daffodil walk
We were so lucky with the weather for our ‘Daffodil Walk’. After so
many drab weeks with really cold easterly winds we got a lovely sunny day with the wind in the west.
Although the daffodils had not come out according to plan we had a really lovely afternoon with many people enjoying afternoon tea on the lawn and loggia at the hall.
Thank you to everyone who came along, we really were pleased to see so many people; the only problem was the boiler could not keep up with the demand for tea!
We also have to say a huge “thank you” to Mr and Mrs Morris for the use of their lovely home and gardens, without which this could not have been possible.
The result of our efforts was a much-needed boost of over £500 toward the maintenance of our lovely little church, thanks to you all.
Winners of the treasure hunt were Mr and Mrs F Harris of Fenton and Miss Laura Kitchenson of Marton, and the bowls was won by Mr David Farrow of Kexby.

Well done to a group of swimmers from the Trentside region
who took place in the Rotary Club Swimarathon raising money for the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. In total the team raised £675. The Swimarathon last year raised over £5000 which they expect to beat this year and money continues to pour in from all those that took part from the Lincoln area.
The Swimarathon is an annual event and next year we are hoping for more swimmers to help raise more money for important local causes.
Further information on next years' event will be published in Trentside Links once available.

As readers will be aware from the scaffolding around the tower of St
Peter's, work is ongoing and presently concentrating on renewing/replacing the old rotten timberwork.
We are however pleased to announce that the PCC has won a £2000 grant towards the repairs from Lincolnshire Churches Trust and we are very grateful to them for their support. We hope by the next edition of Trentside Links that the works will be substantially completed and that things are getting back to normal. Lincolnshire Group of The Hardy Plant SocietyHave YOU heard of the Hardy Plant
Society? The HPS is a charity that informs and inspires lovers of plants and gardens. It is an international society and was formed in 1957 by a group of eminent gardeners and nurserymen. The founding four were Alan Bloom, Arthur Hellyer, Will Ingerson and John Sambrook. Our current President is Roy Lancaster, OBE, who has supported the society for decades. The aim of the HPS is to give its members information about the wealth of both well known and little known perennials and to ensure that all worthy plants remain in cultivation and have the widest possible distribution. There are over 40 friendly local groups across the UK and the Lincolnshire group, formed in 1989, hold their lively meetings at the William Farr Church of England School, Lincoln Road, Welton, LN2 3JB. There is ample parking on-site. The school is accessible by wheelchair. Members travel here from all over the county - from the Wash to the Humber and come from Doncaster and Nottinghamshire too. All levels of gardeners, of any age, are very welcome. In fact, anyone with enthusiasm and a love of gardening. Gardeners enjoy meeting other gardeners and it is a very good way of making friends. Our aim is to encourage young members who will, of course, be our future. And, after all age is only a number whether we are young or slightly older! Visitors and new members will receive a warm welcome and the opportunity to share ideas and information in a convivial environment. We have seven speakers annually: in January (after our AGM), February, March, April, September, October, November and a plant sale (everyone welcome) in May; with a host of activities during the summer months. Our talks are diverse and afterwards we adjourn for a welcome cup of tea/coffee and biscuits. Members plant sales at most meetings.

A couple of issues ago of the Trentside Links I wrote and explained what
the Church Council at St Peter’s and St Paul’s Kettlethorpe were proposing to do with the bells and the clock in the tower. Things are progressing and we are now trying to obtain grants from various grant-giving bodies.
I write to ask for your help. If anyone feels very strongly either way about the work that is proposed, I would be grateful to hear from you in writing to:
Rev Stephanie Prosser,69 Mill Lane, Saxilby LN1 2HN.
If anyone has any suggestions to whom we could approach for a grant I would be very grateful to hear from you.
If all goes well and we can raise the money it is possible that the work will be done in the summer of 2014. I promise to keep you in touch with the situation.
Thank you for your help.

