HI S T O R Y/Delft is the city of Delft Blue, William of Orange, Johannes Vermeer and technology. It is an innovative city with a historic city centre. There are few cities in the Netherlands whose medieval structure has been preserved so well over the centuries. The historic city centre with its authentic canals and old churches is small and easy to walk.

C I T Y R I G H T S/The area in which Delft is located was once a wild fenland area. Reclamation of this part of the fenland probably began in the Middle Ages, at the start of the 11th century, with digging the Schie and Delf: what is now Oude Delft. The Count of Holland at that time established a court at Delf, around which a settlement arose. In 1246, Count William II granted city rights to Delf, which was still a small settlement at that time.

The city was later enlarged several times, the last in the year 1355. It is highly likely that a ‘t’ was added to the name Delf as part of the local dialect, resulting in the present-day use of the name Delft. The city rights were of great importance for the development of the city, partly because they allowed it to become self-governing, exercise jurisdiction and even control trade and levy excise duties.

13

T R A D E/Delft was a city in which trade flourished. It was a market place for products from the surrounding countryside. The butter was especially famous. A second important product was beer. The water was not potable, but it was highly suitable for brewing good beer. Beer, with a small amount of alcohol that killed bacteria, was much ‘healthier’. By around 1600, Delft has two hundred breweries that worked not only for the local market but also exported.

The textile industry was also very important for the Delft economy. In 1389, Delft was allowed to build a seaport for trade: Delfshaven. It was connected to the Schie by a newly dug canal. Later, in the 17th century, Delft became world famous for its Delft Blue pottery.

D I S A S T E R S/Delft was hit by a number of disasters. In 1536, a city fire reduced two-thirds of the buildings to ash, including a large part of the town hall and the main churches. In 1618, the town hall burned down again, after which Hendrick de Keyser designed the current building. The part of the Town Hall that did not burn down: the stone tower known as Het Steen, was constructed around 1200 and is probably the oldest building in Delft.

Together with Johannes Vermeer, Pieter de Hooch (1629-after 1684) is considered to be among the most important Delft masters of the Dutch Golden Age. His paintings are popular throughout the world and attract many visitors to the museums where they can be seen. De Hooch is active in Delft in a period where local painting flourishes and numerous important artists like Paul Potter, Jan Steen and Carel Fabritius are active. The artistic rivalry stimulates important artistic innovations in terms of perspective, space and light.

Pieter de Hooch used these artistic impulses in his paintings of daily life in Delft's houses and their inner courtyards. In a home setting, we usually see women, sometimes with their children, who are busy with their daily work. With warm colors, exciting perspectives and a natural incidence of light, De Hooch creates an atmosphere that is considered characteristic of painting in Delft.

With his paintings De Hooch is a great inspiration for his Delft colleagues like Johannes Vermeer, Cornelis de Man and Hendrick van der Burch.

De Hooch makes his most beautiful paintings during the period he works in Delft. Museum Prinsenhof Delft is going to bring back these Delft masterpieces to the city where they were created. For the first time, an exhibition is being organized in the Netherlands about the work of De Hooch. Thanks to this high-quality and surprising exhibition, visitors will get the unique opportunity to enjoy the sophisticated and atmospheric work of De Hooch, which will be brought to Delft from all over the world for this special occasion.

The exhibition will show not only the most beautiful works from De Hooch's oeuvre, but also the important relationship between the painter and the city of Delft. Besides seeing the exhibition, the visitor will also be able to walk in the footsteps of De Hooch in the beautiful historic city of Delft. The whole city will therefore be celebrating the homecoming of Pieter de Hooch!

O O S T P O O R T/ The beautiful Oostpoort (East Gate) is the only remaining city gate of Delft and undoubtedly one of the most attractive photo opportunities for your Delft photo album. The Oostpoort (East Gate) was created around the year 1400, when a city wall with eight gates was built in Delft. The gates were the only entrances to the city to ensure that Delft was well defended against intruders and enemies. This is also the reason that William of Orange chose Delft as his residence in 1572.
