Last month, Advanced Disposal honored many top employees at a celebration in Orlando. Our third annual Employee of the Year awards celebration recognized 2013 Employees of the Month for their commitments to clean communities, genuine customer care and teamwork and safety alongside their Advanced Disposal peers.

Nominees and their guests started their day with tickets to either Universal Studios or Islands of Adventure. After a day of thrill rides and excitement, all were welcomed with a lei ceremony, luau show and a special awards dinner at the Loews Royal Pacific Resort. Chairman & Chief Executive Officer Charlie Appleby and President & COO Richard Burke welcomed all attendees and thanked them for their hard work. Each nominee was announced and presented with a special nominee plaque and challenge coin.

Each year, we enjoy honoring our top employees for their hard work and dedication to making Advanced Disposal the best in our industry. These employees are our environmental heroes who are committed to clean communities and put their heart and soul into their work on a daily basis. It is because of these employees that we are the company we are today. They are truly the front line of Advanced Disposal and recognizing them at the Employee of the Year event is just a small way to say thank you for the big jobs they do.

Decatur Cooks for GoodAfter making a name for himself in an office chili cook-off, Valley View Landfill Site Manager Ken Wuehler was chosen to represent the division at the Central Illinois Regional Chili and Salsa Cook-Off sponsored by local Rotary clubs. Thirty-one cooks from Illinois, Kentucky, Iowa, Indiana, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and Arkansas took part in the eighth annual event at Hickory Point Mall in Forsyth, Illinois. While Ken did not take home a top prize, his efforts certainly were not in vain as money raised at the event benefitted local charities and Rotary projects.

“Our company is always trying to stay active in the communities that we service. We had a good time and plan to do it again next year,” said Municipal Marketing & Government Affairs Manager Ed Woker, who helped serve chili to attendees.

Taking a Load Off Cell 7B is open for business at Emerald Park Landfill in Muskego, Wisconsin. The newly permitted cell is ready to receive loads, despite any snowy conditions.

Educating Students – Our Future EnvironmentalistsThe second session of the EARTHCARE/Save the Bays Saturdays Environmental Education Program was recently held on Grand Bahama Island. Students were invited to learn about three types of pollution: air, water and ground. For the water pollution segment, students were welcomed to Advanced Disposal’s Pine Ridge Landfill and were given a tour by Landfill Manager Jason Albury. The tour was said to be the highlight of the students’ day.

RECYCLE THIS! Commodity of the Month: Batteries Batteries play a critical role in our society. We use them every day in our handheld electronics, like cellular phones, tablets and computers. They also power critical safety equipment used by the military, firefighters, police and hospitals. Batteries help offset the impact of power fluctuations and serve as lifesaving sources of energy during power outages.

All batteries contain heavy metals that react with electrolytes to produce power. These heavy metals (lead, mercury, nickel and cadmium) can be toxic to the environment when handled improperly. As a result, most states have laws that require battery recycling.

Battery recycling processes allow for the safe capture of heavy metals and recycling of the other components. To find a battery recycling outlet near you, check out www.Call2Recycle.org or your local government website.

Helpful Tip: A hot battery drains faster than a cool one. Don’t leave battery-powered items in the heat, and if your device is warm to the touch, it is running inefficiently.

Trivia Question: What are the two basic types of batteries?

Answer: There are two basic types of batteries: wet cell and dry cell. Wet cell batteries contain a liquid electrolyte, such as sulfuric acid, that reacts with heavy metals. Dry cell batteries contain a dry electrolyte and are considered safer, as they do not have the potential to leak a dangerous liquid.

Growing and Expanding

Caruthers Mill Landfill in Monroe, Georgia, has entered into Cell 2B. We began taking waste into the continuation of Cell 2 and plan to have adequate air space available for the next three years. We have been anxiously awaiting the opportunity to floor in this cell and have worked hard to ensure the transition has been a smooth one.

Moving from the top of the hill to the bottom, we relocated our shop, compressor and fueling station, which will make it much easier for the operators to perform day-to-day maintenance on machines. This move will also shorten our trip time on hauling cover material due to the close proximity of our borrow area. Our team will continue to work hard together, and we look forward to the rest of 2014 – what we expect to be our best year yet.

Powering through a “Polar Vortex” We all know the media likes to sound the alarms when the slightest threat of severe weather is possible. Unfortunately, in early January, they were spot on. Many of the areas we service had temperatures that hovered around -40° F with the wind chill.

