Locating an emergency BARRYTON — In anemergency situation, every second is critical. When first
responders can not find alocation, however, thoseseconds can quickly become amatter of life or death. Localofficials and business leadersaddressed this issue at a9-1-1 meeting with MeceolaConsolidated Central Dispatch Authority Director LaurieSmalla on Wednesday inBarryton. Smalla spoke aboutthe importance of properly
displaying addresses on businesses and homes. She said when 9-1-1 dispatchers sendpolice, EMS or fire respondersto a situation, the protocol isto only give an address. “Youonly need to see an ambulancedrive past you to realizehow important it is (to postan address),” Smalla said.“Everything we do is based onan address.” The meeting wasprompted after an incident at
Hanson’s BP Party Store three weeks ago. A young man cameinto the store to get a donutfor his grandmother, sayingthat she was a diabetic andneeded to raise blood sugar.Store owner Greg Hansonnoticed that the older woman was slumped over in the seat of the car. He immediately dialed9-1-1 and ran to give her orange juice in an attempt to raise her blood sugar levels. “She was
almost unresponsive by thetime I got to her,” Hanson said.“It’s an alarming thing to havehappen.” The 9-1-1 operator was diligent in instructingHanson on what to do whilehe waited for first responders. However, when he heard thesirens coming, he saw that they passed by his store a few times before finally pulling into thegas station. First responders
and EMS were able to revivethe woman. Before the EMSleft, Hanson was nailinghis address numbers to his building. “It’s a little bit of a wake-up call,” he said. “I think at the very least it should bea business effort to put the(address) numbers up.” During Wednesday’s meeting, Smallarecommended putting thenumbers next to the door, facing the roadway in a clearly
visible spot that is free of any obstructions such as shrubs, bushes or trees. She said
the best signs are reflective, fluorescent green signs with white lettering. These signs can be purchased at a wide variety
of local businesses. “Themost important thing is tomake sure your addressesare posted,” Smalla said. “Wetake calls everyday wherepeople say, ‘They know where we’re at.’” Barryton businessowners agreed that, in town, most businesses do not haveaddresses posted. “We takeit for granted that everyoneknows where (our businesses
are at),” said Penny Huffman, owner of Penny WashLaundromat. However,Hanson thinks that in additionto giving an address, firstresponders should be given thename of a location, particularly if a situation happens at a business. “In a town like(Barryton), everyone is going toknow exactly where we are,” hesaid.
New Law Makes It Easierto Save on PrescriptionCosts(NewsUSA) - Making endsmeet shouldn’t mean going without your medications. If you have limited income andresources, Medicare’s “ExtraHelp” program sets it up so youcan pay no more than $2.50 foreach generic drug and $6.30for each brand-name drug. The Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services estimatesthat “Extra Help” can saveparticipating seniors as muchas $3,900 per year. Now it’seven easier to qualify for “ExtraHelp” from Medicare. A new law changed how your incomeand assets are counted in2010: * Life insurance policiesdon’t count as resources. *Help you get from relatives, friends and others to pay for
property expenses -- like food, mortgage, rent, heating fuelor gas, electricity, water andproperty taxes -- does notcount as income. Many PeopleQualify and Don’t Even Know It These changes mean thatmore people than ever will now qualify for “Extra Help.” Evenif you were turned down for“Extra Help” before, you shouldreapply. If you qualify, you’llget help paying for Medicare
prescription drug coveragepremiums, copayments anddeductibles. To qualify, you
must make less than $16,245a year (or $21,855 for marriedcouples). Even if your incomeis higher, you may still be able
to get some extra help. Yourresources must also be limitedto $12,510 (or $25,010 formarried couples). Resourcesinclude bank accounts, stocksand bonds, but not your houseor car. There Is No Costor Obligation to Apply It’seasy and free to apply for“Extra Help.” You or a family member, trusted counseloror caregiver can apply online

Tips for Stress-Free AirTravel(NewsUSA) - Man-made andnatural disruptions to airtravel are all-too-often thenorm. Not only can weatherdelay take-offs and landings, but new airline rules can alsokeep planes grounded. Forexample, if a plane is sitting
on the tarmac for more thanthree hours, it has to returnto the gate. On the upside, there are ways to cope withthe unexpected. Here are afew simple tips to prepare fordelays before leaving home: *Print copies of itineraries withthe 800 numbers for yourairline, and others that fly the same route, just in case you have to rebook from the
airport. The paper-free option?E-mail those numbers orenter them manually into yoursmartphone. * Check airline Web sites for delay postings.New rules mandate thatairlines have this informationonline. Alternatively, you cango to www.flightstats.com. *Make sure you can access youroffice and home computers inthe event you are stuck whiletraveling. Free and inexpensive
programs like LogMeIn (www.LogMeIn.com) make it quick, easy and secure to access files,
calendars and applicationsfrom any computer, smartphone, netbook or iPad with an Internet connection. *
Enlist a friend or family member who knows their way around online travel sites, andkeep them on your mobilephone speed dial. If you haveto make alternative plans, they can probably do it faster thananyone. * Remember travelinsurance. A few extra dollarstacked onto the price of yourtrip can provide peace of mindif you have to change plans
for unforeseen reasons. Check what your airline, travel agent, booking site and credit cardsoffer to make sure that you’recovered. * Have fun. Many airports are adding luxurieslike spas, high-end restaurantsand even showers to keeppassengers happy. Find out what your airport, and the onesthat you will visit, offer before you go, so you’re able to enjoy them to the fullest. While
there is no surefire guaranteefor disruption-free air travel, alittle advanced planning can goa long way -- even all the way to your destination.
