Team welome

WelcomePleased to meet you;

I thought it was about time to introduce everyone to you all properly and from each issue you’ll hear about what’s been happening with us as well as what’s in the magazine. Trend is a real team eff ort, so I thought we should mark this issue by showing you the team that helps make each issue of the magazine special and unique and thank them for their work behind the scenes.

These are the wonderful women who deal with everything that you don’t see on the page. They do everything from organising our events to dealing with advertising and business development, from keeping our accounts in order to managing every aspect of the company. They, more than anyone, have helped Trend grow and become the magazine it is today.

As statement of what they all do by the time you read this, we should know if we’ve been lucky enough to win an award for Best Magazine Cover 2011 at this year’s Scottish Magazine Awards... Keep watching the website and our facebook page.

A round of applause please!

best regards

One of Aberdeen’s best kept beauty secrets is hidden away inside the Nuffi eld Health Centre and Gym on Justice Mill Lane. Although OUCH Nails and Beauty has been on site for two years, its location means that many Trend readers may have missed out on one of the city’s friendliest and skilled full service salons. From the moment Mama, the receptionist greets you, you’ll feel at home.

Ouch is justifi ably popular with the gym’s members, but you don’t need to be a member at Nuffi eld to take advantage of all that the team have to offer.

Ouch carries the Guinot line of face and body treatments and products which are used at over 10,000 salons and spas world-wide. Guinot doesn’t test any of their products on animals, but if the improvements in skin tone, texture, hydration and softness we

experienced after trying out a few samples is anything to go by, we’re sure they have no shortage of volunteer testers in Paris.

Ouch also offers the only GuinotTechniSpa treatment machine north of Perthshire. It’s designed to improve the appearance of cellulite, leaving the skin looking toned and lifted through a combination of stimulation, electronic ionisation and lipo-aspiration.

Although the results are immediate – some report a reduction of 1.5cm from the waist in an hour – a series of six or twelve treatments gives the best results.

Ouch stays open till 9pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays and offers a great range of packages that will perk you up for the party season, or help you recover from the excesses afterwards. There’s a tailored selection of

Hydrodermiefacials, Lycon waxing, spray tanning, eye treatments and a full menu of nail services.

Students are offered a 20% discount and the salon also offers waxing, massages and facials for men, meaning there’s no excuse not to look wonderful.

Julie Sangster and her team are well known on the Aberdeenshire beauty scene since Riah Hair Design has been a fi rm favourite for over two decades, but now Julie has branched out with a new beauty salon just round the corner in Banchory’s ScottSkinner Square.

Riah Body and Soul offers a light airy space and tranquil atmosphere which gives clients the opportunity to relax with a beauty-boosting range of facials and body treatments.

Riah has selected premium skin and hair care brand La Biosthetique, renowned for its high quality, naturally derived ingredients and ability to create stunning results. The range includes the near-miraculous La

Dermosthetique, which has been described as “Botox in a bottle”.

It’s Riah’s all-embracing approach to beauty that makes it so special. Julie offers a personal wig service for those who need to replace their own hair. She’s been specially trained by a charity called My New Hair by Salons that Care to help both women and men suffering hair loss, due to cancer or other illnesses, by customising and styling wigs which gives the client a more natural and confi dent look. She also works with a trichologist to help those with weak hair or hair loss.

Riah is already regarded as the beauty destination for brides who want to look their best. The entire bridal party can pampered to perfection while enjoying exclusive use of a

room in the salon and a glass of bubbly. The salon also hosts bespoke pamper parties for all ages on Saturday afternoons.

Riah’s clients can also book facial rejuvenation procedures with registered nurse and advanced aesthetic practitioner Lynda Smith of SAORSA Aesthetics to achieve a subtle and natural looking result. Lynda offers an individualised approach and believes in educating clients to make informed decisions.

Everyone who visits Riah comes out feeling and looking their best.

