Tourism AtlantisThe well known Atlantis Resort attracts thousands ofvisitors each year and employs over 6,000 Bahamians. There are several resorts on the island that helped build athriving tourist industry including Sheraton, Wyndham, andSandals.Currently under construction Baha Mar will be a megahotel and will bring 1,700 new jobs upon opening.Baha Mar 5. Commercial FishingIn the 19th century cotton after many years was no longer a profitable endeavor. As aresult sponge became the new booming business until a fungus decimated the spongeindustry.Following the devastation with the loss of the sponge revenues the local turned to thesea once again and became commercial fisherman. Located on the back of Fort Fincastle Carved by slaves from 1793-1794 with axes and sharp hand tools. The island is full of history that includes stories of native Indians, monarchies, slaves,and pirates. Lucayan Indians were among the first settlers 1700-1718 the island was governed by Pirates The new governor agreed to pardon most pirates who ceased their operations. Black Beard was among the few pirates not offered a pardon and escaped the island. 18th Century American Loyalists settled on the island with their slaves. 8. Nassaus electric culture has had many influences from India, Europe, Africa and manyother parts of the world.One very important Christmas tradition is called Junkanoo. The festivals origins can betraced back to Africa.The festival, which now celebrates freedom, is an explosion of colors and music. 9. The local cuisine is as influenced as the culture.Many local favorites are cooked in a single pot and made using ingredients that arereadily available such as fresh fish.Fish, shellfish, and beans are staples in the Bahamian diet.Spices and rubs used in the cuisine vary from curries, thyme, coconut milk andhot peppers.A typical breakfast for a native in Nassau consists of strewed fish, Johnnycakesor boiled fish on top of grits.
