Together with Starkstrom-Gerätebau, Sächsisch-Bayerische Starkstrom-Gerätebau and AM SGB, Smit Transformatoren B.V. forms the SGB-SMIT Group. The slogan of the SGB-SMIT Group is Partners in Power. This slogan justifiably reflects the professionalism, experience, technological knowhow, reliability and economic efficiency of the group of companies. As a group, we are able to develop and produce power transformers, ranging from 50 kVA to 1,200 MVA, and voltages up to 800 kV.
The product range includes oil-filled transformers, transverse controls, cast resin insulated transformers, compact stations and compensating and series coils. Mutual exchange of knowledge and experience is encouraged within the group.

History
SMIT transformers are installed all over the world. In 1913, Messrs Rosskopf, Bergsma and Smit established ‘N.V. Willem Smit & Co’s Transformatorenfabriek’ on Groenestraat in Nijmegen. The company started with 38 employees, and it grew steadily through the years. Other forward integrated businesses associated with N.V. Willem Smit and Smit Transformers and the transformer industry, such as Smit Draad, Smit Ovens and Lincoln Smitweld, were also established. All of these companies still operate wholly independently. In 2000, SMIT became part of the SGB-SMIT Group. In 2009, the service, maintenance and repair activities traditionally associated with the Smit Transformers product range relocated to the harbour with an exclusive quay situated on Energieweg in Nijmegen.

Smit Transformator Service
”Smit Transformator Service” is the service department of Smit Transformatoren B.V. and is responsible for service, diagnostics, maintenance and repair of oil-filled or cast resin transformers, regardless of the transformer size, make and rating. The specialists in the service department not only work in Nijmegen, the Netherlands but also internationally, where they conduct repair and maintenance work on all types and makes of transformers.
The service activities include the following:- oil sampling and analysis;- tap changer inspections and restoration of all makes, including by specialists who hold the MR Premium Service certifi cate;- replacement of drives and accessories;- testing and replacing bushings;- paper sampling and analysis;- upgrading by means of replacement or addition of coolers, fans and pumps;- thorough and sustainable repairs of leaks;- transportation and professional assembly of all sizes and makes;- oil treatment and regeneration;- diagnostic measurements and advice;- Spare parts or alternative custom-made parts.
Large-scale repairs on site on both transformers and tap changers are possible. A high voltage test unit also enables testing and diagnostics at site. The new location of ”Smit Transformator Service”, at the harbour on the Maas-Waal channel in Nijmegen, with an exclusive quay offers limitless logistical options for repairs and reconditioning, within their large facilities which includes two vacuum-drying ovens. Here the service team is supported by engineers from the transformer factory.

Diagnostics
Transformer conditioning and diagnosticsis a key element in the ”Smit Transformator Service” product and service range. Transformer condition monitoring and assessment is very important in ensuring continued transformer reliability. SMIT keeps customers pro-actively informed by performing diagnostic tests on site, using state of the art diagnostic equipment and mobile test units and comparing these results with their extensive historical database. These tests allows our engineers and service specialists to diagnose and assess the condition of a transformer, identifying faults at an early stage, and recommending and instituting the required maintenance or repairs required to ensure continued service or an extension in transformer life.
