5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Going to Indonesia

ADDICT TO TIPS

Indonesia is a huge, mysterious archipelago of disparate islands and cultures. It is impossible to summarise. With over 238 million

people, it is the 4th most populous nation on earth. Travel opportunities are many and various. Sparkling seas teeming with life, soaring

volcanoes, never-ending coastline and cultural wonders all await the intrepid traveller. Here, there even be dragons!

1.) Indonesia is more of a continent than a country

Indonesia is big. Very big. It covers a territorial area of over 5

million square kilometers. Look at it on the map and you will

see that the distance between Banda in the west and Irian

Jaya in the east makes it as wide as South East Asia itself.

It is so big that any consideration of the land, the population,

the geography, the marine life, the cuisine, the religious

beliefs and the economy of Indonesia can only be done by first

separating it into its regions.

2.) The population is incredibly diverse

With a country so enormous, it is no wonder that there is

a wide spread of people. However given the landmass is

fragmented into so many islands, the diversity of the people

should come as no great surprise. However, it is endlessly

surprising. If you put into a room a typical Jakartan, a Bajau

from Sulawesi, a Papuan and a Timorese you wouldn’t believe

they all live under the one flag.

3.) Some flavours may not be your cup of tea

Coffee and tea are big in Indonesia with some of the coffee

from Java, Aceh and Sumatra gaining a reputation worldwide.

Most unusual is probably the very expensive Kopi Luwak

whose beans must go through the intestines of Asian

Palm Civets to have removed the bitterness. From this

faeces comes coffee that sells for a fortune in Europe and

elsewhere. So ‘it’ not only happens. It sells.

4.) Indonesia is at the heart of the world’s marine

biodiversity

The coral triangle, the world’s most bio-diverse region of sea

includes Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon islands,

the East of Borneo and the Philippines. Mostly that means

Indonesia. It is believed this is where life in the sea began.

It is home to 76% of the world’s coral species , 37% of the

world’s fish species and a high level of endemism. It is little

wonder that so many places in Indonesia are of interest to

conservationists and scuba divers alike; places such as

Bali, Raja Ampat, Komodo and North Sulawesi.

5.) The Spice islands of Indonesia were once traded for New

York

In 1667 the Treaty of Breda was signed, bringing an end to

Dutch - English hostilities over the coveted Spice islands

in Indonesia’s Banda Sea. It transpired to be a hugely

significant moment in history, as the agreement was based

around a property swap of the then English Run Island with

the then Dutch New Amsterdam - Manhattan, New Jersey and

Delaware Estuary. So New Amsterdam became New York.

One of the secrets of visiting Selayar is discovering how to get there. The very fact it takes nine bumpy hours

overland to reach this unspoilt, idyllic, tropical sea gypsy paradise, makes this little known tucked away treat in

the South of Sulawesi a pleasure. Places that are this far removed from the trappings of mainstream tourism lead

you on a discovery: an adventurous travel experience that is truly unique.

Selayar Island is eighty kilometres long and teeming with rainforest, white sandy beaches and sits in the Asian

coral triangle. The clear blue waters and scattering of twenty-one small islands and atolls make for perfect

snorkelling and diving opportunities, opening up a world of colourful corals, huge sponges, sea fans, turtles,

dugongs, rays, tuna, parrot fish – the variety and proliferation of this underwater sea adventure is virtually

unsurpassed in the world.

Getting There

Where to Stay

Annual Event of Takabonerate Island Festival

If the nine-hour journey overland by car and local ferry

sounds a little too challenging, there is an alternative. There

is a direct flight, which takes 45 mins from Makassar to

Selayar. SMAC is an air charter service and operates this

route. On boarding the plane each passenger is handed

a pilot-like headset with huge orange earmuffs. This

definitely helps to soften the deafening sound of the noisy

twin propeller plane. The Internet states, “SMAC air has

no scheduled services”, so it’s safe to say it’s unreliable.

