• To develop understanding of and promote research on transformations to sustainabilitywhich are of significant social, economic and policy concern throughout the world and of great relevance to both academics and stakeholders.

• To build capacity, overcome fragmentation and have a lasting impact on both society and the research landscape by cultivating durable research collaboration across multiple borders (including across low- and high-income countries), disciplinary boundaries, and with practitioners and societal partners.

MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

Page 14: TRANSFORMATIONS TO SUSTAINABILITY WORKSHOP 2018 · SUSTAINABILITY WORKSHOP 2018: BEGINNINGS AND ENDINGS, ENDINGS AND BEGINNINGS Fukuoka 22–24 September 2018. Symbols of beginnings

• To advance the integration and synthesis of knowledge on transformations to sustainability through facilitated activities and support for purposeful interaction among the T2S research projects.

• To contribute to the building of a global research community around social transformations to sustainability and to connect them to other relevant communities of practice worldwide.

• To establish a sustainable, open resource base/platform for the academic and practitioner community, to support and stimulate learning and knowledge exchange, linking up with existing platform(s).

• To develop strategic communication with target audiences.

Objectives

• To build a shared understanding of the vision of the Transformations to Sustainability programme

• To extend and deepen an open community of researchers on transformations to sustainability

• To learn from the meeting of two generations of transdisciplinary projects on transformations to sustainability

• To share and develop concepts and measures of outcomes and impact in research for transformations to sustainability

• To develop a perspective and plans for programme-level activities and engagement in 2019 and beyond

But also….

• To discover and pursue common interests

• To engage with local/current issues and culture

• To tell stories

• To extend our personal and professional networks

• To be stimulated, motivated and inspired!

• To present the programme to a wider audience (three T2S sessions at the WSSF 2018)

Some ground rules

• Participate fully – everyone’s contribution is welcome and needed

• Avoid using disciplinary jargon

• Be conscious that English is not everyone’s first language

• Talk to people you don’t know

• Be present (mobile phones muted)

• Take breaks as needed

• Enjoy!

somewhere… by something…• Meet it, observe it, engage it• Let it tell you about a beginning

or an ending (or both)• Do NOT try to figure it out• Be back in your seats by 14:30

“Storytelling is as old as humanity itself. And in a modern world saturated with electronic media, nothing resonates quite so much as the personal narrative of a storyteller. In science, this narrative has a special role, especially because what we do so often seems mysterious to those outside our profession. Storytelling in science, whether of science valour or science beauty, provides a very human window into our world. Telling stories, simply and clearly, is the means by which we connect science with humanity.”

WORLD SOCIAL SCIENCE FORUM – TKN SESSION

CS1-15Tuesday 25 September, 14.20–16.20Room 503

In this interactive session, we draw on the work of three transdisciplinary research projects on ‘Transformations to Sustainability’ to reflect on (a) how power relations manifest to hold back transformations to sustainability or, conversely, how collective power is used for positive transformation, (b) how we engaged practically with power relations in our research, and (c) what we have learned from this for transformations to sustainability.

WORLD SOCIAL SCIENCE FORUM – BF-NORFACE T2S session

CS1-11Wednesday 26 September, 16.30–18.30Room 409

This session will focus on exploring the perspectives and insights offered by the social sciences vis-à-vis the challenges of climate change, sustainability and security. The keynote speaker will set out their view of the benefit of putting the social sciences at the heart of sustainability research and the contribution the social sciences can make to finding solutions, challenging assumptions and changing how we do research for sustainability. The Belmont Forum-NORFACE T2S projects leaders will present their intended contribution to social transformations and what they see as the main challenges ahead, in the near and longer term.

Keynote speaker: Melissa Leach, Institute of Development Studies, U. Sussex, UK
