Do you understand the joke? If you’ve got bananas in your ears, you can’t hear anything so it doesn’t matter what you say!

Anything you like – he can’t hear you!

Bithi will be representing Bangladesh in a International Conference on Adolescent’s Policy Dialogue in Nepal organised by UNICEF.

Bithi is one of the first 17 students of JAAGO in a slum who dreams to become a doctor to serve her nation. Bithi’s father is a Rishshaw Puller who lives in Rayer Bazar. She never thought that such an opportunity will knock at her door.

Bithi will be one of the panellists for speaking about “successfully completing schooling and transition into labour market.” We hope that JAAGO will create more opportunities for the untouched one. Rifat BusRa

Frankenstein the monster is a creation of Victor Frankenstein, made by a number of old body parts and strange chemicals, and bought to life by a mysterious spark. He enters life eight feet tall and enormously strong but with the mind of a newborn. Left alone by his creator, he tries to introduce himself to the society, only to be ignored by everyone. Looking in the mirror, he realises the truth about his horrible appearance, a side of his character that blinds society to his gentle, kind nature. Seeking revenge on his creator, he kills Victor’s younger brother and after Victor destroys his work on the female monster meant to relieve the monster’s sadness, the monster murders Victor’s best friend and then his new wife. However the monster shows that he is not a purely evil being. He assists a group of poor peasants and saves a girl from drowning, but because of his obvious appearance, he is rewarded only with beatings and disgust. tahsin MoMin

Akhtar Ahmed is a Business Studies and Economics teacher for O and A level students who previously taught in Scholastica. When asked about his profession, he replied “I am not someone who simply teaches, but someone who inspires the students to give his/her best, in order to discover what they are really capable of.”

Aside from teaching, Akhtar loves to spend quality time with his son by going cycling, skating, fishing and swimming together. While teaching, he uses jokes in the classroom to make learning fun for his students.

Cherished memories in his teaching career: When my student Farhad got accepted into Oxford University, and when another student, Habib, achieved

the highest mark in the world after being taught by me.

Sad memory: The death of my student Nehal was really upsetting; he will never come late to class saying "Sorry Sir, I was playing Basketball.”

Top 3 enTries from our youngesT readersThe Doll1

I was frightened, my doll can talk! When someone comes to me the doll stops talking. I was frightened because the doll talked only with me. One day, I was having breakfast. The doll said, “Your school is closed.” I asked, “Why is my school closed?” Suddenly, my mother

came in and the doll stopped talking. I told my mother, school is closed. My mother was surprised and called my friend’s mother. My mother said, “Your school is open so get ready for school.” When I came back home from school, my doll was gone.

"Yippee! My daddy is going to take me to the adventure park!" Being joyous, I couldn't help dancing. I was on cloud nine.

Today in the morning my family and I set off for the A…D…V…E…N...T…U...R...E! As we reached our destination, I saw a poor girl without legs. I felt sorry for her and told my mother to lend me some money for the girl. Shortly after that, we got the tickets and went inside.

“Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet eating her curds and whey” – I just loved it! I was so amazed that I failed to follow my family on their way out. I was left alone. I began to look for them but they were nowhere to be found.

Out of nowhere … " screech screech" I heard a sound, which made my blood run cold.

I looked back but nobody was there."It's strange" I thought to myself. The same sound kept going off again and again and it was slowly fading away.

All of a sudden I saw the girl in front of me. Her eyes were red. Instead of tears, blood fell from her eyes; ferocious and wild. I was shaking all over. I started giggling to stop myself from feeling nervous.

In a split second, I took flight. No matter what, I had to beat it! I finally rescued myself and giggled as well to calm myself and feel less terrorised, PHEW!

When I hear strange noises in bed, I get spooked out. When I enter a dark room I feel an eerie presence. If I go to a new place, I feel a sense of discomfort. I don’t like it when strangers ask me questions. Being alone at the rooftop at night is

scary. Sometimes I feel scared when I do something that I have never done before. It is spooky when I stay overnight in my uncle’s house. This year when I saw the big cows at the ‘’gorur haat,’’ it was disturbing.

