Plan your Pathway

2016

THIS BOOK IS DESIGNED TO HELP PLAN

YOUR PATH

YOUR FUTURE

Begin looking at MATC’s articulation or transfer agreements. We have established these agreements with four-year colleges and universities to ensure that the transfer process flows as seamlessly as possible. Institutions accepting MATC programs are listed in this book and on the MATC website (matc.edu/student/currentstudent/credittransfer/index.cfm).

Articulation agreements provide opportunities for MATC students to take courses here and have confidence that credits will transfer to a four-year institution. This means that you are at MATC for two years completing an associate degree program, and then you’re able to enter the four-year institution with junior-year standing. You’ll typically have two years of education remaining to complete your bachelor’s degree and begin your future career.

What You Need to Know About TransferringIt is important that your two-year college be accredited.Four-year colleges and universities accept transfer credit only from schools formally recognized by a regional, national or professional educational agency. MATC is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, Commission on Institutions of Higher Education.

To decide where to transfer, students should:• Learn which four-year colleges/universities offer

articulation agreements with MATC• Research the four-year schools, including tuition and

housing costs• Talk with admissions/transfer representatives from

four-year institutions• Visit the campuses

Tips to find out how many credits could transfer to a four-year institution:

• Contact four-year colleges/universities as early as possible in the transfer process to review their requirements

• Find out if the four-year school’s admissions office provides an unofficial evaluation of credits

• For credit transfer into a University of Wisconsin System school, see wisconsin.edu/transfer/

• Remember that the four-year college/university makes the final decision about which MATC classes and programs will transfer

Financial aid does not transfer exactly from institution to institution. Each school can have a different method of calculating aid, so you should explore your financial aid options when researching the colleges and universities. Transfer students may be eligible for federal or state grants, work-study or loans based on financial need. Also find out if the four-year school offers scholarships for transfer students.

You will need to submit an official MATC transcript to the four-year school. The four-year college/university will require that you send your most recent transcript, plus official transcripts from all colleges you’ve attended, with your application. Some institutions may require that your high school transcript and standardized test scores also be sent, usually if you have less than one or two years of college courses.

The first, and probably most important, step: Identify the program-to-career pathways you might want to take. Be clear on the career you want to pursue and identify all the pathways to get you there scholastically.

FIVE STEPS TO CREATING ACOLLEGE LIST

STEP 1. Ask yourself some questionsAnswering questions like these will help you focus your search for a college or university:What am I interested in?How do I spend my free time? What do I feel passionate about? How do I learn best? What do I think I want to do in the future?

STEP 2. Get to know the optionsOne resource is College Search Step-by-Step at bigfuture.collegeboard.org, where you can learn about categories of four-year institutions and answer questions about your preferences. You will also find in-depth information about searching for colleges and universities, along with advice from students and educators.

Information from bigfuture.collegeboard.org

STEP 3. Decide what matters most to youFor some students, sports and activities are very important. Other students want a challenging academic environment. Look at your answers to the questions in Step 1. What do they say about you and what you may like in a four-year school?

STEP 4. Search for schoolsYou can use College Search to find four-year institutions that match your preferences. Search by location, majors, size and more. The website bigfuture.collegeboard.org offers guidance to help you along the way.

STEP 5. Add colleges/universities to your listCheck out individual profiles of the institutions that come up in your College Search Step-by-Step results. When you see a school you like, click on Add to List to save it to a favorites list. You can return to it later and refine your list as you go along.

OR BACCALAUREATE DEGREEThis requires completing a four- or five-year college program, such as a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. Other types of bachelor’s degrees include the Bachelor of Fine Arts or Bachelor of Architecture degree.

This is a two-year degree and can be an Associate of Arts (A.A.) or Associate of Science (A.S.). Some students who earn this degree transfer to a four-year college/university to earn a bachelor’s degree. Others complete associate degrees to directly enter the workforce. Community colleges, technical colleges and some four-year colleges offer these degrees.

ASSOCIATE IN ARTS DEGREE OR ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE DEGREE (A.A. OR A.S.)Designed to meet requirements for the first two years of a bachelor’s degree, credits transfer to four-year institutions. Courses for these programs are numbered 200-299.

ASSOCIATE IN APPLIED SCIENCE DEGREE (A.A.S.)These programs prepare students to begin working in specialized fields and typically take two years to complete when pursued full time. Courses are numbered 100-199 and selected credits can be transferred; students should check with the college/university they plan to attend.

TECHNICAL DIPLOMASStudents prepare for a specific job or upgrade their skills through a technical diploma. Most can be completed within a year of full-time study. Many diploma courses are numbered in the 300-series and require more time in hands-on activities. Some diploma programs have courses in the 100-series and those credits can be applied to related associate degree programs.

CERTIFICATESCertificate programs provide focused learning that will enhance your employability and strengthen core skills. Many can be completed in one semester of full-time study. Courses are typically in the 100-series, but some are in the 200- and 300-series. For many MATC certificate programs, the credits earned can be applied toward an MATC technical diploma or associate degree program.

Universal Transfer Agreements enable MATC students to seek a bachelor’s degree that can be in a different field than their MATC program. Any MATC associate degree can transfer into a Universal Transfer Agreement.Specific degree completion options may be required; discuss details with your advisor.

