EDITORIAL NOTE

This volume, which includes three of the papers read to the society this year, has an eighteenth and nineteenth century emphasis which will be welcomed by some and regretted by others of our members. Another matter of frequent and sometimes acid comment to the editors is the balance between papers about Lancashire and about Cheshire; Lancashire clearly wins this year. Where are Cheshire's local historians? It is hoped that Dr Thacker's paper will not only interest our members, but will achieve a wider circulation as an outline guide to Chester Diocesan Records; extra copies of this have been printed, but, as always, off-prints of all the papers will be available from the Honorary Publications Secretary. We are glad to publish several 'short notes', and hope that more authors will contribute under this heading in the future.

The Council of the society wishes to thank Mr Bromley for preparing the decennial index, and Mrs Grace Wyatt for indexing this volume.

Council has decided to print a list of the society's members in this volume, although there are no plans to revive this as a regular feature.
