The pump cover part number was changed to accommodate interim case changes that occurred. The fol- lowing part numbers for the pump cover based on model year: 1997-2003 24204303 2004-2006 24232405 1997-2003 pumps are interchangeable if you use GM Plug Kit #24232339. This is a simple plug kit. Remove cup plug, install the one inch slug and reinstall the cup plug. If a kit is not available from your parts supplier you can make your own. NP271D Transfer CaseIntermittent Grinding Noise, Loss of MPGCustomer complaint: “Sometimes there is a grinding noise, it seems to be right under the drivers seat,the noise is not consistent”.

What was discovered is the thick snap ring on the transfer case output shaft was broken. It would al-low the transfer case gear train to float and engage the front drive shaft even though 2WD mode was selected.

Repair: Remove rear driveshaft & tail housing off the transfer case & replace the snap ring.

68RFEClank Noise from Drive to NeutralThe complaint is a metallic-type clank that only occurs when shifting from drive to neutral. The noise is the same in 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive, and seems to get worse as the transmission temperature rises. No codes present for the engine or transmission. Disassembling the transmission reveals nothing that should have caused the clanking noise: no broken parts, worn splines, or excessive endplay prob-lems.

The underdrive and low/reverse clutch are applied in drive. When the shifter goes from drive to neu-tral, theunderdrive clutch releases so quickly that it creates a rollover effect. This causes the clank.

There’s a manufacturer TSB #21-010-12, dated July 16, 2012, for the transmission and transfer case group, stating that this is “normal” by factory standards. The TSB addresses a complaint of a “clank noise” when shifting the transmission from drive to neutral. It applies to 2011–12 Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 series trucks, plus Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and International trucks equipped with an RFE transmission.

#1588The correction requires an updated valve body separator plate, part number 52120004AB. The slot was changed to an orifice to slow the release of the underdrive clutch when shifting from drive to neutral or park. Simply update the separator plate to get rid of the clank when shifting from drive to neutral. But this only affects model years with the new solenoid configuration.

When PCB is activated it regulates oil to the PCB modulator valve. From there, line oil is directed to the converter pressure modulator valve and to the O/D servo control valve. The oil that’s directed to the converter modulator valve is filtered using the PCB passage filter. To avoid trash or material in the converter pressure modulator valve train install a new PCB passage filter druing rebuild.

Flash programming allows the ECU software to be updated without replacing the ECU. Flash calibra-tion updates for specific vehicle models/ECUs are released as field-fix procedures described in individ-ual service bulletins. Flash Calibration updates can only be applied to the vehicle/ECU combination for which they are intended. ECUs have internal security that will not allow them to be prorammed with another ECU’s information.

Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is a Toyota term used to describe integrated computerized devices re-sponsible for managing the operation of a system or subsystem. For the purposes of this bulletin, the term “ECU” is used as a generic label for the following SAE J1930 standard references:

FNR5P0706 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit FailureThere is a TSB 09-13-7 that talks about the adjustment of the range switch and checking the ground for the code P0706 Range Switch circuit code. Also the TSB want you to inspect the pins in connector C134 for corrosion.

The connector C134 is shown in the image below and is located just below the fuse/relay box in the engine compartment. This connector has problem with corrosion and water intrusion.

Problem with this connecter can cause P0706 range switch codes as in the TSB but also the speed sensor and solenoids for the transmission go through this connector. Intermittent solenoid and speed sensor codes are also common to be caused by this connector.

It would be wise to inspect this connector before diagnosing transmission circuit codes and during transmission repairs. Clean terminals and apply dielectric grease to prevent corrosion.