We’ve all had moments when you just have to have fi sh and chips... Trend went on the search of three different venues where Fish and Chips is always on the menu.

The wood lined bar area of Cape Horn Lounge Bar at the Mariner Hotel is a popular bar supper venue with locals and visitors alike. The menu has their signature stables but they have a good daily selection of specials on offer also.

Having an upmarket fi sh restaurant, Atlantis, also attached to the hotel you can be assured of the freshest fi sh being offered. Ours was delicious. The perfectly cooked fi sh was fl aky, as it should be and the batter wasn’t too thick or soggy, my pet hate! Accompanied by peas, chunky chips and homemade tartare sauce what more could you ask for, ketchup please!

The award winning Bay Chip Shop in Stonehaven was our carry out venue. They specialise in being able to offer fi sh cooked for allergy sufferers and they have won numerous awards. The take away fi sh and chip supper

from here was freshly cooked to order for us and our mouths watered as we waited. The end result was truly fab we sat in the car eating the delicious offering which brought back fond childhood memories.

Finally, we got dressed up for the Courtyard restaurant’s ‘Posh Scampi’. The beautifully presented ’Panko Breadcrumbed Monkfi sh Tail with Handcut Chunky Chips & Tangy Tartare Sauce’ was presented with the fl air and appearance you would expect from this lovely dining destination. The outer bread crumbed coating was crispy and light and the fi sh inside was fi rm and meaty as it should be. This was defi nitely a real treat!

Restaurant REVIEWFIFE ARMS, TURRIFF

> REVIEW by COURTNEy O'GRADy

The Fife Arms stands on the Square in Turriff, thirty straightforward miles northwest of Aberdeen. Upon walking through the door, you find yourself in a cosy sitting room full of plump leather sofas and armchairs that you sink into before being handed your glass of wine and a menu to peruse. Brimming with everything from seasonal game to an abundance of seafood – all locally sourced –

the only dilemma presented by the menu and specials board is narrowing down your choice.

Eventually, I settled on the seared Shetland salmon starter, followed by langoustine on a bed of linguine and finished off with sticky toffee pudding. My dining companion, who kindly tolerated my requests for bites, opted for the mushroom risotto starter, chicken

in a spiced Moroccan tomato sauce, and a chocolate crème brûlée accompanied by Turkish delight ice cream.

Served in a dining area that unites contemporary style with rustic charm, the food provides a unique taste experience that can only be achieved through the combination of good ideas and high-quality fresh ingredients.

Besides enjoying a fantastic meal, I finally learned that some dishes – in particular the langoustine and sticky toffee pudding – can be prepared so perfectly, they seem to disappear, or melt, in your mouth before you’ve even had a chance to chew.

But don’t take my word for it – drive out to the Fife Arms and find out for yourself.

www.fifearms.co.uk T: 01888 563124

People often describe a favourite restaurant by saying that the food they serve simply ‘melts in your mouth.’ being a cynic, I am never convinced because for me, this has never actually happened with anything other than ice cream. After hearing it said on numerous occasions about the Fife Arms Hotel, I decided to take a drive out and see if I could find some truth to this somewhat overused turn of phrase.

Why did you decide to become a chef? I’ve always had a passion for cooking and have enjoyed doing it for my friends and family. My food always received good feedback from them, which made me realise I should turn my passion into a career.

Tell us how you became to be in your current job? The Store was one of my favourite places to buy ingredients to cook at home, so when I saw they were hiring, I had to enquire. At a meeting with owner Andrew Booth, I was keen to impress, so I bought some of The Store’s own silverside beef. I smoked it in my home smoker, and it was a hit! After a couple of trial shifts, I became a permanent fi xture in The Store kitchen.

How would you describe the food you offer at The Store? At The Store we offer great home-cooked food made from top-quality produce from our own farm and local area. I would say we serve classic favorites with a modern twist.

What do you love about cooking and your job? I love experimenting with cooking; the thing I love about my job is cooking with good local ingredients, which is why I love working at The Store, which produces all its own beef and lamb. There is nothing better than cooking with ingredients that you have seen being reared right where you work.

