Established in 1853In 1853, Daniel Straub, a miller fromGeislingen, joined forces with the SchweizerBrothers to form the “MetallwarenfabrikStraub & Schweizer” in Geislingen. This wasthe second company to be founded by Straub– previously in 1850, from the nucleus of asmall repair workshop, which he had set upto work on the construction of Geislingen’sfamous railway incline, he had founded theMaschinenfabrik Geislingen. This companywas involved mainly in manufacturing millturbines and traded throughout Europe.
1907 International companyUnder Hugo Debach the company gainedinternational standing. At the turn of thecentury the factory in Geislingen employed3,000 workers. By 1910, this number hadalready grown to 4,000, making WMF thelargest company in Württemberg at this time.Sales catalogues were printed in twelvelanguages. Subsidiary companies in London,Warsaw and Vienna opened up export mar-kets.
1927 Cromargan®, stainless 18/10A decisive factor in the company’s historywas the securing of exclusive rights to usethe special V2A steel, developed by Krupp,for the production of WMF table andkitchenware items. This material wasregistered under the name of Cromargan®which is nowadays synonymous with 18/10stainless steel. WMF launched its firstCromargan® cookware range at the LeipzigTrade Fair in 1927, followed a few years laterby the introduction of the first Cromargan®cutlery.
2013 160 years of WMFWMF celebrates its 160th birthday. WMF hasgrown from the small plaqué factory, Straub &Schweizer, into an international organisationwith 6,000 employees. Even in times of eco-nomic difficulty WMF has maintained its posi-tion with flexibility, and far-sighted businessdecisions, which have not been without risk.As a modern design conscious business theorganisation is well equipped for the future.

Jette Joop was born in Braun-schweig, Germany. She went toHigh School in Hamburg andfinished her schooling in Oxford,UK taking the International Bac-calaureate. She went on to studydesign at the Art Center Collegeof Design in California, USA andfinished with a “Bachelor of Sci-ence.” Having finished her studies,she went to work for Barry Kiesel-stein-Cord (among others) andlater for Polo Ralph Lauren inNew York. In September 1997, shefounded her own company, ‘JETTEGmbH’ with its headquarters inHamburg and Berlin.Since September 2003 Jette Joophas served as the Children’s Am-