Travelers have to book a flight well in advance and even then

there is no guarantee that SMAC will hold the seat.

The airport strip on Selayar sits between the main town

of Benteng and a series of small stilted villages. The runway

is part of the main road which links village to village and

when a plane is due (three times a week at present) a red fire

truck can be seen hurtling out on the runway, siren blaring

alerting all motorbikes, cars and trucks that a plane is coming.

This is really not a problem because the propeller plane is

deafeningly loud. The real purpose of the shiny red fire truck’s

warning system seems to be a noise alert to clear the goats

off the runway.

If you want a canopy of coconut palms, a pure white sandy

beach and a hammock, then sunset can be viewed from a

delightful spot, The Selayar Island Resort, only nine kilometres

from Benteng. The resort features beautifully appointed

beachfront bungalows and runs small group dives for entry

level beginners through to advanced, technical dives. The open

plan restaurant offers both Indonesian and international cuisine

served with a warm smiles in a comfortable, friendly and very

casual atmosphere. At sunset, it is a pleasure to watch the

evening sky dance with the orange and red hues, then as full

bodied as your signature “sunset sangria cocktail”, you can

sit back and watch the sky deepening into a blend of rich reds

and vivid purples. As the sun drops behind the horizon it is a

sensational moment to savour - of blending of the colours of

nature.

Selayar Island has hosted the The Takabonerate Island

Expedition since 2009. The festival is held in October every

year. Highlights of the festival includes an International

Fishing Competition (open to everyone), a Cultural Festival

featuring music and dance from the 23 different regencies of

Sulawesi and an Underwater Exhibition, including 300 naval

divers competing in technical dive techniques. The lasting

memories of spending time in Selayar Island, a charming

friendly and remote place will live with you, every time you

close your eyes.

TREASURE

CUBADAK ISLANDTHE PARADISE OF THE SOUTH

This one of the nature concealed beauties of Indonesia’s treasure is completely surrounded by a coral reef and in

the sea live innumerable varieties of coloured reef fishes. As the distance between the island and Sumatra is only

a few miles, it is completely free of waves which is quite heavenly leisure on earth.

FACE

Siti Latifah Herawati DiahSpecial envoy in Culture and Tourism

Q: Problem of tourism in Indonesia often makes us, as

people who are active in tourism sector, very tired. And

how do you think about it as a person who is active in

conserving Indonesian cultures? What kind of challenges

you are facing in managing the foundation which is

engaged in Indonesia’s culture partners?

A: I’m actually a nationalist that means that I have desire

and am willing that my country is known in the worldwide

so that it can attract many tourists from overseas coming

to Indonesia. Then, I have also been interested in tourism

sector when I accompanied my husband in Bangkok, as

the ambassador of Thailand in the 60’s. Indeed, Thailand

is an interesting country with its temples and the coastal

town Puket but Indonesia, in fact, more interesting. As you

know, we have a lot of interesting places and cultural traces

to visit than Thailand. When I have lived in Thailand in

1964-1965, I saw there were many tourists from American,

Australia visiting Thailand. I wondered how it could

happen. Apparently Thailand already had hotels to stay

meanwhile Indonesia were still busy by building Hotel

Indonesia. In one week you can see and visit all tourist

places in Thailand. After coming back from Thailand I was

more and more interested in advancing tourism sector in

Indonesia. By that moment, my husband and I had a big

house in Jakarta which was located on intersection that we

finally decided to renovate and use it as a hotel named Arya

Duta. It was the first hotel considered as the best one by

Indonesian people. Thus, I concluded that infrastructures

really have important role-play in our tourism so we can

compete with Thailand and other countries.

Q: What was the first viewpoint made you and your

friends found this culture partners foundation?

