TRENTON BAPTIST CHURCH SERVICE ATTENDANCE vs. CAPACITY

CONCLUSION

Sanctuary

Brief: For the welfare of the church, a church’s auditorium capacity is measured not by how many persons can technically be seated in a space but rather by a percentage that is taken from the total number of seats. This percentage, known as the 80% rule, is the rate at which church patrons feel comfortable in a church setting. If church service attendance increases above 80%, the auditorium will feel too crowded for many of a church’s patrons and church attendance will typically either drop or remain the same until enlargements are made. 1

With an average sanctuary attendance of 176 in 2010, the Trenton Baptist Church can currently hold approximately 59% of its entire membership within the main sanctuary space, comfortably, at a rate of 24” per person. The Trenton Baptist Church can hold approximately 73% of its entire membership within the main sanctuary space with a fire code limit of 18” per person.

In dividing the church service into two (2) services, the Trenton Baptist Church has positively expanded the sanctuary’s ability to accommodate additional patrons. The red line in GRAPH 2 represents the comfortable capacity of the church and is set at a maximum rate of 104 persons. Within the past decade (2000-2010), the church has remained below the comfortable capacity rate for both morning services. From 1998-2000, the church was well above the 80% rate, making conditions in the sanctuary crowded.

Currently, the Trenton Baptist Church holds 121 people comfortably (24” per- person) and 161 people at fire code rates. To meet the needs of the congregation, the church should enlarge its current sanctuary space to its maximum potential to accommodate more members. Considering the “80% rule”, the Trenton Baptist Church is currently at nearly complete capacity with only 96 seats available in the church sanctuary and an average attendance of 92 in each service.

At the current rate (1.2%, 2002-2010), the growth of the church has most likely been hindered by its lack of sanctuary worship space as exhibited in GRAPH 2 for the years 2002-2010, and a lack of parking which currently stands as adequate for only 105 persons. Other figures show the communities surrounding the church growing, however, the Trenton Baptist Church sanctuary attendance growth is 1.2% for the years (2002-2010), which can be seen in GRAPH 1. If the church sanctuary space is expanded and parking is improved, it is possible that church growth numbers may again excel in the growth range of 45% as they did in 2000-2001, when the church freed space by offering double Sunday services in the main sanctuary space.

Parking

Brief: Parking spaces, similar to auditorium spaces, also have a fill capacity than can promote or deter church service attendance. Currently, the Trenton Baptist Church parking area contains 62 car spaces. Each car typically carries 1.7 people for a total of available parking for 105 persons. The parking area for the church currently may not meet the needs of the Sunday School, but does meet the needs of the double service church sanctuary service of an average of 92 persons per service. For special events whereas the entire congregation may meet in the sanctuary, the parking area is not adequate.

Scenario One: The current sanctuary space is renovated to seat 168 people and holds two services each Sunday.

Sanctuary & Parking After renovations, the Trenton Baptist Church will be able to hold 168 persons at one time and 224 at the fire code rate. With the application of the 80% rule, the comfortable capacity will be 140 persons. In two church services, the church will be able to comfortably provide ample space for 280 people. If this scenario is implemented, the sanctuary space could serve the church until the year 2050 as exhibited in the figures in “Church Projections.” In scenario 1, the amount of parking needed at comfortable full capacity is 82 parking spaces. For fire code rates, the amount of parking needed is 131 spaces.

Scenario Two: The church adds a new sanctuary to seat 480 people.

Sanctuary & Parking

After renovations, the Trenton Baptist Church will be able to hold 480 persons. With the application of the 80% rule, the comfortable capacity will be 384 persons. In two church services, the church will be able to comfortably provide ample space for 768 persons. If this scenario is implemented, the sanctuary space will meet and exceed the necessary requirements allowing the church ample room to expand. In scenario two, the amount of parking needed at comfortable full capacity is 225 parking spaces.

Scenario Three: The church adds a new sanctuary that includes a proposed balcony to seat 684 people.

Sanctuary & Parking

After renovations, the Trenton Baptist Church will be able to hold 684 persons. With the application of the 80% rule, the comfortable capacity will be 547 persons. In two church services, the church will be able to comfortably provide ample space for 1,094 persons. If this scenario is implemented, the sanctuary space will meet and exceed the necessary requirements allowing the church ample room to expand. In scenario three, the amount of parking needed at comfortable full capacity is 321 parking spaces.
