TIDBITS® RIDES A

ROLLER COASTERby Janet Spencer

A team of seven people went to California in order to set the world record for the most roller coasters ridden in 24 hours. The group rode on 40 different roller coasters at eight different amusement parks in California, starting at 5:00 p.m. on October 14, 2000 and ending at 5:00 p.m. the next day. Come along with Tidbits as we ride the world’s tallest coaster!• From the days of the first roller coaster ride to

today, a competition to build the tallest, longest, scariest roller coaster on earth has pushed the industry forward into new realms. In 2004, this competition spurred Six Flags Great Adventure theme park in New Jersey to announce that they were building the highest and fastest roller coaster on earth. They named it Kingda Ka, after the 535-pound Bengal tiger who resides at the park, although some people joke that “Kingda Ka” is actually Swahili for “OhMyGawd what a ride!”

• In 2005, Kingda Ka opened for business, claiming the title of both the fastest and the tallest roller coaster on the planet. The coaster cars rocket to the top of a 456-foot tower, accelerating from 0 to 128 mph within 3.5 seconds, before a stomach-clenching cork-screw drop back down to earth. ◆ When you’re in a hurry, dry erase markers and permanent markers sometimes look the same. Ever grabbed a marker to write a note on a dry-erase white board and found that it wouldn’t wipe off? To remove permanent marker from a white board, try using a pencil eraser. Rub lightly on the marker areas only, working from the outside in. It should come off.

◆ Rusty bicycle handles can be unsightly and a pain. Make a paste of salt and lemon juice (3 parts salt, 1 part lemon juice), and use it to rub the rust away with a dry cloth.

◆ What will you do with all that candy from trick-or-treating? Make your holiday cookie plans now, and you can freeze some for later baking use.

◆ “If you have magazines or books you have finished reading, perhaps you’d consider donating them to local seniors centers. Look in the yellow pages to see if there are any near you. Often, the seniors are grateful to have new reading material.” -- T.C. in Florida

◆ Many more of us nowadays are using reusable fabric shopping bags. A few cities have banned the use of plastic bags for retail shops. These fabric bags are much better for the environment, and can hold a lot more groceries per bag. One thing many people forget to do is wash them. You can take out the plastic insert (if there is one) and toss the bags in the washing machine. Hang to dry, and you’ll be carrying around a much cleaner bag!

KINGDA KA (continued):• The secret to Kingda Ka’s thrill is all in the

launch sequence. Whereas standard older roller coasters employ a cable system which slowly and laboriously winches a car to the top of a hill, the Kingda Ka uses space-age hydraulic engineering to launch a car in exactly the same sort of way an aircraft is launched from an aircraft carrier, with similar thrust and G-forces involved. The system is basically a high tech catapult, with a giant hydraulic launch system delivering 12,500 horsepower in a single colossal blast – twelve times the horse power of a Formula One race car. Eight military grade 500-horsepower hydraulic motors – which took a year to construct – charge up the accumulators, forcing hydraulic fluid into the chambers under great pressure. When a trigger is pulled, the pressure is released and the car is launched at rocket speed. It’s similar in many ways to blowing up a balloon and then letting it go. Kingda Ka is one of only two roller coasters in the world that uses this technology. The experience has been compared to being in a jet fighter, or being a drag racer.

QUICK BITS• It takes only ten seconds to go from launch to

being 456 feet in the air on top of the tower.• The highest point of the ride is 45 stories

tall, which is about 4/5ths the height of the Washington Monument. It’s tall enough that the entire Statue of Liberty would fit under the main arch with 100 feet to spare.

• On foggy days, you can’t see the top of the tower from the bottom.

• The ride cost $25 million to construct.• The entire track is just over 1,000 yards long.• Fittingly enough, the very first passengers

were the engineers who built it.

KINGDA KA (continued):• The braking system, done with magnetic fields

generated by 473 magnets, means there’s no friction to wear parts out. It’s silent, efficient, and fail-safe.