A: Our will to conserve Indonesian cultures have made

us found this foundation. By protecting our culture it

can attract tourists to visit Indonesia which has influence

over our national cultures. Thus, don’t let us have no our

own traditional clothes and be unable to appreciate the

cultural heritage etc. So, the founders are Rahmi Hatta,

Yati Sulaiman, Rita Abdurrahman, Iwan Tirta and some

other friend and I. We all are in a group of eight. We used

to having a form of protecting the Indonesia culture that

was Seni Budaya Indonesia / Indonesia Art and Culture

but it doesn’t exist anymore. We also have another form

that is now called Lingkar Budaya Indonesia / Indonesia

Band of Cultures. Lingkar Budaya is formed by the Late

Fuad Hasan, Prof Tuti Herati, Prof Eddy Sediawati, Drs

Nunu Supardi, Avi Arifin Siregar, Susrina Sanyoto S, Nani

Sutrisno, Djaffar Assegaf. It is different with Mitra Budaya

/ Culture Partners. Culture Partners has some programs

such as, organizing events at the Temple of Borobudur but

in Lingkar Budaya we have another goal, it is urging the

government to separate culture with tourism.

Q: Why has it to be separated?

A: In the past culture used to be under Ministry of Culture

and Education. That was just right. But culture and tourism

are now under one department. That is Ministry for Tourism

and Culture. We think the minister just focuses on tourism.

He pays less attention for culture sector. Therefore we urge

the government to consider separating it. Well, tourism is

different with culture. Tourism is to selling and culture is to

conserve and protect. But, anyhow, from culture sector you

can also sell it that called arts. Such as art of painting, art of

dancing, sculpture, local languages, soap opera, etc.

Q: How far is your effort to separate the two sectors?

A: So far we have sent mails to the President, MPR /

People’s Consultative Assembly and others, such as political

parties. Some political parties agree to separate it but some

don’t. However, I think culture is more important than

tourism because Indonesia has more culture traces than

tourism.

Q: Not without the point of view of tourism that also

related to culture, what has to do to push our culture coming

to the surface considering that the culture, by the present, is

ground down with acculturation and globalization?

A: So, at first infrastructures must be provided well and

facilities are available as well, such as clean restrooms, hotels

for example; hotel in Komodo Island. So far I knew the

related parties show less interest in that matter. As you

know, with all of that we can attract tourists easily to come

to Indonesia.

Q: As we know, conserving cultures is part of tourism

and can become one of cultural tourism destinations. So,

what do you think to organize it better and make it more

attractive for tourists? What has to do?

A: A lot of efforts we have done for it, also done by group

of film artists and culture artists and they still have a

participation in protecting and introduce the cultures, such

as introducing our traditional puppets (wayang orang,

wayang kulit, wayang kulit). Therefore, we must appreciate

their efforts who introduce it to the International. What is

more there is a gamelan group whose players are westerners.

It is one of efforts of making our culture more attractive

besides infrastructures.

Q: Once again to make it clear, why has culture to be

separated with tourism?

A: Because it is just different and from the beginning we

have founded this foundation is to focus on culture sector

which has more aspects to conserve and protect and also has

influence on tourism sector.

ETIHAD AIRWAYS NAMED“MIDDLE EAST’S LEADING AIRLINE”

The ceremony took place at the Armani Hotel Dubai in the Burj

Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, setting the scene for a hugely

successful evening for Etihad. The Abu Dhabi-based airline also

received the Middle East’s Leading Airline First Class award, Middle

East’s Leading Cabin Staff award and Middle East’s Leading Airline

In-flight Entertainment award. Etihad Airways won four titles at the

annual World Travel Awards ceremony for the Middle East, held early

this month, including the coveted title of the Middle East’s Leading

Airline.

As voted by 213,000 travel industry professionals from around

the world, the World Travel Awards’ spotlight the best in travel

regionally and globally. Peter Baumgartner, Etihad Airways’ Chief

Commercial Officer, said: “It is truly an honour to win Leading Airline

for the Middle East. Our home market is extremely important to

Etihad, so I am especially pleased to be recognised by our guests

and peers from the region in this way.“We continually aim to deliver

exceptional service and superior product and to receive this award

demonstrates that the airline industry and our guests believe we are

consistent in doing so. I hope this award encourages more and more

customers to fly with the best.”

