3 InstallationIn orderfortheTRAKTORAUDIO 2toworkproperlywithyourcomputer,thefollowing two programs are automatically installed on your system during the softwareinstallationprocess:

• The TRAKTORAUDIO 2driver.Thishandlesthecommunicationbetweentheaudio interface and your computer.

• The Control Panelsoftware: • In Windows,theControlPanelsoftwareallowsyoutoadjustperfor-

mancesettings,preampsettings,andtoperformdiagnostics. • In MacOS X,theperformancesettingsandpreampsettingsare

controlledfromthesystem'sAudioMIDIsetup,locatedintheUtilities folder.ThereisnoControlPanelsoftwarefortheTA2onMacOS X.

!%Ifyouarefamiliarwiththeinstallationprocedureandthegeneralconfigu-rationofUSB-drivenaudiodevicesonyourcomputer,youcanskipthischapter and continue with registration chapter 3.4.

10. Oncetheinstallationhasbeenperformedsuccessfully,youwillbeprompted to restart your Mac. Click the Restartbuttontocompletetheinstallation.

3.3 ConnectingtheHardwareBeforeconnecting thehardware,make sure youhave installedall softwarecomponentsasdescribedinchapter3.2.Onceyouhave installedthesoft-ware:

► ConnecttheTA2toaUSB2.0portonyourcomputerusingtheUSBcableincludedinthepackage.

→ Afterconnectingthesoundcardtoyourcomputer,theUSBdriverswillbeinstalledonyourcomputerautomaticallyandtheTRAKTORAUDIO 2soundcardshouldbereadytousestraightaway.Proceedwithregistra-tion chapter 3.4. ForWindowsXP,seeseparatesectionbelow.

XPUsersOnly:CompletingtheDeviceDriverInstallationUpondetectionof thenewhardware,Windowscompletes thedevicedriverinstallation:

1. WindowsXPwillidentifytheTRAKTORAUDIO 2soundcard.ChooseNo if Windows asks you to search the internet for a driver.

2. Duringdevicedriverinstallation,aWindowsmessagemaycallattentiontothefactthattheTRAKTORAUDIO 2driverhasnotpassedWindowsLogoTesting.Thisisanexpectedbehavioranddoesnotindicateaprob-lem.Toproceed,clickContinue Anyway.

→ Yourcomputerwilldisplaya"New Hardware found"message.Subsequently,anothermessagereading"Your devices are ready to use"willnotifyyouthatthe device driver installation was completed successfully.

► Afteryouhavecompletedthedriverinstallationprocedure,thedriverinstallerwillstartagain.Thisisintendedbehavior.Repeattheprevioussteps in order to install all required driver components.

→ Allsoftwarecomponentsarenowinstalled,andtheTRAKTORAUDIO 2shouldbereadytouse.Proceedwithregistrationchapter3.4.

3.4 RegistrationRegisteringtheTRAKTORAUDIO 2isnotmandatory.Nevertheless,registra-tion is recommended for support inquiries or in case of theft. As a registered user,youwillalsobenefitfromexclusiveincentivesandinsiderspecials.

!!ToregisteryourTRAKTORAUDIO 2ontheNativeInstrumentswebsite,youwillneedtheserialnumberfromtheproductactivationsticker.ThisislocatedonthebottompanelofyourTRAKTORAUDIO 2.

4 BasicConfigurationIn order for theTRAKTORAUDIO 2 to operate as your computer'sdefaultaudiooutputdevice,youwillneedtoselectitwithinthesystem'saudioprefer-ences.Findtheinstructionsinchapter4.1.

For informationonusing theTRAKTORAUDIO 2as yourmusic software'sdefaultaudiooutputdevice,seechapter4.2.

4.1 SelectingtheTRAKTORAUDIO 2asYourSystem'sDefaultAudioOutputDevice

Inthefollowingsections,youwilllearnhowtosetuptheTRAKTORAUDIO 2asyourcomputer'sdefaultaudiooutputdevice.

4.1.1 WindowsXP

1. Open Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound.

2. In the Sounds and Audio Devices Propertieswindow,selecttheAudiotab.

3. From the Default Devicedrop-downlistofoptions,selectTRAKTORAU-DIO 2.

4. Click OKtoconfirmyourselectionandclosethewindow.

→ TRAKTORAUDIO 2isnowselectedasthedefaultaudiooutputdevice.

4.1.2 WindowsVista,Windows7

1. Open Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound.

2. In the SoundControlPanel,selectthePlaybacktab.

3. ChoosetheTRAKTORAUDIO 2stereooutputchannel(ChA,Out1|2orChB,Out3|4)you'dliketouseasyourcomputer'sdefaultaudiooutputbyclickingthecorrespondingentry.

4. Click Set Default.

5. Click OKtoconfirmyourselectionandclosethewindow.

1. Open the System Preferences under the gray Apple Icon menu in the top left corner of your screen.

2. In the Hardwarecategory(secondrowfromtop),selectSound.

3. In the Soundcontrolpanel,selecttheOutputtab.

4. ChooseTRAKTORAUDIO 2fromthelistofavailablesoundcards.

5. Close the panel.

→ TRAKTORAUDIO 2isnowselectedasthedefaultaudiooutputdevice.

4.2 UsingtheTRAKTORAUDIO 2asanAudioOutputDevice with Music Software

BeforeusingtheTRAKTORAUDIO 2withmusicproductionorDJsoftware,youwillneedtosetitupasyoursoftware'soutputdevice.Mostmusicpro-duction and DJ programs provide direct access to the soundcard properties in the audio and MIDI setup section of their preferences dialog. Please refer to the documentation of your music production or DJ software for information on howtoconfigureaudioandMIDIinterfaces.