As a good offense is the best defense, the management team (led by General Manager Cris Manley) in Rockford, Illinois, put together a plan to get their entire fleet indoors ahead of the expected temperature drop. Maintenance Manager Mike

Morey and Operations Manager Leroy Overturf called vendors looking for heated indoor space to park trucks and got a tremendous response. As a result of these efforts, our fleet fired up on that first frigid morning with no issues, and all of our customers received their normal service.

In Waunakee, Wisconsin, Fleet Manager Paul Carthew and Technicians Steve Halfpap and Jesse Walker started their shifts at 8 p.m. for three days straight. They worked through the night into late morning, keeping trucks running so the cabs were warm and the fluids wouldn’t gel. They also acted as first responders in the event drivers experienced any downtime.

The cold was business as usual for folks in Minocqua, Wisconsin, who deal with frigid weather every winter. They continued their practice of starting trucks early, made themselves available for employees working out in the cold, and kept hot chocolate and apple cider on hand.

Let’s Get Political!

Advanced Disposal’s South Region has found success in identifying and hiring talent from the political arena. When marketing Advanced Disposal and working to win new contracts, it is beneficial to have team members who understand and can navigate the political process. They need to have the personality to foster relationships with all types of individuals, whether they are elected

officials, city/county staff, community activists and even our own internal Advanced Disposal employees. Along with these qualities, they also need to have the work ethic, discipline and ability to multitask to last through hours and hours of council meetings to represent Advanced Disposal while juggling customer issues, community affairs, legislative needs and proposal development.

We are proud and honored to recognize several of our South Region employees who hold, or have held, elected positions in state and local government, along with others who aspire to serve their communities in political roles.

Steve Edwards, our Georgia Municipal Marketing and Government Affairs Manager, currently serves as Mayor of Sugar Hill, Georgia, after previously serving as a Council Member in Sugar Hill from 2003 to 2013. Steve also serves as Georgia Chapter Chairman of the National Waste and Recycling Association (NW&RA).

Brett Harrell, Atlanta Area Municipal Marketing and Government Affairs Manager, currently serves in the Georgia House of Representatives, Seat 106. He represents areas in unincorporated Gwinnett County and the cities of Snellville, Grayson, Norcross and Loganville, Georgia. Prior to his service in the State House, Brett served as a City Council member and Mayor of Snellville, Georgia, from 1999 to 2003.

Marcie Kreager, our Eagle Point Landfill Community Affairs Manager, previously served on the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners from 2001 to 2004 and remains very politically active in her home county.

Lynn Gowan, our South Alabama Municipal Marketing and Government Affairs Manager, is a former Montgomery County Commissioner. He served for 17 years and may re-enter the political arena to regain the seat that he once held in the near future. Lynn remains very active in local and state politics.

Gentry Shows, our South Region Municipal Marketing Manager, serves as Alabama Chapter Chairman of the NW&RA and previously served on the Industrial Development Board and the Parks & Recreation Board in his home city.

We encourage all our employees to get involved in their community and offer to serve others in multiple capacities. For elected officials, the pay is low and the hours are long, but the rewards are many (most of the time)!

Who knows who your next elected official may be? It could just be your garbage man or lady!

The Advanced Disposal – Tennessee hauling company had an eventful new year with the completion of the new office and shop on the Eco-Safe Landfill property. Prior to its completion, the hauling company had invaded the landfill’s operating space, from office space to finding a place for our mechanic to work on trucks to parking trucks. This effort was a four-

month project that could not have been completed so quickly without help from General Manager Charlie Appleby Jr.’s team. During this time, the landfill also began construction on Cell 1B due to the excellent growth accomplished in less than two years.

“Despite all the construction challenges on both sides, Charlie and I have worked hard to build a vibrant, hardworking team with an atmosphere that is infectious and motivational to others. We want the cohabitation of the landfill and hauling company to complement our growth efforts and show the community why Advanced Disposal is the number one partner of choice,” said Site Manager Justin Rodda.

The combination of the hauling company and landfill gives us a unique advantage over our competition in this market. With recent wins for the hauling company and landfill and with plenty more in the pipeline, the investment in the Tennessee and Virginia marketplaces is proving to be a great return on investment. The future is exciting and promising!

Breanna Ulrich is a Customer Service Representative for Advanced Disposal – Horicon, Wisconsin, and has been an Advanced Disposal employee for two years. Breanna was nominated for Employee of the Month due to her willingness to assist our customers in a timely and courteous manner. Breanna is a true professional who is dedicated to

our organization.

“Breanna’s dedication to serving our customers is a prime example of an employee who goes above and beyond to ensure every customer’s needs are handled. Breanna is truly an asset to the success of our customer care team,” said her supervisor.