The award for Middle East’s Leading First Class Airline recognises

Etihad’s Diamond First class suites, which feature a luxurious Poltrona

Frau leather seat that converts to a fully flat bed, a large wood-

finished table, Arabic-styled sliding doors offering complete privacy,

a 23-inch personal entertainment screen, a personal wardrobe with

mirror, and four individual lighting options with dimmers, in-seat power

points and USBs. The First class cabin also includes a spacious and

comfortable changing room. The ‘Inspired Service’ concept was a

key reason behind Etihad winning the title of Middle East’s Leading

Cabin Staff. The concept was developed across all cabins to ensure

that each passenger receives a personalised and attentive service,

tailored to individual requirements, during the flight.

In what has been an exciting week for Etihad, the airline’s service

was also praised at the Business Travel Awards, where it received the

award for Best Cabin Crew. With this title win, Etihad is now the only

airline to represent the Middle East region in these categories at the

global World Travel Awards held in London later in the year, where

the best of the world compete.

The office, to be opened between June and September, will

focus on stimulating Indonesia outbound traffic to destinations

beyond Seoul by dangling various incentives. For example, if

an agent sends a group which comprises at least 80 per cent

Muslim travelers, KTO will give a subsidy of 10,000 won (US$8.90)

per person, which the agent can use for food or performance

expenses. Speaking to agents yesterday, KTO Singapore and

Indonesia director Steve Yong said: “Last year we saw a record

number of 95,239 arrivals (from Indonesia) or a 17% increase

over 2009.

This year, we are targeting to achieve 110,000 arrivals.

In terms of arrivals, Indonesia currently ranks fifth in South-east

Asia after Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia.

Young, however, projected that arrivals from Indonesia would

surpass those from Singapore in two to three years. The amount

Indonesians spend per visit is also higher than Singaporeans and

the Japanese, according to Young. He told to the press that

“With Indonesia’s economy growing more than six per cent last

year and this year, we see bigger potential for growth of the top

and middle-class travelers.”

The Visit Korea Committee is pushing ahead with an

ambitious plan to attract 10 million visitors in 2011 through the

The Visit Korea Committee Launches Korean Tourism Office in Jakarta

promotion of four special festivals to be held in conjunction

with regional governments nationwide. Periodic special sales

promotions targeting major markets such as Japan, China and

Southeast Asia are set to be rolled out as part of the event

promotions, utilizing the existing overseas networks of the Korea

Tourism Organization. Recently, Korea International Travel

Mart (KITM) has been successfully held on June 1st with travel

professionals from all over the world. As the 2nd of its occasion,

Korea International Travel Mart for this year has reaffirmed

its position as the springboard for promoting Korea tourism

products.

Throughout the duration of the Visit Korea Year Campaign

(2010-2012), the Visit Korea Year Committee is involved in joint-

marketing efforts with the organizing committees for such events

as the IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011, 2011 Formula

1 Korean Grand Prix, Jeju’s bid to become one of the New 7

Wonders of Nature, Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea and Pyengchang’s

bid to become an Olympic host in 2018. The synergy that

results from such collaborations, as well as the incentives and

promotions being offered are expected to play a large role

in creating worldwide awareness in Korea as an international

travel destination.

SOCIALIzE

Kylie Minouge’s The Aphrodite Tour Live in Jakarta, 27th June 2011 @ Sentul International

Convention Center, Indonesia.

After weeks of anticipation, I can say that the wait,

money, long drive and damn traffic were all worth it!

However this did not hinder the success of the show

in the least. I consider this a true testament to the

capabilities of Kylie as a performer. Famous for scene-

stealing costumes and themed acts, Ms. Minogue’s

Aphrodite tour did not disappoint. Ascending from the

floor in the aforementioned clam shell, Kylie opened

with the title track from her 2010 album, “Aphrodite.”