What's the fi rst thing you learnt to cook? The fi rst thing I remember making regularly was a stir-fry; I loved how it allowed me to play with different textures and fl avours.

Is there a cut of meat you feel is particularly underrated? I would say beef skirt is one of the most underrated. I often marinate beef skirt in a balsamic barbecue sauce for a week, which makes the meat very tender. Then it just needs to be cooked for a minute on each side, which makes it ideal for a BBQ.

Finding the perfect function venue can be a tricky business - but not if you join the country club - for you'll be in good company among the savvy people who plan their parties or corporate events out of town at one of Aberdeenshire's best loved pubs, the Broadstraik Inn.

The historic former coaching inn has seen almost every type of celebration imaginable down the centuries and is still a favourite destination for today's discerning customers, whether it's corporate clients from the nearby international oil and related companies, charitable and business organisations, or families looking to mark an anniversaryor birthday.

The Broadstraik's two smart function rooms provide the ideal venue for a variety of events, and can cater for the most relaxed to the most formal occasion. More intimate occasions, for up to 30 people, suit the smaller room while the larger one can take up to 80. Bigger functions can utilise both rooms to accommodate more guests.

Companies choose the country pub for private dining, AGMs and fundraising nights while other clients hold

regular lunches or weekly events. It’s also popular for family events from celebrations to funeral teas.

Champagne and canapé receptions start at around £10 per head and a sit down three-course dinner can range from £25 upwards, depending on the menu. In the summer you could even have a barbecue.

The key to planning a function in the country at The Broadstraik is fl exibility - you let them know what you want, they'll try to make it happen.

Coming into the festive season, we all partake in a tipple of mulled wine but it can be several days until we can contemplate indulging again as it has a habit of leaving us rather hung-over, by which point any remaining mulled wine is usually thrown away. However, Dusk has come up with a method of not only utilising the leftovers, but also being able to beat the associated blues:

Mulled Punch25ml Caorunn Gin50 ml Mulled Wine12.5ml Fresh orange Juice

12.5ml Fresh Lemon Juice

12.5ml Vanilla Sugar Syrup* *(made by dissolving 4 parts sugar in 2parts boiling water, once cooled leave a vanilla pod in the syrup for at least 24 hrs)

Shake all the above ingredients withice. Then pour into a tall glass fi lled with crushed ice, and garnish with a lemon wedge.

The dusketeers and I would like to takethis opportunity to wish all the Trendreaders a Merry Christmas and HappyNew Year.

We look forward to serving you allover the coming festivities.

Each year, during the month formerly known as November, men around the world grow a moustache to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues - specifi cally prostate and testicular cancer.

The team at subsea specialist Flexlife participated in the 2011 Movember campaign when 13 members of staff ditched their razors in support of the cause. Flexlife Chief Executive Stuart Mitchell said: “Statistics show that more than

10,000 men will die of prostate cancer in the UK this year alone, that’s a startling reality. Being able to show support for such a fantastic charity has been a real pleasure and a great source of entertainment within the team – we’ll defi nitely be participating again in years to come.”

The Movember Foundation uses the money raised to fund two programmes. The fi rst is an awareness and education programme that signifi cantly increases the understanding and

reduces the stigmas ofthe health risks that men face.

The second is Movember’s Global Action Plan, which accelerates key outcomes in prostate cancer research by facilitating global research collaboration projects.

There can’t be many recruitment businesses that have grown and prospered for forty years while maintaining a reputation for outstanding customer service, but that’s what Aberdeen Appointments Agency have to celebrate as they mark their 40th anniversary. Of course there are even fewer that owe their start in business to a £250 loan and a winning racehorse called Specify...

