies and I am up to date on my vaccines. I am healthy and handsome and good in the house too! I like kids a lot and I like to play with other dogs too. My foster mom

thinks I get a little too excited around cats, they look like so much fun! My former owner had to take a job and traveled too much, so I was surrendered out of love. If you have room for a love bug in your life, it would be nice to meet you. I’m healthy and love to play so I need a fenced in yard.

Siera is an absolutely stunning, 8 year old, 14.2 hand, pinto mare. She is a companion only because a former owner did not care for a wound to her fetlock which caused her to wreck her stifle. The fetlock is not painful to her at all but the stifle limits her. She must only go to a home where the pasture is somewhat level and her companion

should be a quiet horse or pony so she doesn’t do a lot of running. She is on supplements for her stifle and is a happy, fun-loving girl. She has an amazing personality and will win your heart with her silly antics.

Last fall I ran across an article in the newspaper explaining how animal shelters are overrun with rabbits in August and September because people tend to buy them for Easter gifts, then the nov-elty wears off and the rabbits end up abandoned

in animal shelters. My original plan was to go to the shelter and make a dona-tion. I made it to the Guilford County Animal Shelter, but never got around to the donation part. It was very busy at the shelter that day, so I looked around at the cages they had placed in the waiting area while I waited to talk to someone. In the corner, was a crazy haired rabbit, which was like no creature I had ever seen. It was love at first sight, a seven dollar and fifty cent adoption fee later, he was mine. I really had no idea how to care for a rabbit, so I spent the next week surf-ing the internet doing research. In the meantime, the rabbit and I stared at each other a lot. He was so unusual with his wild hair that went everywhere. I spent the next week texting and posting pictures of him on my Facebook page, and then I had an idea. What if I could help other rabbits that were still at the shelter? What if I gave him a Facebook page to help spread awareness of the different types of animals that end up in shelters? I cre-ated an account for him, “Flopsy Parker”, even dressed him up in little costumes for his profile pictures. My husband and a lot of my friends thought I was insane when I told them what I was doing. My rabbit is unique looking so he got a lot of attention and comments over the next few months. I started with just a few Facebook friends, and then those friends shared his mission with their friends. A few friends became 450 in a matter of a

few months. I began to post pictures of other rabbits available for adoption and make awareness posters with a message that rabbits are a ten-year-plus commitment when you decide to adopt one. Rabbits might be fluffy and cute, but they require a lot

of care. They have to have their nails trimmed, be brushed and also have spe-cific dietary needs. They need patience and someone willing to spend time working with them. Rabbits can even be litter trained. I wanted everyone to be aware of the responsibilities that go along with adopting or buying a rabbit. I have worked with Flopsy to the point he can now hang out with our cats and dog if they are supervised. It was not an easy task, but I truly believe with love and patience you can teach animals anything. People ask me all the time how they can help without adopting. I tell them there are lots of rabbits sitting in rescue groups and shelters waiting for sponsors

to help with their adoption fees. People can contact their local shelters for more information on sponsoring adoption fees. Food and other supplies can also be donated; farm and feed stores carry 25 pound bags of rabbit pellets for less than $10. An impulsive moment of adoption had turned into so much more for me. A seven dollar and fifty cent rabbit taught me to be a better person. Flopsy has a magic about him - I saw it the first time I laid eyes on him in the lobby of the shelter. Easter is around the corner, and I am on a mission to spread awareness before people buy rabbits as Easter gifts. It is not fair to the “Flopsys” of the world - that they might be aban-doned simply because people do not research the responsibili-ties involved in caring for a rabbit, or just because they simply grow up.