Her screaming fans smiled adoringly as she embraced

her inner goddess. She went on to cover “The One”

and ”Wow” from her last studio album, X. Only Kylie can

grace the stage riding a chariot carried by six scantily

clad men singing “I Believe In You.” And then Kylie

turned up the heat with “Cupid Boy.” Wearing a Moulin

Rouge-inspired black feather gown and top hat, she

played to her gay fan base with aerial cupids flying.

She continued with her back-up singers with-”Spinning

Around”. Then she pulled out the chairs for mimic the

video choreography of her smash dance hit, “Get Outta

My Way” Such a blast, Ms. Minogue. She knows how to

pull out all the stops. Other favorite moments included a

slowed down, sexy rendition of “Slow,” off Body Language.

Kylie is surrounded by her burlesque female dancers

and feather fans. So sultry and sexy until she kicked it

up a notch to a throbbing dance beat. More hotness

followed with “Confide In Me” and ”Can’t Get You Out of

My Head” and “In My Arms”. But it was “Looking For an

Angel” off Aphrodite that got me excited, including three

hot angels (aka male dancers) who ascend from behind

the stage and I loved it.

Rounding out the night, she performed “Love at First

Sight” mashed up with “Can’t Beat the Feeling” and her

only ballad of the night, “If You Don’t Love Me - Slightly

pandering I think as it triggered, “Kylie, we love you!” from

everyone in the hall. Toward the end, Kylie loosened up

and appeared with Big blond hair, Daisy Dukes and coat that

looked like vintage Muppet.“Better the Devil You Know”

pursued, and then it was request time. “The Locomotion”

I definitely felt lucky and really interact with the crowd.

Before the encore, she got everyone’s hands up with her

latest single,”Put Your Hands Up (If You Feel Love)”. I felt

the love. She returned with my favorite Kylie song, “On a

Night Like This”. She ended it with the sensual and sexual

hits “All The Lovers”.

Notes: Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the concert

for me was to learn just how great of a stage performer Ms.

Minogue really is. She was completely in her element on

the stage, not only in terms of executing positioning and

choreography, but in addressing the audience and making

them feel included. She would constantly request that the

house lights be turned on so she could scope out the crowd

and she seemed so genuinely happy that so many fans turned

out for what must have been a big gamble of a show on her

team’s end.

Overlooking the South China Sea, 61 luxuriously appointed

villas are built into the forested slopes above a secluded bay. All

villas feature a king-sized four-poster bed, ensuite bathroom and

sunken baths. Each Pool Villa is equipped with a private sundeck

and swimming pool that overlook the sea.

Banyan Tree Bintan Situated at Tanjong Said on a secluded

bay on the northwest tip of Bintan island, Indonesia, about

45-minutes from Singapore or Batam via high-speed catamaran/

Ferry, followed by a 10-minute drive to the resort.

Natural Inspired by the traditional fishing villages on Bintan

island, villas are built on stilts. Rather than protecting them from

the sea, these stilts preserve the towering 100-year-old trees

lining the hillside promontory, as well as big boulders on the

rugged coastline. As a result, villas soar above the ground on

platforms, giving a delightful tree-top experience as well as an

invaluable experience being closer to nature. For more info dial:

Club Med Bintan Island a Jewel dedicated to

Golf & Relaxation

of Bintan, is set against a backdrop of white sandy beaches

and lush green palm trees on the warm water’s edge of

the South China Sea. This destination is perfect for a quiet

getaway, a romantic interlude, quality time with your family,

is Singapore’s closest attraction, Bintan, is the largest of 3,200

pure shapes, natural fibres and yet very modern design.”

With the Club Med concept, guests have the freedom of

doing almost everything on their holiday. Exciting sports and

recreational facilities are available for guests who enjoy active

sports such as archery, yoga, windsurfing and snorkelling. Club

Med also offers swimming and fitness facilities and its very own

private white sand beach to relax.