Despite taking a gamble as a start-up, AAA has now placed over 20,000 people in permanent positions and 70,000 in temporary or contract roles. Managing Director Gus Porter, who has over 30 years experience in the business, puts the company’s success down to their skill in selecting their own staff, saying, “Our people have fantastic work ethics, pride in their work, the company and a burning desire to be the best in the business. Our clients and candidates tell us they experience the difference when dealing with AAA.”

If you’re old enough to have given up on TopShop, but not on looking stylish, then Elizabeth Havens should defi nitely be top of your shopping list. With two shops in Laurencekirk and a new shop in Stonehaven, it’s rather like taking a trip round your own dream wardrobe!

The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and can provide impartial expert advice if you want to try a new look. They’re also happy to let you browse the colour co-ordinated racks to your heart’s content. And your heart will be pretty content given business partners, Elizabeth and Helen’s great eye for design that will remain wearable for more than a month or two. It’s a well-curated collection that offers everything from school run chic to standout bandage dresses. We loved the well tailored separates from Olsen and a pair of butter-soft suede trousers from Marc Aurel. Much of the stock can’t be found elsewhere and is priced well for the quality on offer. Being stylish is rarely this straightforward!

Given that the fi rst shop started out two years ago as a bespoke costume jewellery, childrenswear and gift retailer, it’s no surprise that jewellery and accessories are a strong suit. You’ll fi nd a great range of classic and quirky bags, scarves, hosiery and gloves in store. The range from Italian designer, Elisa Cavaletti is a standout.

And as a fi nal touch, Elizabeth can even make you a bespoke piece of jewellery from freshwater pearls and crystals that will draw admiring, and maybe one or two envious, glances.

If you can’t make it to Stonehaven or Laurencekirk, don’t fret, as Elizabeth and Helen plan to expand the online jewellery shop to include clothing, gifts and accessories early in 2012.

recently i had the pleasure on the same day of road testing the latest mini Cooper s All 4 Countryman and the BmW X1, 2 litre diesel m sport. To make my comparison i drove them both over one of my favourite roads in Aberdeenshire - the Cairn o'mount.

Both cars behaved impeccably, the Mini with 0 - 60 in 7.6 seconds and 240 nm of torque, coupled with a 4 wheel drive system was an absolute treat to drive on the twisting, winding uphill and downhill sections of the road. The Countryman comes in three

states of 1.6-litre petrol tune - 97bhp One, 121bhp Cooper and 181bhp, turbocharged Cooper S - and two diesels, the 89bhp D and the 110bhp Cooper D. It’s the Cooper S we tried here, in range topping, four wheel drive ALL4 spec. All of the petrol models are available with an automatic option.

On the other hand the BMW X1 is small, but well proportioned.  Take a closer look and one will defi nitely notice the treatment to the metal surfaces which have been sculpted in a fl uid fashion to off er the vehicle a robust stance which fi ts in well with the ‘X’ family of vehicles

from BMW, and remember it is a diesel, had 350 nm of torque, was more than capable of giving the Countryman a run for its money, albeit a diff erent driving style.

Both these vehicles are produced by BMW but appeal to diff erent segments of the Market. Which is better? Well that is all down to personal choice. If I was lucky enough to have my pick - it would be the Mini for me.

Both cars were supplied by the John Clark Motor Group.

Angela knew she wanted to be an artist from an early age. “Deciding a career path was easy. At school, the only two things I was good at were sport and art. As no one would pay me for running as fast as I could, the choice was made for me,” she laughed.

Angela works from her studio, gallery and workshops at home near Insch. “Up until about 2003 my art was very conventional. Then I tried something different: doing really detailed close-up work of cattle, then sheep, then horses. In 2006, I took my first original of a black Highland bull to the Royal Highland Show. The original was sold before we even arrived there and the prints flew.

I used to paint lots of different subjects, but when my husband Sandy and I began exhibiting at the main agricultural shows and

sporting events, the animals just took over.”Over the years, her style has evolved; “I now work solely with pastel on paper. It’s quick and very effective. Ideas for new work are usually inspired from photos we take at events around the country,” she added.

