A single card for the public transport in the Netherlands

TheOV-chipkaartwillsoonbetheonlyvalidpublictransportticketfortheentireDutch

publictransportsystem.Forthetram,train,busormetro.Thisfolderprovidesinformation

onhowtousetheOV-chipkaart.

Four stepsFour steps are important when travelling using the OV-chipkaart:

Step 1: Select your OV-chipkaart

Twotypesofcardsareavailable:apersonalOV-chipkaartandananonymousOV-chipkaart.

ThepersonalOV-chipkaartwillgiveyouthemostbenefits.TheanonymousOV-chipkaart

isagoodchoiceifyoudonottraveloften.Thefeaturesofbothcardtypesareprovided

below.YoudeterminewhichtypeofOV-chipkaartbestsuitsyourneeds.Afewofthepublic

transportcompanieswillstillofferseparatedisposabletickets,forexample,onthebuses

ortrams.Ingeneralthisoptionismoreexpensive.

You might not be aware you already have an

OV-chipkaart. Your NS season ticket (for example,

your off-peak discount pass ‘voordeelurenkaart’)

can also be used as an OV-chipkaart.

The OV-chipkaart logo is included on the smart

card to indicate this. You can top up any smart

card with the OV-chipkaart logo. Of course,

only at locations where the OV-chipkaart

has already been registered in the

company system.

Every NS (Netherlands Railways) season ticket holder already has an OV-chipkaart

• A‘travelproduct’.Atravelproductcan,forexample,beaseasonticketwhichisvalid

exclusivelyforaspecificroute.

Step 4: Check-out

Atyourdestinationyoucheckoutwhenyouexitthetransportmodalityyouhaveused.

Evenwhenyoutransferfromonemodalitytoanotheryouneedtocheckout.Youwillagain

checkinwhenyouusethenexttransportmodality.Followthesameproceduretocheck

outasyoudidtocheckin.Note:IfyouchangefromoneNStraintoanotherNStrainyou

donothavetocheckoutandcheckinagain.

What happens when you check out?Thesmartcardreaderdetermineswhetheryoutravelledusingatravelproductorusingthe

balanceontheOV-chipkaart.Ifyoutravelusing

thee-pursebalanceontheOV-chipkaartthesmart

cardreaderwillshowthecostofyourjourney.The

boardingrateminusyourtravelcostsispaidback

ontoyourOV-chipkaart.Donotforgettocheck

out!Ifyoudonotcheckout,thesystemcannot

reimbursepartoftheboardingrate.

The costs of your journeyTravellingwiththeOV-chipkaartis,onaverage,

notmoreexpensive.Thecostsarecalculated

differently.Youpayforthekilometresyouactually

travelandnotperzone.Theamountthepassenger

paysconsistsofthefollowing*:

• Abasicrate.Ifyoutransfertoanotherpublic

transportmodalitywithin35minutesafter

checkinginyoudonotpaythebasicrateagain.

• Youalsopayanamountperkilometre.The

rateperkilometrediffersperregion.The

regionalauthoritiesdeterminetheratefortheir

ownregions.

• Childrenfromtheageof4throughto11and

seniorcitizenswhoareolderthan65travelat

adiscountrate(asbefore).Thediscountis

onlyappliedwhentravellingusingapersonal

OV-chipkaart.

Step 3: Check in

YoushouldalwayscheckinandoutwhentravellingusingtheOV-chipkaart.Thesystem

registerswhereyouboardandwhereyouexitanddeterminesthecostofthejourney.

Check-inasfollows:

• HoldtheOV-chipkaartinfrontoftheOV-chipkaartlogo(thehandwithacard)onthe

smartcardreader.

• Youwillhearabeepandthegreenindicatorwilllightup.

• Thedisplayshowsatextsuchas:Goedereis(Haveanicejourney!).

• Ifyoucheckinatanaccessgate,thegatewillopen.

Areyoutravellingwithothers?Everypassenger

requirestheirownOV-chipkaart.Ifyouare

travellingwithchildrenandyouarepassingthrough

accessgates,thechildrenwillhavetopassthrough

thegatesonebyone.Awidergatewillalwayshave

beeninstallednearstandardaccessgates.Make

sureyoudonotholdthecardinfrontofthereader

twicebecauseyouwillnotonlybecheckinginbut

alsocheckingout.Ifaninspectorchecksthetickets

andyouarenotcheckedinyouwillbefined!

What happens when you check in?YourOV-chipkaartischeckedwhenyoucheckin.If

yourcardincludesavalidtravelproduct,itisused

forthejourney.Ifnot,youwillpayforthejourney

withthee-pursebalanceontheOV-chipkaart.The

boardingratewillbetemporarilydeductedfrom

theOV-chipkaartbalance.Thejourneycostsare

settledagainstthisboardingratewhenyouexit

thetransportmodalityyouhaveused.Youcannot

travelifthebalanceisanegativeamount.Youneed

totopupthee-pursebalanceoftheOV-chipkaart

beforeyoucantravelusingthecard.