In rainy weather, visiting the Kettlethorpe church of St Peter and
St Paul was something of a problem.....churchgoers tiptoed through puddles, shoes were muddied, bridal gowns had to be carefully hoisted, but due to financial cuts there was no cash available for any remedial work to be carried out.
But all that has changed.....
Thanks to the help given by GTM KV, the main contractors working on the new water treatment plant at Newton on Trent, these difficulties are a thing of the past.
GTM KV were asked by Kettlethorpe Parish Council if they were able to help and shortly afterwards assistant project manager, Alexa Fernand, came along on a typical winter’s day to see the problem first-hand.
After chatting with members of the council, it was just a matter of days before shuttering strips were provided, several tons of hardcore were tipped and rolled, marker posts were erected to protect the
grass and in no time at all, the job was done. Kettlethorpe church forecourt had a clean, flat car-parking space, ready to welcome its first visitors, happy in the knowledge that their mud-spattered clothing will be a thing of the past.

It was hard to get into Willingham village hall one evening at the end
of March. No - it was not a show or scholarly talk, it was an unusual and spontaneous party, a mixture of thanks and farewell for the doctor who was leaving after 28 years of working in several local surgeries.
On the stage were tributes large and small, among them a full patio set and gold watch. Good refreshments were available as the doctor mingled with everyone who wanted to say goodbye.
She is not retiring from medicine, and may well be seen by those who have occasion to visit Lincoln or John Coupland Hospital for certain treatments.

aircraft made in Lincoln
A recent talk given by Charles Parker to the Sturton & Stow Historical
Society was both enlightening and entertaining in so many ways.
Increasingly as we read and hear about the current demise of Britain's manufacturing industry it may come as a surprise to those people who are not local, or who have moved to the area fairly recently, that at the time of WWI Lincoln was one of the largest aircraft production centres in the world. Yes, the world! Approximately 6,000 men and women were engaged in 'war service' on aircraft work in the city.
Names synonymous with the city in the past such as Ruston, Procter & Co, Robey & Co, Clayton & Shuttleworth Limited, all played an enormous part during that 1914-18 war.
Charles provided us with so much information supported by wonderful archive photographs I can't replicate the talk to its advantage really but to give you a flavour I shall try and put down the main points.
I am sure most of you have heard the name of Ruston in connection with the city - and to be exact Joseph Ruston who was one of the first entrepreneurs of his day. It was in 1857 that he became a partner in a small Lincoln millwrights’ business of Burton & Procter. Joseph's marketing abilities were ahead of the time and he began building machines
to stock instead of acting upon order requests. By doing this he increased his market because customers didn't have to wait so long for their particular piece of equipment and so they in turn spoke to their neighbours and friends, and hence the order books began to fill up.
The company soon became Ruston, Procter & Co Limited and expanded rapidly. In 1914 the works covered 100 acres and had over 5,000 employees. This expansion was just in time for the outbreak of war and they were the first company to venture into aircraft production in response to a call from the government. All companies who took on orders for the government became 'controlled establishments' a kind of semi-nationalised company for the war effort.
With a lot of young men rushing off to join up this depleted the workforce considerably. However this problem was solved in two ways, the government stopped the recruitment of skilled labour and women were taken on to do a lot of the 'mundane' work. The idea of women working in these factories was initially fiercely opposed by the trade unions so the government came up with what we would today call PR thinking. These women were called 'munitionettes' - a play on the word 'suffragette' to give the women an idea that they were meeting an important role in the war - which we now know they actually did! It also meant the

men still felt in charge because they were only allowing the women to tackle the more mundane jobs!
In 1915, only one year into the war, there was an issue - 'The Shell Crisis', a shortage of artillery shells on the front lines and David Lloyd George was put in charge of the new government department of the Ministry of Munitions. The Shell Crisis was a significant factor in the fall of the Liberal Government of the day, in favour of a coalition, and also in the rapid rise to power of the new Minister of Munitions, Lloyd George, who would replace Asquith as Prime Minister the following year.
Lloyd George recognised you had to get the best people in the best positions and he went out into the country to find these 'best' companies and came to Lincoln. He is quoted as saying “This is an engineers’ war”.

