• Transitioning from vender-owned open source to community-owned open source

• Transitioning from data warehouse to content rich informatics platform

• Transitioning from pharmaceutical application centric to general medical research community

• VisionRealizing the promise of translational biomedical research

• MissionThe tranSMART Foundation enables effective sharing, integration, standardization, and analysis of heterogeneous data from collaborative translational research by mobilizing the tranSMART open-source and open-data community

• Goals Establish and sustain tranSMART as the preferred data sharing and analytics platform for translational biomedical research.Link academic, non-profit and corporate research communities for collaborative research facilitated by tranSMART.Align and grow a vibrant developer network around the scientific goals of the tranSMART community.Reduce barriers to entry through use of advanced technologies and an active marketplace.

tranSMART Development: Divergence vs Convergence

• Divergence is inevitable– Different focuses of use

– Different emphasis in development

– Different ideas in designing

• Convergence is essential – Need a stable and uniform core

– Need a commonly agreed development process

– Need a disciplined quality control

– Need a shared vision of the roadmap

Goal of the workshop : Building up Productive Convergence for Progressive Divergence

• A common understanding of the state of the art

• A collective designed and agreed development process and platform

• A agreed roadmap of development for next 6 and 12 months towards a stable tranSMART 1.x core system

• A shared vision of tranSMARTfuture direction beyond 1.x

• An organisational mechanism for delivering the core system

By the end of the workshop, we will have a young global development team with
