2001 Pictorial Review Transmission and Distribution conference and Exhibition y all measures, the sixteenth IEEE/PES T&D Conference and Exposition, which was held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, continued to dis- play its prominence as an industry showcase. Despite the downturn in the economy, and the tragic events of September 11, the show featured an all-time high of 519 exhibiting companies. Although total atten- dance was slightly down, exhibitors were very pleased that the exposition was well attended by util- ity decision makers. On Sunday evening, the 1,300 attendees were treated to a low-country barbecue feast at the historic Georgia Freight Depot and World of Coke. Enter- tainment featured gospel singers, bluegrass music, and carnival games under a brilliant moon and a blanket of stars that covered the outdoor courtyard. Add to that a taste of Coca Cola from around the world, it was truly southern hospitality at its finest. The opening reception at the Georgia Freight Depot wai On Monday morning the conference started with a distinguished panel exchanging their views of how their companies are preparing to deal with the future. The panel included: Allen Franklin, chairman, presi- dent, and CEO, Southern Company; John Rice, presi- dent and CEO, GE Power Systems; Paula Rosput, president, AGL Resources; David Slump, vice presi- dent, ABB; and Ian Davis, vice president, Nation Grid. The conference luncheon followed immediately featuring Bernie Ebbers, president and CEO, World- Com, as the keynote speaker. He shared the trials '_ and tribulations regarding deregulation in the tele- com industry, allowing the audience draw its own analogies to the electric utility industry. cial panel sessions. Two super sessions addressed Wtoday's world of e-commerce in the utility world andderegulation.

For the first time, the IEEE PES Insulated Con-ductors Committee (ICC) held is annual meeting inconjunction with the T&D Show. Enjoying all the benefits of theT&D Show, ICC attendees still had time to tend to their normal com-mittee business, host an ICC reception, and conduct panel sessions.The ICC functions were well attended and many nonmembers werealso able to learn more about this important organization.

The international reception was hosted on Tuesday evening at theEgyptian Ballroom at the fabulous Fox Theatre. Approximately 1,000people from over 59 countries feasted the cuisine provided by the RitzCarlton as the final dress rehearsal of the opera unfolded next door.Entertained by live music, it was an enchanting evening for all.

Did I mention tours? Companions chose activities ranging from atour of historic Stone Mountain to beautiful Callaway Gardens andFranklin Roosevelt's little white house at Warm Springs and anassortment of activities in a special lounge set aside just for the com-panions. More than once was heard the gentle nudge "Gentlemen, kissyour wives goodbye."

The Power Engineering Society gave special thanks to GeorgiaPower and Southern Company for hosting this major event.