Angela’s prints provide an affordable entree into buying art for those who’ve never purchased before, with many being produced in strictly limited editions. Prices start below £50, which represents great value for such striking work.

Angela’s original work is so in demandthat she has a backlog of several years’ worth of commissions stacked up and isn’t currently accepting any more. Angela sells her originals and prints from her own gallery, as well as through approximately a hundredtrade suppliers.

Award-winning mobile phone specialist dF Communications is celebrating a sensational silver anniversary year that saw it crowned the region’s top customer service provider.

The past 12 months have also seen profi ts shoot up while staff still found the time to fundraise a magnifi cent £18,000 for charity.

It’s been a bittersweet year for the family-owned Aberdeen fi rm which suff ered the loss of its founder, Dick Fleming, from cancer in January 2011.

But his daughter Fiona and her team, including sales director Craig Forsyth, have built on his legacy to ensure the business is stronger than ever and entering 2012 in great shape.

Over the past year DF Communications has won seven out of eight O2 Partner of the Month awards

for new sales, customer retention and positive customer feedback.

The high standard of customer care was also recognised when the company scooped the Northern Star Business Awards’ Excellence in Customer Service accolade inthe autumn.

And since Dick died various members of the team have been fundraising in his memory for Marie Cure Cancer Care. Fiona completed the Mighty Deerstalker cross country night run while other staff ran the Balmoral 10k race and they all rounded off their money-making year with a charity event at Soul Casino.

“It was never going to be the same again without dad,” said Fiona, “but we know he’d be proud of what we’ve achieved this year.”

Jonathan has been making furniture for thirty years and got started because he wanted quality pieces and good design for his home and decided the best way was to produce them himself. Two years ago, he became a full time craftsman-designer, working to commission and showing at arts fairs and during nEos.

Belinda uses her computer to create complex layered textiles which she weaves on her power loom. His/her work is a constant process of invention and new techniques. She’s currently producing woven portraits. “I start with

an image which inspires me, usually one of my own drawings, paintings or photos or combination of these. My range of subject matter is wide, from landscape scenes, flowers, birds to pre and post operative x-rays, at the other extreme.

“I’ve worked with natural fibres, linen, cotton, wool and silk, but I don’t restrict myself to these. I’ve used wooden dowels, paper yarns, and newer yarns such as phosphorescent yarn which glows in the dark, and high twist yarns which contract when taken off the loom,” Belinda explained.

Both Belinda and Jonathan enjoy the process of working closely with clients to create something unique and are looking forward to combining their talents more in the future, should the right opportunity arise. So far, the couple have upholstered one of Johnathan’s chairs in a fabric produced by Belinda and are interested in collaborating more in future.

Both Belinda and Jonathan have their own approach to the creative process. Jonathan, who is influenced by natural forms and Art Deco lines, said, “I look at the functional requirement and then look at the location it will be placed.

Aberdeenshire’smost creativecouple? It can’t always be easy working alongsideyour other half, but Aberdeenshire makersJonathan and Belinda Rose find harmony inmaking furniture and working with textiles intheir workshops in Hirn near Banchory.

Page 63: Trend Dec 2011 / Jan 2012

63

When working with a client this is often about solving a problem or making something which they are unable to find elsewhere. Ideas can stem from the client and in this situation I see it as my job to become an interpreter. The materials I have used so far have been limited to wood, but I'm open to other ideas as my design vocabulary grows”.

For Belinda, whose influences include weavers Bhakti Ziek and Lia Cook in the US, almost anything can provide a starting point. “My taste in art is eclectic which shows in my work. I don’t yet have a particular signature, I love to explore,” she continued.

Belinda’s work also features at NEOS and a number of joint exhibitions throughout the year, such as Fabric of the Land, an event organised by Smart for the University of Aberdeen Department Of Geology.