early in 1915 became the second Lincoln firm to go into aircraft manufacture closely followed by Clayton & Shuttleworth Limited. Robey & Co were however the only company to design and build their own prototype aircraft.
Most people have heard of the Sopwith Camel in relation to the the First World War and Clayton & Shuttleworth became the fourth contractor to build this aeroplane having received an order in March 1917. These aircraft were produced in the famous Titanic Works until 1919 - these works were named as such because they were built at the same time as the infamous ship and were also the same length as the Atlantic liner.
I would love to embellish more on the happenings of these companies during this period but I don't have the time and I don't want to bore you all! However next time you drive into Lincoln along Tritton Road you may want to try and envisage this area (Morrisons, the University and

The marton feast
We were lucky enough to be loaned some scrapbooks that were put
together by some forward thinking ladies of the village and contain newspaper clippings and photos of events from times gone by.
Before we scan the books and put them in our archives we would like to give you a glimpse of what treasures we found inside.
One thing that did stand out and featured at least once in all of the books was the Marton Feast, which also incorporated the villages of Gate Burton and Brampton. It was a really big affair that seemed to span a whole week climaxing at the weekend with two days packed with events!
We know that the feast was a popular event a long time ago as shown in the
photo above; however we do not have an exact date. It ceased sometime just before the Second World War and was re-instated some forty years later in 1978. It is from this date that our photos continue.
So ignoring the pun please feast your eyes on these wonderful photos taken across the years at the Marton Feast.

Feast of Fun at Marton Weekendfrom a newspaper article in 1978
After an absence of 40 years the ‘Marton Feast’ was revived at the
weekend and many people hope it will once again be an annual event.
Much hard work was put in by committee members and many helpers, who ensured that all sections of the community could be involved in what proved to be a very successful and enjoyable time for all.
The feasting opened with a buffet and dance on Friday in a large marquee on the parish field and a large crowd enjoyed dancing to the music of the Jack Smith Sound and the Tornadoes disco.
Disco gogo dancers contributed two interlude spots and the feast trio of Tim Farquhar, Roy Staniforth and Ian Kitchinson sang.
A raffle for a large piece of beef was won by Mrs G Roach, and a hard-working group of ladies handled the mammoth task of providing refreshments for 300 dancers.
Saturday opened with the final of the Feast Cup junior football competition in which Sudbrooke beat Guinness 6-2.
The afternoon festivities began with a spectacular parade through the village led by the Lindsey pipe band, the East Stockwith Morris dancers, fancy dress competitors and the 1st Marton Scouts.
Chief guests were television newsman Alan Hardwick and his fiancé Miss Julie Cryer. Mr Hardwick performed the formal opening ceremony. Later joined by Councillor Mrs Jill Westgarth and Mr Nigel Taylor, Mr Hardwick and Miss Cryer judged the fancy dress competition.
Winners were: Infants - Phillip Molson and Ian Moles ; Juniors - Emma Worrell and Tina Molson ; Seniors – Mr B Gelder and Mr B Bealby.
The judges received a white carnation buttonholes and bouquets of carnations and chrysanthemums.
The Morris dancers gave a display, there was music from the pipe band, the Vikings hire wire act, an archery display by Mick Houghton and a tug-of-war competition which was won by Trentport with Bassetlaw as runners-up.
There were also various games and stalls and refreshments served by the helpers. A licensed bar was provided by the staff of the Castle Inn on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Nail-driving. This time by Mr McNee - was a feature of Marton Feast.

Winners were: ladies - Mrs Hewerdine, Mrs Moody and Ms Toulson ; gents - Mr G Hill, Mr J Dixon and Miss Brown. Raffle winner was Mrs Hobbins ; miniature drive winners Mrs Vickerman and Mr Robinson.
Winner of a Sunday fishing match was Keith Ford with a weight of 12½oz. Equal second were Mr D ford and Mr C Liversidge. In the afternoon a football match entertained a good crowd with the over 25s taking on the under 25s. The younger team won 5-4. A mock cup made by Mr Gelder was presented to the winning team and a bottle of champagne was opened. To close the Feast on Sunday evening a United Service was held in St Margaret’s church, with a full attendance.
The service was taken by the Rev Cook of Saxilby and organist was Mrs Roach. The church was decorated by Mrs H Tudor. The collection was for the Feast funds.

