Gautrain Rapid Rail Link South AfricaClient Guateng Provincial Government Consortium Bombela Concession Company

The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link is a state of the art dedicated rapid rail line between Johannesburg, Pretoria and OR Tambo International Airport, a fast growing region with increasing pressure on existing transportation infrastructure.

The project’s ten stations are linked by approximately 150 kilometres of rail. Aurecon was awarded Detail Design Package 6A, the main distinguishing aspect of which is the Viaduct V5c. This viaduct is the single longest viaduct on the project, founded on extremely difficult subsoil dolomite formations and situated in an urban environment.

The Gautrain project is set to play a pivotal role in the economic development of the Gauteng Province. Aurecon ensured the longest viaduct on the project met stringent safety, design and aesthetic requirements. Our bridge, geotechnical and road experts have helped devise a cost-effective, efficient and environmentally friendly transport solution for the most densely developed area in Gauteng.

Peninsula LinkAustraliaClient Abigroup

Peninsula Link is a new four lane 27 kilometre freeway, incorporating nine interchanges, eight other grade separations, 27 waterway crossings and a 25 kilometre shared use path. An Aurecon and Sinclair Knight Merz Design Joint Venture was appointed as principal design consultants for the project.

Traffic modelling software was used to significantly reduce the width of the structure and design optimised the road geometry, enabling the main nine span bridge structure to be reduced in area by over 30 percent, providing substantial cost savings. The team led a collaborative design process which reduced impact on an important, environmentally sensitive flora and fauna reserve, and restored the natural overland flow regime. This incorporated a fauna underpass to provide habitat movement beneath the freeway and allow for the creation of a habitat for a protected fish species.

Importantly, the works were designed for minimal maintenance intervention, providing a truly sustainable outcome.

Melbourne Metro Study AustraliaClient Victorian Government Department of Transport (DOT)

Aurecon, in association with Mott MacDonald, Sinclair Knight Merz and Grimshaw Architects, was appointed to the role of technical advisors for the development of concept designs for the Melbourne Metro rail tunnel. The scope of the study required route and station options to be identified and evaluated, including preferred route and station concepts to determine the project scope, risk, programme and cost estimate.

Key challenges included a complex integration with the existing network, planning of the underground station in a congested urban area and connectivity with other modes of public transport.

As lead technical advisors, Aurecon was responsible for the overall assignment management, site investigations, traction power, tunnelling, mined stations, tunnel ventilation, fire and life safety, track and alignment, signalling and the overall production of concept development reports.

Working in collaboration with the client, Aurecon prepared an interim submission to the Australian Government, detailing the economical, community and environmental benefits of the project.

Our expertise and industry knowledge have been developed on projects around the world, allowing our teams to develop detailed localised knowledge of the 80 plus countries in which we have worked.

Novo Rail - an alliance between RailCorp (owner partner and client), Aurecon, Laing O’Rouke and O’Donnell Griffin - will deliver an AUD 1 billion infrastructure upgrade programme of the Sydney rail network over five years. The alliance partners specialise in designing and delivering turnkey rail signalling, traction supply and multidisciplinary projects.

Today’s rapid growth in rail patronage means RailCorp must accelerate its investment programme to boost network capacity. The rail signalling and power systems are being upgraded to allow for the introduction of Sydney’s new Waratah trains.

A key feature of the delivery model is open-book transparency. Rigorous systems and processes ensure the committed and trusting involvement of alliance partners and RailCorp as client.

SH20 Waterview Connection New Zealand Client New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA)

Forming part of the Western Ring Route, New Zealand’s largest transport project, Aurecon was initially commissioned to prepare the procurement documentation for a competitive alliance tender, and to undertake a review of the concept design prepared for the Assessment of Environmental Effects for the connection tunnels and interchange package.

Following a gap analysis, Aurecon identified the need to undertake value engineering work. Several design optimisations were recommended, including reducing the tunnel diameter size and revising the fire and life safety strategy, resulting in significant budget savings.

NZTA subsequently engaged Aurecon as their Technical Advisor during the procurement process. Aurecon has since assisted with the introduction of three new aspects to their successful Alliance Contracting Model and is currently acting as the Owner’s Verifier to the NZTA for the delivery of the project.

In 2011 the project received a silver award of excellence at the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors Awards.

We strive for excellence in our client relationships and our project delivery, working in partnership with our clients to deliver innovative solutions. While our results and client satisfaction speak for themselves, we are proud to receive international industry recognition for our achievements.

A novel solution was needed to provide effective access for vehicles and pedestrians to the Green Point Stadium and the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town. Aurecon designed an elevated traffic circle with a pedestrian plaza underneath it to reduce vehicle and pedestrian conflict.

Archaeological monitoring was required for all excavations, due to the historical nature of the site. In addition, all of the existing road pavement and excavated materials were recycled and reused.

The works were carried out in a manner which ensured that all existing traffic flows were unhindered.

WinnerInfrastructure Partnerships Australia,National Infrastructure Awards 2011Category: Project of the YearGateway Upgrade Project Australia

The Gateway Upgrade Project involved the refurbishment of the existing bridge and the construction of a second, including a dedicated pedestrian and cycleway, the first of its kind in the world. The project included 12 kilometres of widening of existing dual carriageway and seven kilometres of a new six lane carriageway across derelict and swampy flood plains.

Aurecon undertook the Environmental Impact Statement and reference design, provided technical advice to the client during the design and construction management, procurement and evaluation, and subsequently undertook design review during delivery.

The project has delivered reduced travel and time and improved links for business, industry, tourism, cyclists and pedestrians.

Winner New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards 2011 Category: Building and ConstructionAir New Zealand Nelson Hangar New Zealand

Aurecon was the structural engineer for the hangar, a large 80 metre by 60 metre free span structural steel building with a clear height of 9.5 metres and overall height of 15 metres to the apex.

The roof structure was built on the ground with all cladding, insulation, lighting, heaters and cabling fitted at ground level. Following construction of the roof structure, the roof was jacked up onto concrete columns and the wall cladding finished. A joint free post-tensioned floor was then poured inside the closed in hangar.

Aurecon’s solution met the client’s size requirements, ensured a shorter construction period and allowed for cost savings due to the simple fabrication.

Australia

The BridgeWorks Alliance programme to extend the lifespan of the Sydney Harbour Bridge presented extensive and diverse project risks and demanded an uncompromising approach to quality. The bridge is both a heritage listed global icon and a critical artery in the Sydney transport network with intensive stakeholder interest.

As the lead designer on the BridgeWorks Alliance, which was formed to carry out the strengthening and upgrading works, Aurecon played a key role in the development of innovative solutions, implemented in an extremely constrained environment and with a unique approach to safety. These included an arch access system that allowed construction to proceed without any unplanned delays to stakeholders, as well as the installation of two underdeck gantries (each the size of an Olympic swimming pool) for construction access.

“ This high profile works was impressively completed with much efficiency and client focus. Relationships across the whole project were very strong.”
