Travels with Dalai By Daniel Glick is Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet, 14 th reincarnation of the Buddha of Compassion, head of the Tibetan government‐in‐exile, spiritual leader of six million Tibetans and reciepient of the Nobel Peace Prize, still gets handled like diplomatic dynamite after 36 years inexile. Arriving in Atlanta from Frankfurt in early September to begin a high‐profile, high‐ stakes U.S. political tour, the Dalai Lama’s tiny entourage deplanes directly onto the airport tarmac and is met by a decidedly low‐profile, low‐key welcoming committee. U.S. immigration officials do extend the Dalai Lama a form‐free entry. But since any governmental pomp accorded to His Holiness would send the Chinese leadership into a froth, the usual red carpet reserved for visiting heads of state is conspicuously absent. Today, even orchestrating the official Tibetan reception is problematic. Rinchen Dharlo, the Dalai Lama’s representative to the United States, can’t get past airport security at the gate to greet the Dalai Lama. Dharlo and an aide remain separated from His Holiness by a secured door and a picture window, furiously waving a ceremonial white scarf to attract the Dalai Lama’s attention. H
