In the years to come, anuntold number of familiesand their trusty companionswill come to frolic in the sandand water at the dog run atBuntzen Lake. When they get tired, or just

want to get away to the shadefor a few moments, theylllikely take a seat on a bench.

Though the seat may offerjust a brief respite from thewalk or a moment to pon-der the view of the water, one bench will always be apermanent reminder of RollieWebb. On Friday, a bench dedicat-

ed to the former CoquitlamSearch and Rescue memberwas installed at the park

beneath a maple tree, withhis two children, Ethan andAbbie, on hand to watch.Im gladwe have this place

of peace where we can comethink about past memoriesand think about the futurewithout forgetting, TraceyFenton, Webbs ex-wife, toldthe Tri-Cities NOW.

While the postman comesrain, snow or sunshine, eightadventurers are travelling1,400 km up the Fraser Riverby canoe, raft, van and onfoot. No weather will stopthem, no hotel will housethem, no NASA-quality pil-lows await to rest their wearyheads on.It will be nothing but the

great outdoors and a month-long trip to learn as much asthey can about watersheds, salmon, resource manage-ment and how to lower theirecological footprint. This is the Sustainable

Living Leadership Programput on by the RivershedSociety of BC, a Port Moody-based organization dedicatedto conserving, protecting andrestoring the health of B.C.sriversheds.

It is the experience of alifetime, the groups websitestates. One such adventurer

is Christian Krushel, aCoquitlam man on his firstreal wilderness trek outsidethe city. But what he lacks inexperience now he hopes togarner through this trip. One thing I hope to

accomplish is to becomemore aware of the effect ofwhat I and others have onthe communities that are sodependent on water sourcessuch as the Fraser, he toldthe Tri-Cities NOW.You always hear on T.V.

and the radio and whatnotabout how we need to helpthe environment, but I thinkthat going on this trip willreally help me and othersrealize first-hand what wecan do to help.Krushel jumped through

hoops and climbed laddersto get his application in andaccepted no easy task con-sidering the guidelines. The Rivershed Society

requiresacover letterexplain-ing the applicants leadershipqualities, volunteer hist-ory and why the program isright for them; a resume; asustainability project ideapitch describing a real, feas-ible goal the applicant has inmind focusing on helping theFraser River; and a $1,500registration fee.Its easy to say you need to

be devoted. But its well worth jumping

the hurdles for the payout, according to Krushel.First of all, Ill meet new

people on the trip, so Ill betaking away somenew friend-ships, he said. Secondly Iam going to take away newinformation and first-handexperiences about the waycommunities operate andhow wildlife co-exists withour huge presence. Ill takeaway a whole new look onthewayweaffect the environ-ment around us and our landas a whole. One thing I dontwant to take away is a sun-burn.Krushels project is simple:

he plans to implement a foodcomposting program at hischurch and, once established, spread this idea to otherchurches and organizationsthat host events with food. Its in line with the

Rivershed Societys goalsand above all its doable, andjudging from past partici-pants the program does helpthem do it.Just ask Coquitlams Caitlin

Hill, a 2012 participant whocompleted the three-weekjourney from Williams Laketo Vancouver.Hill works for the Pacific