6 AdvancedConfiguration

On WindowsAll advancedconfiguration settingsonWindowscanbeaccessed from theControlPanelsoftware,whichwasinstalledonyourcomputerduringthesoft-wareinstallationprocedureinchapter3.YoushouldopentheControlPanelonceyouhaveinstalledthedrivers,connectedthehardwaretoyourcomputer,andsetuptheinterfaceasyourdefaultaudiooutputdevice(seechapter4).Inthischapter,youwilllearnabouttheControlPanelandwhatyoucandowithit.Proceedwithchapter6.1.

!%If you experience problemswith your setup, please refer to theAudioTroubleshootingGuide,whichyoucanaccessfromtheInformation section oftheControlPanel'sDiagnosticspage,oropenitdirectlyfromthesoft-ware'sdocumentationfolder.

OnMacOS XOnMacOS X,theadvancedaudioandMIDIsettingsareaccessedfromtheMacOS XAudioMIDISetup, located in theApplications > Utilities folder. Open the Audio MIDI Setup once you have connected the hardware to your computer,installedthedrivers(chapter3),andsetuptheinterfaceasyourdefaultaudiodevice(seechapter4).

6.1 AdvancedConfigurationonWindows(ControlPanel)

The Control Panel software allows you to change the driver's performancesettings,monitorperformance,anddetecterrors.ToopentheControlPanel:

► Navigate to Start > All Programs > Native Instruments > TRAKTOR AUDIO 2 Driver > Control Panel.

!!IfyoucannotfindtheControlPanel,thesoftwareismostlikelynotinstalled.Inthiscase,please(re-)installthesoftwareasdescribedinchapter3.

6.1.1 AudioSettingsPage

In the Audio Settingspage,youcanconfiguretheaudiolatencyandsamplerate,andmonitorthedevice'sstatus.

The Audio Processingsectionsetsparametersfortheanalog-to-digital/digital-to-analogconversiondonebyyouraudiointerface.Ithastwomenus:

• Sample Rate:Chooseasampleratethatiscompatiblewithyourmusicap-plicationandbestsuitedtoyourcomputingpower.Ahighersamplerateimprovestheaudioquality,butalsocauseshigherCPUload.Bydefault,thesamplerateissetto44100 Hz(CDquality).

!%Thesampleratedefineshowmanysamplesareplayed/recordedperonesecond of sound. A higher sample rate results in higher audio quality; however,44100 Hz(asusedforrecordingaudioCDs)isacommonset-ting and absolutely sufficient for most tasks. • Internalmixing(withoutanexternalDJmixer):YoumixtracksinsideyourDJing software and send the output to channel A of the TRAKTOR AU-DIO 2,whilechannelBisconnectedtoyourheadphonesformonitoringyour second digital deck.

• Externalmixing:BothchannelsAandBofyourTA2areconnectedtoseparatemixerchannelsofaDJmixer.YouuseyourDJmixerformixingtracks,andyourheadphonesareconnectedtoyourDJmixerformonitor-ingtheseconddeck'soutput.

8.2 HowtoCheckWhethertheTRAKTORAUDIO 2 Drivers are Installed Correctly

WindowsOpen Start > All Programs > Native Instruments > TRAKTOR AUDIO 2 Driver. ThereyouwillfindthehelperapplicationControlPanel.Makesurethatthedevice is connected to the computer and open the Control Panel. If all the drop-downmenusaregrayedout(i.e.,therearenopresetsinthepresetdrop-downlistandnosampleratevaluestochoosefrom)theremustbesomethingwrong with the connection. If the TRAKTOR AUDIO 2 Driver entry in the Na-tiveInstrumentsfolderoftheStartMenuismissing,thedriverismostprob-ablynotinstalled.

• Ifthedriverisnotinstalled,youcaninstallitasdescribedinchapter3.

• Ifthedriverisnotrecognized,checkyourUSB2.0connectionasde-scribedinchapter8.3.

• AsanyotherUSBdevice,thedriverinstallsexactlyforoneUSBport.IfyouconnecttheTRAKTORAUDIO 2toanotherport,astandardWindows dialog opens in which you can install the driver to that port. If youhavepreviouslyinstalledthedriveronyourcomputeronce,Windowswillfindtherightdriversitselfoncethatyoustartthedriverinstallationprocedure.Ifyoucanceltheinstallationprocedure,thedriverwillnotbeinstalled and the interface will not work on that port.

• Ifyoudonotknowwhetherdriverswereinstalledcorrectly,itisadvis-abletostartthesetupprogramoftheTRAKTORAUDIO 2again(seechapter3).Ifthesetupprogramstatesthatitwillfirstuninstallthedrivers,youalreadyhaveinstalledthedriversonyourcomputer.Inthiscase you can connect the device to any other USB port and Windows will findtherightdriverwheninstallingtheTRAKTORAUDIO 2onanotherUSB port.

MacOS XOnMacOS X,opentheSystemPreferences,anddouble-clicktheNI USB Audio icon from the Others section. The NI USB Audio panel should display the interface connected and some additional diagnostics data. If the device is connectedtoyourMacbutnotdetectedbythesystem,thepanelwillreadNo NI USB Audio Device connected.

10.1 About Latency and BuffersWhenconvertingaudioinformationtodigitalandviceversa,theaudiodriverneedstostorethedatainbufferpackages(audiobuffers)whicharethensenttoandprocessedbytheCPUofyourcomputer.Thehigherthebuffersize,thelongerittakesforasignaltofinallyarriveattheoutputasaudio.Youmightexperience thisas late responsebetweenhittingakeyonacontrollerwhichcontrols music software on your computer and hearing the sound at the output.