And are there any drawbacks to working so closely with your other half? Jonathan admits that conflicting deadlines give rise to the odd problem, saying, “There is something about creativity which means we are often thinking about what is possible, something in the future. This occasionally results in the present being a bit chaotic!”

Belinda and Jonathan are happy to discuss individual projects or commissions and can be reached through their websites.

Few people would turn down the opportunity to trade city life for a weekend hideaway in a woodland retreat, but normally such a luxury involves a lot of planning and a long drive. So when I realised that the Loch Kinord Hotel and its Royal Deeside Woodland Lodges were a mere forty minutes from Aberdeen, I threw a few essentials into the car, loaded in the husband and children, and headed off.

Before I knew it, we found ourselves engulfed in a canopy of endless rows of evergreen trees that stand sentry along the roadside and receive you through the Eastern Gateway to the Cairngorm National Park – suddenly, the city seemed very far away indeed. Located in Dinnet, just outside Aboyne, Loch Kinord Hotel has a surprising amount to offer everyone – from couples or families looking for a quick weekend getaway to large groups celebrating special occasions that wish to have the whole place to themselves.

From the minute you walk through the door, the cosy atmosphere and friendly attention let you know that you are welcome and in good hands. The hotel itself boasts nineteen en-suite bedrooms, each unique in décor and each showcasing its own individual tartan created by a local designer. If you prefer a bit more space, there are eight woodland lodges that feel so much like home, my children had their feet up and remote control in hand before I even had time to bring in the luggage.

Although the lodges offer excellent facilities for self-catering, it would be negligent to miss out on the chance to dine in the hotel’s restaurant. Rarely have I had a dining experience that simultaneously makes the adults feel like they are in a first class restaurant while still offering food the children will love. From the homemade bread through to the delectable desserts, you will not be served anything that isn’t beautifully presented and, wherever possible, created using organic local produce.

After a night’s sleep that was every bit as delicious as our supper the night before,

we awoke ready to explore Dinnet and the surrounding area. As it happens, the hotel and lodges back on to the Muir of Dinnet Nature Reserve, so we literally just stepped outside the lodge door and began a three-hour walk around Loch Kinord that included a bit of urban exploring through the Burn O’Vat and Rob Roy’s Cave. The breathtaking scenery, fresh air and absolute solitude – bar the odd feisty swan or two – combine to leave you feeling as refreshed as a week in a health spa.

But walking is only the tip of the iceberg when you’re in Royal Deeside – you can cycle the old railway line to Ballater, pay a quick visit to nearby Balmoral Castle, partake in a bit of salmon fishing, or even hit the slopes during the ski season. If you fancy a bit of retail therapy, a jaunt into Aboyne wouldn’t go amiss or if you’re looking for a wedding venue, you will want to introduce yourself to the fairytale Glen Tanar Chapel.

It is often the case that we fail to consider the holiday destinations that are literally on our doorstep, but I can tell you that Dinnet is a destination not to be missed. Whether you’re planning a family getaway, a romantic weekend, or looking for a magnificent backdrop for your wedding, I highly recommend making the Loch Kinord Hotel your base for a relaxing retreat toRoyal Deeside.

I’m sure I’m not alone when I admit that – having lived in Aberdeen for most of my life – I have always taken the city’s maritime heritage for granted. So, when I went along to the Maritime Museum in Shiprow, I certainly wasn’t expecting to learn as much as I did.

The museum itself is cleverly spread across three buildings – a converted church, a glass link building, and Provost Ross’ House, which was built in 1593. The layout of the museum, and the way the buildings have been integrated means that it is not a museum that is big and drafty – it is far more personal, and the unusual exhibits and the strong

focus on the lives of the people in the fishing, shipbuilding, and oil industries reflect this. In the church there is an old telephone that you can use to dial different numbers and listen to recorded interviews with men who worked in the fishing industries, while the old Provost’s house is now home to beautiful models and pictures of the world famous Aberdeen built clipper ships and in the link building there is a vast, suspended scale model of a rig.

