Nassaus electric culture has had many influences from India, Europe, Africa and many other parts of the world.
One very important Christmas tradition is called Junkanoo. The festivals origins can be traced back to Africa.
The festival, which now celebrates freedom, is an explosion of colors and music.
Island Culture
The local cuisine is as influenced as the culture.
Many local favorites are cooked in a single pot and made using ingredients that are readily available such as fresh fish.
Fish, shellfish, and beans are staples in the Bahamian diet.
Spices and rubs used in the cuisine vary from curries, thyme, coconut milk and hot peppers.
A typical breakfast for a native in Nassau consists of strewed fish, Johnnycakes or boiled fish on top of grits. Lunch is likely to be curry chicken or fish.
