Many fanciers will know John Blizzard, this editions Breeder. John has been breeding ducks since 1994. His first pairs of duck came from Norm Parish in South Australia, they were Calls and Mallards. John keeps many types of waterfowl. His current collection includes Pekin, Rouen, Cayuga, Runners, Elizabeths, Calls, Black East Indian, Silver Appleyard and Mallards. Johns favourite breed is the Call duck. They are small, rare and a challenge

John started showing in 1996. He enjoys showing as it gives him the opportunity to meet different people, compare his birds and enjoy knowing that when he wins an award for one of his birds that his efforts are being recognised. How do you prepare your birds for show? For show and breeding, birds are moved from larger outside pens into a shed where there are 24 smaller pens, each being 2 m x 6 m. The ducks are kept on either sawdust or mesh to keep them clean. When preparing for show he only needs to check that they have clean bills and feet. What do you feed your waterfowl? Wheat during the off season and pellets during the show and breeding season. Johns hints for Beginners is to begin with one or two breeds and buy good stock to start with. John should be commended for his dedication and commitment to preserving some of the rarer waterfowl breeds in Tasmania.

How long have you been keeping fowls? I have been keeping chooks for 7 years since I was 4 years old. Dad gave me my first hen, a Coronation Sussex. How many breeds of fowls do you keep? I have 3 colours of Pekin Bantams. White, Black and brown–red. I also have White Wyandotte bantams and Australorp bantams. What is your favourite breed? White Wyandotte bantams What do you enjoy the most about keeping fowls? I enjoy breeding and raising chicks to expand the flock. What do you enjoy the most about showing fowls? I have a generally good showing record. One of my Black Pekin hens won Reserve at 2004 Bantam Club show, and a White Wyandotte pullet won best in Show at the 2005 Bantam Club Annual Show.

What do you do to get your fowls ready for show? The particularly good birds are selected from the shed, and put in show pens. Then I wash them, especially the Pekins. How do you dry your fowls if you have washed them? A towel is used first and then a hair dryer. I put them in boxes near the fire overnight.

Rare Breeds List for 2007

The Rare Breeds list will be revised for 2007. There is a sub-committee which will be reviewing the show entries across the state for 2006, to identify as close as possible what breeds are being shown and how many exhibitors we have for each breed. A revised list will be in the Tasmanian Rare Breeds Poultry Fanciers Association show guide 2007.