During my visit there was a man with two young trainees having a discussion while they looked at the rig, and I was not surprised to

learn that companies often send new starts to the museum, and that people who work offshore take their families in to give them an idea of what they do, and where they go.

I would say too, that I have never been anywhere in Aberdeen that has such amazing views of the busy harbour that has, for so long, and during many industrial periods, been this city’s livelihood.

This being a fashion magazine, my boys were a bit unnerved when i told them they’d be trying out fi shnets for our next family feature. Fortunately – for all of us – the only fi shnets required during our visit to the Lochter Activity Centre in oldmeldrum were the type actually used to net fi sh.

Lochter, which sits unobtrusively in the beautiful Aberdeenshire countryside, off ers twenty acres of fi shing in a variety of lakes and ponds, one of which is shaped like a giant

jumping fi sh. Although bait fi shing is an option, the passion is fl y fi shing, with tuition available to all ages and abilities.

Having never held a fl y fi shing rod before, the kids and I opted to try our hand at this graceful sport under the patient guidance of Stuart, the centre’s fi shing manager. I would like to say that I was a natural, but Stuart very gently assured me that this was not the case and, once again, my children’s skills put me to shame. After learning the most important fi shing skill of all – patience – we did manage to reel in two of the centre’s hefty rainbow trout, a triumph that immediately converts a novice into an addict.

If you’re looking to entertain a large group but fi shing doesn’t appeal to everyone, then Lochter is still the place to go. While you enjoy some quiet time with rod and reel, the others can enjoy a host of other activities – from karting to digger driving to walking on water in an infl atable zorb – then reunite over a hot meal in the centre’s restaurant.

Before I visited Lochter, I thought that fi shing was all about catching fi sh. Now I know it’s as much about fi nding a quiet spot away from the blaring volume of a busy life, and that’s what will lure me back in future.

At fi rst glance, Estrella may seem an unlikely choice for the Christmas issue of Trend. After all this Aberdeen based quartet play a kind of 80’s-style rock’n’roll that has more in common with the neon signs of LA's Sunset Strip than the Christmas lights of Union Street in wintertime.

Yet in some ways, they’re a perfect fi t for the festive season. After all, if there was ever a time to forget the daily grind, let your hair down and have a party, it is now. And if there was ever a band who want to do that all year round, it is Estrella.

Sure, they could be accused of being out of step with the latest musical trends, but Estrella couldn’t care less about that stuff . And that’s what I love about them. They march to the beat of their own (rock) drum.

And here’s the kicker - Estrella may look like they’re just having a good time being in a kick-ass-rock-band, but these are some talented guys who take their music as seriously as any band I could name. They know exactly what they want to sound like and on their debut album they’ve pulled it off with aplomb.

Produced by none-other-than Ozzy Osbourne’s keyboard player John T Sinclair, “Come Out To Play” is authentic and

impressive, riotously good fun and impossible to listen to without grinning.

The album has it all: the Steven Tyler-esque vocals, Van Halen-y keyboard stabs and virtuoso guitar solos; there’s even a power ballad. It’s like the soundtrack to an awesome ‘80s teen fi lm you never knew existed. Put it this way: Bill & Ted would love these guys (and for some of us, that's high praise indeed).

If you’ve ever felt the urge to air-guitar along to Aerosmith or Guns’n’Roses, or pump your fi st in the air to Motley Crue or Poison, Estrella may well be the most unlikely Christmas present you didn’t even know you wanted.

All together now, “Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell…RAWK!!”

“Come Out To Play” is due to be released in March.

The double A-side “Party/One Love” is available fromiTunes now. www.myspace.com/estrellarocks

When I went to the Dirty Dancing Scottish premier in Glasgow I was expecting a show. I knew it would be loud, and lively, and very, very pink, but what I hadn’t counted on was the sheer energy of the thing – and not just from the cast, from the audience too.

