Transport Issue

Transport Issue

TransportationTransportation has become the backbone of accessibility systems. It is also a crucial part of economic growth and social interaction in most countries.

Unfortunately, the adverse effects of transportation have a greater impact on the natural and human environment than two other important mechanisms for providing access: proximity and telecommunications.

Air Pollution Transportation involves the combustion of fossil fuels to produce energy translated into motion. Air pollution is created from incomplete carbon reactions, unburned hydrocarbons or other elements present in the fuel or air during combustionThese processes produce pollutants of various species, including carbon monoxide, soot, various gaseous and liquid vapour hydrocarbons, oxides of sulphur and etc.

DAMAGE FROM TRANSPORT-RELATED AIR POLLUTION

Health effect One 1998 study of Delhi, where the transport sector accounted for over 70 percent of airpollution, suggested that 7,500 premature deaths, 4 million hospital admissions and 242 million incidences of minor sickness(Xie, Shah, and Brandon 1998).

Epidemiological studies show that air pollution costs thousands of deaths and leads to a number of healthproblems in cities.

High Social CostThe UrbAirstudy by the World Bank, conducted in Greater Mumbai, Kathmandu Valley, Jakarta and Metro Manila, found that urban transport accounted for the majority of air pollutants, and the health impacts cost millions of dollars(Shah and Nagpal 1997).

World Bank study, on Mumbai, Shanghai, Manila, Bangkok, Krakow and Santiago, showed that the total social cost of air pollution in these cities was as high as US$2.6 billion(Lvovsky et al 2000)

Waste of non-renewable energyThere is a general consensus that oil is going to remain a major transport fuel, and that the world has to confront the environmental implications of oil-based transport, for at least the next three to four decades. The latest figures indicate that oil accounts for more than 95 percent of total energy use in transport in almost all countries in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) (Fulton 2001)

Killing Earth-Global warming!

The fossil fuel combustion associated with transportation results in emissions of pollutants that cause damage to human health, agriculture and sensitive ecosystems, and contribute to global climate change

How to reduce it or stop it ?Government planning!Say no to petroleum!!Futuristic Car!!!New technology !!!!!!Gf boycott BFs car !!?

Government John Baird, Canadas Minister of the Environment, today unveiled Turning the Corner: An Action Plan to Reduce Greenhouse Gases and Air Pollution, which imposes greenhouse gas and toxic air pollution reduction targets on industry.

The Canada governments goal is an absolute reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 150 megatonnes by 2020about a 20% cut from current levels and an approximately 300 megatonnes reduction from projected 2020 levelsand cutting air pollution from industry in half by 201