• The roller coaster has four cars, and each car seats 18 passengers. About 1,400 people per hour take the ride.

BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSESo where should you sit to get the best ride? Depends

on what you’re looking for. Sitting in the very back of a coaster train yields the wildest ride since the last car is being pulled by the weight of the front cars, making for some nice whipping action, especially if they are long trains on steep hills. However, sitting in the front has benefits too. The very first car will hang over the first drop waiting for the rest of the cars to crest the hill before the big plunge. Front cars also have better low-G moments when the train is going over the top of low hill, leading to better stomach-lifting airtime. The ride is usually smoothest in the middle of the train, a good spot for beginners.

SAFETY CONCERNS• Two weeks after the grand opening, a bolt

unexpectedly sheered off, damaging the brake system. Custom-made bolts were ordered and installed to fix the problem and prevent it from happening again.

• In 2009, the roller coaster was struck by lighting in the middle of the night when the park was closed. It suffered serious damage and was closed for repairs.

• Because it is so close to the Jersey Shore, the coaster is capable of withstanding hurricane force winds. Nevertheless, damage occurred during Hurricane Irene in 2011, and the ride was closed for repairs once again.

◆ It was 20th-century American author and actress Cornelia Otis Skinner who made the following sage observation: “One learns in life to keep silent and draw one’s own confusions.”

◆ If you grew up during a certain era in the United States, you are probably familiar with the board game Parcheesi. If you have a particularly good memory, you may recall that the game’s subtitle is “The Royal Game of India.” You may not realize, though, that the game is so-called because royalty in India used to play a life-size version of the game in gardens specially designed for the pursuit. Centuries ago, rajas would dress members of their harems in brightly colored costumes and use them as game pieces.

◆ Everyone knows that a sophomore is someone in his or her second year of high school or college. Most people don’t realize, though, that the word is derived from the Greek words “sophos,” which means “wise,” and “moros,” which means “stupid.”

◆ It’s not unusual for music critics and the artists they critique to butt heads, but they usually do it in print, not in person. In 1978, though, the staff of Rolling Stone magazine and the band the Eagles went head-to-head in a softball match. The writers ended up losing to the rock stars.

◆ The creator of the ubiquitous smiley face earned a grand total of $45 for his creative effort.

◆ Having trouble with your teenager? It’s a worldwide problem, it seems -- though not always for the same reasons. In 2004, a 13-year-old boy in India ran away from home, declared that he was a Hindu holy man and founded a monastery. His parents arranged for him to be kidnapped and brought back home.

The first candidate is Marlowe. He is poofy. He is puffy. He is handsome! Marlowe was originally brought in as a stray to

another shelter and wasn’t shy about sharing his displeasure about finding himself there. His grumpiness led to his transfer to us and when he first joined us, he made sure we understood exactly how much this sucked for him. But we weren’t about to give into his hissy fits

easily… we’ve seen his kind before… we know their tricks! As suspected, Marlowe just needed a bit of time and space. With time and patience, his “It’s-your-fault-I-am-here!” attitude slowly gave way to “OK… so you feed me and give me a clean, warm place to hang out… perhaps you are tolerable”. Marlowe’s latest feelings seem to be “You guys n’ gals aren’t as monstrous as I originally thought.?”. Marlowe still wants to interact on his terms and will require a cat-savvy person but Marlowe seems to have

given up his Mr. Cranky Pants persona in favour of a kinder, gentler Mr. Bring Me My Treats.

Our second Fluffy Feline for your consideration is Butch. Not only is this boy about as handsome as they come, he is sweet, mellow and smart to bout! While Butch has been adorned with so many fine feline qualities, one thing prevents the other cats from becoming jealous and making snide remarks about his imaginary thick ankles… Butch has tested positive for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). While this compromises his immune system, it isn’t nearly as scary as it sounds! It is not contagious to any other species except and many positive cats can live long, healthy lives. So come down and meet Mr. Fluffy Pants… chat with us about FIV and our Permanent Foster Program.

