“Making Up” “Making up” is a phrase used among Catholic people who support their church by using the parish envelope system. When someone misses Mass they place their usual offering in their envelope and set it aside. The next time they attend Mass, they deposit two or more envelopes into the collection. “Making up” is really not a burden or additional sacrifice; it is simply a new habit. By adopting this method of weekly support, you provide the parish with a stable and reliable in-come.

Catholic University of America The Catholic University of America is unique among universities in the United States—even among Catholic universities. Estab-lished by Pope Leo XIII and the U.S. bishops in 1887, it is the na-tional university of the Catholic Church. In addition to alumni who hail from this diocese, Catholic University claims one third of the U.S. bishops and 12,000 priests and religious alumni. In Washing-ton, DC, the University provides an education based in the Catholic intellectual tradition to almost 7,000 students through its 12 schools. Next weekend (September 9-10), we will be taking up the National Collection for The Catholic University of America. Your support will enable Catholic University to expand its impact in preparing the next generation of leadership for our Church and na-tion. We appreciate your generosity.

Join the Diocesan Gospel Choir "Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!" (Ps 95:1). Join the renowned Diocesan Gos-pel Choir! Rehearsals start September 12th. Contact Director Tonya Dorsey at [email protected].

The Samuel Group Who? What? Where? Discern your role in the church and the world. The Samuel Group discovers how to make decisions for life’s journey. The experience is for those ages 18 – 39. Partici-pants are encouraged to bring their unique questions, desires, strengths and weaknesses to God and learn to respond to His loving voice. Sessions launch on September 17th at St. Thomas More Church, 1439 Springdale Road, Cherry Hill from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. To register or for more information, visit http://www.camdendiocese.org/samuelgroup/ or email Sr. Dianna Higgins [email protected].

Stewardship Reflection Stewardship Values

“What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” (Matthew 16:26)

St. Francis of Assisi once said, “Remember, you are what you are in the eyes of God, and nothing else.” We often forget this Stew-ardship wisdom when we spend all of our time, talent and treasure to gain more of the world’s riches. We need to set our priorities based on God’s values and not the values of the material world.

Pastor’s Reflection Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achieve-ments of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. (U.S. Department of Labor web

page, August 24, 2017). Before ordination to the priesthood, I worked as a substitute teach-er in Atlantic City and a taxi driver. These were good preparations for priestly ministry. I have also worked as a waiter and busboy. I have labored clearing land for the expansion of Atlantic Community Col-lege in 1971. I worked four years as a janitor at my high school and for a time at Haddon Hall Hotel. I also have been a casino dealer of Blackjack where I made mad bank! I belonged to a union in Atlantic City and paid union dues and dis-cussed going on strike over pay. These days, the American worker seems forgotten and devalued. Many people have to work two jobs and that still is not enough to support a family, given the cost of health care. Many young men who have been incarcerated will find it diffi-cult to get and keep jobs, which puts the rest of us at risk. Because there is no work, though there is much that needs to be done in our country, young men and increasingly young women can be seduced by radicals, hate groups and gangs. These unemployed

youth are a sleeping army of potential violence waiting for a fuhrer. Catholic Social Justice teaching supports the right of all people to meaningful and sufficient work. The lack of will and imagination on the part of government and corporations speaks to the sin of greed and indifference which possess our capitalist so called democracy. Rage is building. I learned to work watching the adults around me work. I learned the discipline of work by working. Let us stand together with people around the world who advocate on behalf of workers: migrant workers who pick our fruits and vegetables in New Jersey, factory workers and fast food workers struggling for decent pay. Power to the People! Fr. Gerard