Breanna and husband, Chris, have a dog, Macy, and a cat, Lilly. When she isn’t working or spending time with family, Breanna can be found shopping.

Tempie Christian is a Dispatcher for Advanced Disposal – Valdosta, Georgia. She has been an Advanced Disposal employee for eight years and has remained accident-, injury- and property damage-free during that time. Tempie was nominated for Employee of the Month because she always does what is necessary and is willing to exert the extra effort to get the job completed.

“Tempie is a valuable asset to the department and works well with all of her coworkers. She has a wealth of knowledge and experience and serves as a leader for her peers. She takes great pride in her job, which is reflected in her excellent productivity and quality results,” said her supervisor.

Tempie has two children, Jamecia and Jamius. She enjoys reading and spending time with her family.

Lisa Woodward is a Weighmaster for Advanced Disposal – Evansville, Indiana, and has been an Advanced Disposal employee for 16 years. She has remained accident-, injury- and property damage-free for two. She was selected for Employee of the Month due to the outstanding customer service she provides.

Lisa’s supervisor said, “Lisa takes great pride in her job. She is friendly and courteous and always willing to help the customers. She knows great customer care grows the business.”Lisa is married to John and has one daughter, Jessica. She is an avid NASCAR fan and enjoys going on walks with her dog and watching movies.

Curt Klaske is a Roll-Off Driver for Advanced Disposal – Omro, Wisconsin. He has been an Advanced Disposal employee for a year and a half and has remained accident-, injury- and property damage-free. Curt was selected for Employee of the Month because his customers really enjoy the work he does for them. He is polite and helpful and is extremely efficient with his roll-off truck. He is able to complete his workload in an

efficient manner, which allows him to assist other drivers when needed.

Curt’s supervisor said, “Curt is as easygoing as they come. He always has a smile on his face and a good joke to tell. He is a wonderful employee.”

Curt is engaged to Carrie and has two children, Joey and Jordan. In his free time, he enjoys scuba diving in the lakes in the Omro area, taking trips to Mexico to dive on reefs and shipwrecks, and camping with his family.

David Witherington is an Automated Side Load Driver for Advanced Disposal – Macon, Georgia. He has been an Advanced Disposal employee for 10 years and has remained accident-, injury- and property damage-free for eight years. David was selected for Employee of the Month because he is dependable and always willing to go the extra mile for his customers.

“I wish I had a million of him,” said his supervisor. “David has driven every type of truck we have and knows all the routes. He is a wonderful asset to our team.”

David is married to Laurie. In his free time, he rescues animals and takes care of them.

“Once a customer is assigned to John’s route, you can rest

assured they will receive great customer service in a timely manner. He always takes the time to introduce himself to the customer and make sure they are taken care of,” said his supervisor.John and his wife, Geraldine, have been married for 23 years. He has four children and eight grandchildren. When he isn’t working or with his family, he enjoys fishing for bass and catfish.

LUKE SHIELDS – MIDWEST REGIONLuke Shields is an Outside Sales Representative for Advanced Disposal – St. Paul, Minnesota. Luke was selected for the Midwest Region Trash Talker because he ended the month of January at 1,010% of monthly new net business goal.

MAURI ELLEDGE – SOUTH REGIONMauri Elledge is a Temporary Roll-Off Sales Representative for Advanced Disposal – Jacksonville, Florida. Mauri is nominated as South Region Trash Talker because she exceeded her temporary roll-off delivery goal by 440% with 335 new temporary roll-off deliveries.

SCOTT CURRIE – EAST REGIONScott Currie is an Outside Sales Representative for Advanced Disposal – Charlotte, North Carolina. He was selected for East Region Trash Talker because he ended the month of January with $14,800 in new net revenue.

Trash Talkers are top sales performers – one from each region – who have been selected based on net revenue sales, retention, closing margins and other qualifications determined by their supervisors. Congratulations to January’s Trash Talkers!

GOOD SAMARITAN NOMINEEMike Morey is a Maintenance Manager for Advanced Disposal – Davis Junction, Illinois. When recent cold temperatures reached -20° F, a car died in the middle of the highway not far from the Davis Junction location. The car sat disabled in the middle of the road, which took another driver by surprise. The driver of the approaching vehicle tried to swerve around the disabled vehicle, and the second car flipped into a ditch. Another employee mentioned the accident to Mike as he made his way into the office. Mike quickly jumped into his vehicle to drive out to the accident. He knew that even if

the person made it out of the flipped car, the freezing temperatures would cause more issues. Mike reached the accident and helped the driver into his vehicle to wait until an ambulance arrived to the scene. Thanks to Mike for his quick thinking and kind actions!