Trentside reports
reports from the Kettlethorpe & District Women's Institute
March 2013
This was AGM time round again but well-attended on a grey and
damp evening - so the telly had nothing spellbinding to offer! Our committee, bless them, are almost all safely restored to giving us a good time for the next twelve months, and here I like to remind them that we are grateful for all the hard work they put in.
Our secretary read a report of the past year's activities and the treasurer assured us that, as a well-known comedian told his audience, “We, m keepin' our end up!”
Our old (and new) president said it was always her aim we continued to work, play and keep caring for one another, before presenting our competition trophy to this year's winner - Janet Wilcocks, followed in marks by Vivienne Elliott and Ann Close.
Charities: Each year we choose another two to support and this time it is the turn of Cancer Research, plus our ongoing favourite of 'ROADS' which signifies continuing our interest of a country area in Romania which we have seen grow up out of the original dreadful orphanages that were there some years ago.
The days may be still immured in winter
but our spring programmes are about to begin. The group spring meeting is in Saxilby on April 19. A curry night is to be held on June 15 in the Festival Hall, Market Rasen, followed by a treasure hunt on the 26th. Further ahead the August group meeting will be in Willingham, when we shall be hearing about bread-making.
Looking (briefly) to next winter it has been decided to replace the usual carol service with a suitable Christmas theme in a concert at Marton village hall. The Trentside Singers will perform and other talents may be on display. To take part see Gill Kyme. The first programme of spring could be very enjoyable if the weather shines on us - a daffodil walk from Gate Burton Hall starting at 2pm on April 7 - not long now ladies!.
After a talk by yours truly about her police experiences - longer ago than I wish to publicly admit, we said goodbye to Pat Green who is leaving us to live nearer her family in Bristol. Pat, who has seen the ROADS project through from inception, received a present with our best wishes for her future, and will be sorely missed.
Raffles were taken home by Toni Richardson, Sylvia Johnson, Christine Hollis and Barbara Clay.

Gainsborough rural southneighbourhood policing Team
April in Saxilby, lots of daffs showing their heads and thieves appearing
again. We have had a spate of thefts including gas cylinders from the A57 at Odder and Bridge Street, Saxilby, along with two pedal cycles from the same area, however luckily these have now been found at Morrison’s in Gainsborough, obviously travelling criminals. A local garage was hit on the weekend of the 21st April, when doors were stolen from a motor vehicle. Yes DOORS! Whatever next?
There was also a theft from Allens Business Park where thieves stole a 4’ x 5’ water bowser trailer with large red ‘Speedy Hire’ logo on the side. Perhaps the offenders were thirsty, as in the same area a farm had some red diesel stolen overnight of the 19 April, so all in all plenty of activity.
In summary then, lock your doors (if you still have some), lock and mark your pedal cycles, think about the security of your household fuels (gas cylinders/domestic oil), don’t leave the husband unattended on the driveway (seems they will steal anything these days), I can hear it now “Oh, please take him!”
On a serious note though folks, have a look at your security, make it difficult for any would-be thieves before they strike and not afterwards, we are all in this together!
We ask that you are vigilant and if you see any such activity please ring 999 if it is happening!
So in preparation for the next holidays please advise your children:
Children do not float unaided, if you can’t swim keep away from water.
Children and alcohol do not mix well – if you’re under 18 remember it’s an offence to drink alcohol in public, if you’re over 18 and thinking about supplying it to an under 18 – it’s a fine of £80.
Do not drop litter – clean up after yourselves – no one else will! There is also a fixed penalty notice of £60 for littering.Tell the teenagers - not to be so lackadaisical – they won’t know what you mean but it’s such a good word.
WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR SPARE TIME?
How would you feel about setting aside some of your free time to help us fight crime in your community?
YOU CAN HELP!
To help us promote Crimestoppers and to raise vitally important funds to continue
our work, please go to:
www.crimestoppers-uk.org/volunteers or call 0208 835 3700 to find out more.
We need you and so does your community!
The FIRST point of contact with Lincolnshire Police should always be 101 because they CAN handle your call 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week - UNLESS IT IS AN EMERGENCY - THEN RING 999.
