With its untouched natural beauty and sprawling valley views,

Kodaikanal, a small town nestled in the hills of Tamil Nadu, is

almost picture-perfect. Last Saturday, after a super duper early

morning flight to Madurai, followed by a three hour long car ride

through winding mountains to reach Kodaikanal, I was greeted by

refreshingly chilly weather and a cozy hotel which over looked an

expansive lake. I was so glad to have finally made it here,

approximately fifteen hundred kilometers away from home. Words

cannot explain how much I needed this break from the hustle and

    bustle of the city.

A quick snooze later, we rented some bicycles and headed out to

the main street called P.T. Road. I had read so much about an

eatery called Cloud Street Caf, and was dying to check it out. After

asking almost a hundred people for directions (it seemed like the

ocals were not very familiar with the English street names), we

finally located it and ran up the narrow stairs, to be greeted by a

pleasant British lady and her adorable little son running around the

place. I quickly decided on the wood-fired bacon, ham and sausage

pizza and wow, words cannot do justice to how delicious this was.

My mouth is watering as I type this.

f you ever have the pleasure of visiting Kodaikanal, you simply

must make time for a lunch at Cloud Street Caf. You will thank me

ater, I promise. After a stroll down the rest of the street, where we

stopped to purchase a summery dream catcher and chat with the

owner of a small handicraft shop called The Stage, we decided to

pick up a few bottles of Port Wine and call it a night.

Sundays are meant for sleeping in and that is exactly what we did

the next day. We sauntered out of the hotel well after noon, and

decided to scout out a new lunch spot. We completely missed out

on the fact that there is a market every Sunday, where the locals

can purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, along with other

miscellaneous items, so almost all of the eateries were shut, save

one. The entrance to Abbys Caf is a narrow one, but once you are

up, you are greeted by warm wooden interiors and quirky artwork

on the walls. We ordered a hearty feast jalapeno nuggets, nachos,

a falafel sandwich, burritos and a brownie with ice cream, and

played a game of chess as we waited for the food to arrive.

We spent the rest of the day lazily walking around, soaking in the

greenery and atmosphere. Somewhere along the way, we stopped

at an artifact shop called Danish Display, where I picked up jasmine

scented handmade soap, a natural loofah and a cute necklace

made from precious blue stones. On the bike ride back to the hotel,

we discovered an amazing tea lounge called the Tredis Tea Room,

and stopped to sample the lip smacking Forest Fruit tea, which

came with delicious strawberry undertones. Just the perfect kind of

    Sunday.

Mondays are always the most hectic, and somehow, this turned out

to be true on vacation as well. We woke up extra early to make time

for breakfast at the Tredis Tea Room couldnt get enough of this

place! Our morning feast consisted of a cheese omelet, baked

beans, toast and sausages, followed by the Forest Fruit tea again.

    Best start to the day.

Our guide picked us up from here at around 9am and we headed

for a tour of the Berijam Lake, one of Kodaikanals prized

possessions. Only twenty five cars can get permission to enter the

ake area in a day, so you have to ensure that you sort out the

necessary permits well in advance, preferably through a local. The

entire tour took about three hours, with many pit stops to admire

the swooping valley views and serenity which engulfs the lake

district. I had the best time just sitting on the edge of the cliff in

comfortable silence. You could probably walk for hours and not

hear a thing. It was beautiful. From here, we headed on a trek to

Dolphins Nose. It is a literally a rock jutting out in the middle of a

valley which looks like the nose of a dolphin. You can walk all the

way to the edge of the rock, but one slip of the foot and you are

history. Freaky, freaky. I was completed exhausted after the trek,

which speaks volumes about how terrible my fitness level is right

now. Something to work on this year, perhaps?

We were famished after the tiring trek, so our guide dropped us off

at Potluck Caf on P.T. Road, where I wolfed down a plate of

pancakes with honey and some so-so orange slush. We decided to

call it a day and headed back to the hotel for some room service

and wine. Given the physical exhaustion, I had the best sleep that

    night.

The following day, our last day in Kodaikanal, was a glazy one. For

those of you who dont know, good + lazy = glazy. Room service for

breakfast consisted of mushroom soup and a massive chicken

sandwich which I couldnt finish. After the necessary packing and

hotel duties, we headed out to Cloud Street Caf to indulge in the

delicious pizza one last time, and yet again, it was out-of-this-worldamazing. I really wish I could steal the recipe and recreate it in the

Bay, but I am sure it wouldnt taste half as good without the cold

weather and the simplicity of its hometown. As we boarded a bus

that night to embark on our next adventure, I couldnt help but feel

a little sad, and hope that I have the good fortune to visit again. I

suppose this was a gentle reminder that I need to unplug and soak

n the beautiful world around me more often.

So where did we head next, you ask? That, my friend, is a tale for

    another time.

    Until then,

Shradha, great post that you have written and Kodaikanal

is definitely a place to just unwind and relax, forget all

After reading this post I believe Cloud Street Caf should

send you their delicious pizza. Well your account and

photos does add to your claim on Quora that Kodaikanal

is pretty surreal. Now regarding the trek, Id say you do

need to work out on it or else how are you ever gonnatrek the mesmerizing and mighty Himalayas (Assuming