PROGRAM-TO-PROGRAM TRANSFERMATC students interested in a bachelor’s degree related to their MATC program should explore the Program-to-Program Transfer options. These four-year schools accept specific MATC degree programs for transfer. Talk with your advisor to learn more.

UNIVERSAL TRANSFER

HISTORICALLY BLACKCOLLEGES/UNIVERSITIES(HBCUs)Complete your first two years at MATC and transfer with junior standing to one of 10 partner HBCUs throughout the United States. Thanks to historic agreements, MATC students have the opportunity to complete bachelor’s degrees at these HBCUs.

TYPES OF COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIESPUBLIC AND PRIVATE COLLEGES Public colleges are funded by local and state governments and usually offer lower tuition rates than private colleges, especially for students who are residents of the state where a college is located. Private colleges rely mainly on tuition, fees and private sources of funding. Private donations can sometimes provide generous financial aid and scholarship packages for students.

PUBLIC AND PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES Public and private universities often are larger and offer more majors and degree options (bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees) than colleges. Most universities contain several smaller colleges, such as colleges of liberal arts, engineering or health sciences. These colleges can prepare you for a variety of careers or for graduate study.

FOR-PROFIT COLLEGES/UNIVERSITIES These are businesses that offer a variety of degree programs that typically prepare students for a specific career. They tend to have higher costs than public institutions. Credits earned may not transfer to other schools, so be sure to check with the admissions office at each institution.

SPECIALIZED-MISSION COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) focus on educating African-American students. Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) are institutions where at least 25% of the full-time undergraduate students are Hispanic. HBCUs and HSIs may offer programs, services and activities targeted to the students they serve.Source: Collegeboard.org

ALVERNO COLLEGEExpect more out of college to get more out of your careerTransfer students comprise half of Alverno’s student body, so why do so many students just like you choose Alverno? Because their success both in and out of college results from Alverno’s small class sizes, dedicated professors and individualized learning.Classroom LearningAt Alverno, the average class size is 20 students. That’s because students learn best in an active, engaged environment. Rather than large lecture halls and individual desks, you’ll find smart classrooms with tables and chairs, helping to foster collaborative learning. Rather than standardized tests to measure your progress, you’ll engage in in-depth, semester-long projects, allowing you to dive deeper into the learning process and make learning your own. In other words, Alverno offers a real-world learning environment where students learn from actually doing, rather than simply reading and memorizing.Personalized LearningAlverno also bridges classroom learning to real-world work experiences through required internships and a multitude of co-curricular activities. For more than 40 years, Alverno has made internships a critical component of education. That’s because most people learn best by doing, so real-world application cements the learning process and also helps to build a

professional network. At Alverno, 100% of the students complete at least one internship or field placement, and the Internship Office is connected to more than 2,000 worksites. Alverno students have a better chance at connecting with a site that meets the demands of their discipline and the specifics of their career goals. At Alverno, professors are thoroughly engaged in each student’s learning. It’s not uncommon for faculty to work with students outside of the classroom on various research projects, service-learning activities, leadership and mentoring initiatives, or even recommend and find funding for students to attend national professional conferences.Career SuccessAlverno students graduate with the precise career-ready skills – problem solving, analysis for critical thinking, effective communication, group collaboration – employers are seeking. Students also graduate with real-world work experience gained through internships and effective co-curricular activities. As a result, Alverno grads find employment quickly after graduation AND in jobs directly related to their major.

TransferstudentfoundrightfitatUWMAmy Siever was looking for a different experience when she transferred from Concordia University in rural Texas to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. “I liked the urban environment,” said Siever, a recent UWM graduate, who majored in history. “There was a lot to do here. I liked having places to shop and being able to visit museums. I liked that the university is so close by so

many parks. There’s a little bit of everything.”Siever is one of hundreds of students transferring to UWM every year. In fact, UWM is the top transfer destination in the University of Wisconsin system. The university makes it easy for transfer students to enter with a variety of options. For example, UWM has a guaranteed transfer program that fits the needs of many qualified students. Articulation agreements with other Wisconsin universities and technical colleges also help make transferring previously earned credits seamless.Admission to UWM as a transfer student typically requires at least an overall C (2.0 on a 4.0 scale) grade-point average on 12 or more transferable credits. For those who don’t yet have 12 or more credits, the university also reviews high school records. Transfer students then work with advisors to see how they can gain admission into their major program. Different majors have specific GPA and credit requirements.

For more information on how to transfer, see www4.uwm.edu/future_students/transfer/special_programs.cfm.Siever found a good fit in the university’s history department. “I like finding untold stories, and sharing those with everybody,” she said.“It took me a while to learn my way around campus because my previous school was so small, but within a few weeks, I found I could get anywhere on campus pretty quickly and I got to know my East Side neighborhood,” she added. Like many other UWM students, Siever also worked while getting her degree. She spent two years in the call center in Admissions and also served as a campus ambassador, helping link students to the campus resources she’d discovered. Her own experiences as a transfer student helped fuel her enthusiasm for the campus and the many activities available. “I found there were so many organizations I could be part of, even as a transfer student. There are definitely opportunities for students to be involved here,” she said. “I loved working in Admissions and sharing information about this place with other people. It’s a really great feeling that I can help them take the next step in their life.”