FAcTs AbouT bATsThe rustling of leaves, the midnight black and a pair of glowing eyes perched still outside your window sill. The nocturnal winged bat is here to give you the goosebumps!

1. Bats don’t have “fat days.” 2. The metabolism of a bat can be

envied – they can digest bananas, mangoes, and berries really quick.

3. Less than 10 people in the last 50 years are said to have contracted rabies from North American bats.

4. Due to the media, bats are thought to bring in germs and disease to innocent people.

5. Believe it or not, Bats avoid people as much as they can.

Have you ever had the fascination with magic that drives you to work on tricks just to see the look on the other person’s face? Well, this week we look into a super cool magic trick, which will leave the other person wondering before he knows what just hit him.

The trick involves the usage of a single random stick of crayon. What you have to do is place both your hands behind your back with the single crayon held into them. Basically it is a guessing game, where afterwards you have to

bring forward one of your hand onto your forehead and guess the colour of the crayon while the other hand is holding the crayon behind. Shocked! Aren’t you?

Well, the trick is very simple. When you have the crayon behind your back, scrabble off some of the crayon on your thumbnail and when you bring your hand to your forehead, the colour is revealed while the other person remain unnoticed. Do try it.

Halloween is right around the corner. Why not spread the mes-sage with a ghostly decoration? Spirit Jugs are easy to make and will give a creepy effect for the night. Here’s how you make them. Precaution: Adult supervision needed!

What you need• Plastic gallon milk jugs• Black permanent marker• Sharp knife• String of 50 clear low-

wattage lights

Directions1. Draw ghost faces of your

choice on the jugs with the permanent marker.

2. Ask a parent or older sibling to cut a coin sized hole under the jug.

3. Now connect all the jugs by putting a few bulbs inside them (like a long snake). Do NOT plug them in right away!

4. Ask your guardian to plug in the bulbs for you and watch the jug monsters come to life! Rad shaRaR Bin KaMal

Turn your black forest cupcakes into an actual forest by adding a few homemade cupcake toppers.

Ze Creepy Components• 2 1/8 cups all-purpose flour• 2 cups white sugar• 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa

powder• 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder• 3/4 teaspoon baking soda• 3/4 teaspoon salt• 3 eggs• 1 cup milk• 1/2 cup vegetable oil• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract• 1 can cherry topping (available at

retail stores)• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract• 3 cups heavy whipped cream• 1/3 cup confectioners’ sugar

Ze Terrorizing Technique1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175

degrees C). Grease and flour two 12-piece cupcake trays.

2. Combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla; beat until it is well blended. Pour batter into the prepared pans.

3. Bake for 35 minutes, or until the wooden toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool the cupcakes before you put any frosting.

4. Combine whipped cream, confectioner’s sugar and vanilla in a chilled, medium sized bowl. Beat with an electric mixer at high speed until stiff peaks have formed.

5. Make a hole in the centre of the cooled cupcakes by cutting out a disc of cake from each cupcake. Spoon in a bit of the cherry topping.

6. Use a piping bag or a large spoon

to frost the top of the cupcake. And finally, you can either spread or drizzle the chocolate ganache on top.

For toppings, you can make trees and marshmallow ghosts:For the trees, make cut-outs (preferably on harder paper, like chart paper or mount paper) of thin, dead trees. Colour them in black. Take a few toothpicks and colour them black as well, leave a little part on one end, uncoloured. Stick the cut-outs on the coloured end of the toothpicks, and push the uncoloured part into the cupcake. For the ghosts, take a few marshmellows. Wet your fingers in some water and then use your wet fingers to make arms and a head. Put a little bit of the chocolate ganache in a zip-lock bag and pipe in eyes, nose and round mouth.