There was dancing and proclamations of “Nobody puts Baby in a corner” long before the stars set foot on stage – what can only be described as the most energetic crowd I have ever seen had started the party before they had even had their tickets checked at thetheatre door.

Inside the theatre, I was surrounded by groups of women in cocktail dresses,

jeans, or ‘I carried a watermelon’ t-shirts, all singing, dancing and – I’m going to say it – having the time of their lives… In two hours, the outstanding cast barely stopped twirling, kicking, and lifting – I have never seen dancing like it (and I’ve seen the fi lm). The clever addition of some new scenes meant that even the most diehard fans were in for some surprises.

If you have seen the fi lm – you’re going to love this show, and if you haven’t seen the fi lm – you’re going to love this show. Whether or not you’re a

lifelong fan, the dancing is spectacular, the music is great, and the audience is a show in itself.

Win tickets to dirty dancing at HmT When it comes to Aberdeen from the 6th to 31st of March next year, two lucky Trend readers and a friend can enjoy the show for free! To be in with a chance of winning, just go to the Trend website www.trendmagazine.co.uk click on the competitions tab and answer the following question: Who should never be put in a corner?

OUR WINNING LETTER!Dear TrendMy wife’s mother recently visited us from Lincoln. And as you do we kept thinking of things to do to make her holiday enjoyable. One Sunday we decided to treat her to luncheon at Celebrations of Turriff. Not realising there was a sale on; you can imagine how excited she and my wife were when they browsed the clothing in the ladies dress shop! Two things I was grateful for (I’ll be 65 on Dec 25th) is the chair and Trend magazine provided for comfort and perusal. Trend magazine kept me engrossed throughout the somewhat lengthy and 'expensive' ordeal. Joking really, but seriously I found the magazine very interesting and enlightening. I'm going to close now and try the competitions.Looking forward to the next issue.Brian Westmacott,Maud

The first annual John Clark BmW & mini Ladies night was a great success, the

dealership guests enjoyed an evening of motor education and pampering. Lucky

customers learnt from showroom and workshop demonstrations whilst enjoying

cocktails and canapés, an added bonus was getting their nails and make-up done.

Thanks to everyone that attended and we look forward to the 2012 event.

It was a long way to go to spend just 27 minutes on the rugby fields of New Zealand but Aberdeen’s international scrum half, Chris Cusiter, has put the disappointments of the 2011 World Cup behind him. The Glasgow Warrior has set his sights firmly on regaining the number one spot in Scotland’s team that begins the 2012 Six Nations campaign against England at Murrayfield on February 4.

“To be honest, I was fortunate to be in the squad to go to the World Cup because I had had a long lay-off through injury and was short of match practice,” he said over soft drinks at the Amicus Apple bar-bistro in Aberdeen in which he has a stake. “It meant I fell behind in the pecking order for the number 9 shirt and was only used as a replacement However, it was great to be back in New Zealand as I had been there as the Otaki Scholar from my school, Robert Gordon’s College, and again with the British and Irish Lions in 2005.”

Chris and his Glasgow teammates signed up for the Movember moustache campaign to raise awareness of male

cancer research, a subject close to his heart as his lawyer dad, Stan, fought prostate cancer for six years before he died in July last year . “Dad played rugby to a high standard as a back with Gordonians and North-Midlands and was an inspiration to me and my brother Calum,” Chris added.

Now 29, the former Border Reiver and Perpignan scrum half with 55 caps for his country, has just signed a contract until May 2015 to see out his career with Glasgow Warriors. No doubt, Chris was helped to come to his decision by his agent, former international Rowen Shepherd, of Red Sky Management, who has a cluster of top Scottish players under his wing.

As to life after rugby, Chris is cutting his teeth as a speaker and has a law degree from Edinburgh University to fall back on, not to mention a doctorate from Aberdeen University. In the meantime, he and his Aberdeen-based girlfriend, Sarah Dixon, a qualified yoga teacher who works in marketing, share one special friend. Yes, it is their loveable and good-natured black Labrador, Cali.
