Colonial Zone · Erected in the early 1500s by

Christopher Columbus’s brother Bartholomew, and

his son Diego, this area is substantially intact with

many original buildings.

Columbus Lighthouse · Built in 1992 to commemorate

the 500th anniversary of Columbus’s discovery of the

New World, this massive structure is 46 meters high

and shaped like a cross. Equipped with a mammoth

lighting system, the structure projects a beam every

night that reaches nearly 44 miles.

Plaza de la Cultura · many of Santo Domingo’s

museums are located in this Cultural Park, including

the National museum of History and Geography and

the museum of Natural History.

Museum of Modern Art · Works by the finest

Dominican visual artists of today are on display in

Museum of Dominican Man · This anthropological

museum boasts a large and fascinating collection of

pre-Colombian artifacts.

National Aquarium · This open-air designed aquarium

is, in essence, a huge fish tank with a Plexiglas tunnel

running through it. This allows visitors to feel as if

they’re submerged beneath the sea in the company of

over 250 marine species, 2,000 specimens in all.

National Botanical Gardens · A display of over 300

orchid species is just one of the delights to be found

at this 445-acre site, the largest botanical garden in the

Caribbean. It also features a Japanese garden, plant-

filled pavilions and a natural riverbed.