Q: I can’t remember which cable network it was on, but I really liked a series with female stand-up comedians hosted by the red-haired actress from “The Office.” Can you tell me what network it was on and whether it will return for another season? A: You are thinking of the TV Guide Network’s original comedy series “StandUp in Stilettos,” which is hosted by Kate Flannery. I am happy to report that it will be back for a second season beginning Saturday, Nov. 10, at 11 p.m. ET/PT. As you

know, the show features three stand-up comedians per episode, and this season’s scheduled guests include Thea Vidale, Cory Kahaney, Cathy Ladman, Luenell and Laurie Kilmartin.

***Q: I remembered reading a while back that they were bringing back the sketch-comedy show “In Living Color.” Is that true? A: I spoke with Kali Hawk -- who co-stars as Shelby on Fox’s “New Girl” and also stars in the “In Living Color” reboot -- and she’s not sure when it will air either, although she assures me that they shot the pilot episode/special, and it’s hilarious.“We taped the special, and it was going to be a two-part special to air sometime in the fall,” Kali said. “But I haven’t been told what’s going to happen with it, whether it’s going to air or when, or if it’s not going to

air at all. I really don’t know. It’s just crazy because people ask me about it so often. There’s so much excitement about that show, but I don’t have any details that I can give out.”Working with the show’s creator and first-rate comedian Keenan Ivory Wayans was a highlight for Kali. “It was definitely fun working with Keenan. The man is a legend. The characters from the original installment are still so relevant today. It was really neat to get to work with somebody who created something like that, something that has such long-lasting appeal.”

***Q: I am a fan the show “The Finder.” What will happen now that Michael Clarke Duncan has passed away? A: Fox announced in May that it would not be renewing the freshman series,

which aired as a midseason show from January through May 2012. The death of “Finder” co-star Michael Clarke Duncan, 54 -- who passed away in September from complications after suffering a heart attack in July -- had nothing to do with the show’s cancellation. Michael completed three movies before his death: “The Sibling,” “The Challenger” and “In the Hive,” which will be released posthumously.

***Q: Could you please tell me if “Body of Proof ” was canceled? A: The Dana Delany-starring medical-mystery drama will be back for a 13-episode third season on ABC come midseason -- which most likely means January or February 2013, although no official premiere date has been provided as of this writing.

Spooktacular Halloween fun for pets(NC)—Halloween isn’t just for kids. Pets are joining the festivities too by dressing up in fabulous costumes. For the upcoming Halloween season, here are tips on how to dress your pet for spooktackular success, and keep them safe and happy during the celebration.

Devilishly Cute Dress Up

Before you begin shopping for your pets’ Halloween costume, here’s a rundown of some of this year’s cutest options:

• Top Trends: some pet parents like to outfit their pets in the same looks that are popular amongst adults and kids. This year, pet’s costumes run the gamut from superheroes such as Spiderman and Wonder Woman, to rock stars like Bret Michaels and childhood favourites like the sock monkey.

• Something for everyone: combining style, quality and fun, you can style your pet with looks from Martha Stewart Pets, Marvel Comics and the Bret Michaels Pets Rock, which can be found at PetSmart. Each collection includes adorable options such as Wonder Woman, Superman, an enchanting dragon, spooky spider, devilishly cute skeleton and a classic bumblebee costume.

• Cool cats: Cats can join the fun with adorable character hats, like the jester and princess.

• Time to shine: Show off your pet at PetSmart’s annual Howl-O-Ween pet parade on October 20 at your local store or in the online Monster Cute photo contest powered by Greenies at www.facebook.com/PetSmart from September 10 through October 24.

Costumes, toys and more ideas for Halloween fun for your pet can be found at PetSmart or www.petsmart.com.
