Contractors
• Bring logistics and site know-how, experienced staff, materials, small plant, equipment, operational and safety management, ‘quick
fix’ experience, supervision experience and foresight • Act as “Client”, negotiating contracts and variations • Usually visit students prior to the event • Fund materials, plant & equipment, own staff and accommodation
Contractor costs • Depends on number of projects • Between £3.5-7k/project + staff costs + travel +
accommodation (£55.00 pppn) • Resources per event – PM, Carpenter, Steelfixer • Resources per project – Graduate • Staff costs off set against training budget • Claim against CITB Levy • Costs reduced if supply chain involved
• Design packages being developed for “plug and play” • Contractors invited to create new projects (defined as
“pilot” work)
Recommendation • To start “keep it small” then grow
e.g. small bridge (6m) to large bridge (21m Millau Bridge) • Choose projects within area of partners’ expertise and use
network of contacts for supplies and support • Consider JV with other contractors
Infinity Bridge Millau Bridge
Others’ costs University:
– £175.00 weekly student charge – staff time – residential costs (max £55.00 pppn) – travel for students and staff – admin and preparation
Consulting engineers:
– staff time – residential costs (max £55.00 pppn) – travel
(design preparation, scaling, modelling, student pack, development etc.)
Contractor benefits
• Recruitment pipeline • Staff development • Strengthens brand • Gives something back to academia • Academic links • CSR • Tender support
Design engineer benefits
• Assists in recruiting • Develops talent • Test design ideas at smaller scale • Identifies “tricky” processes • Builds relationships
University benefits
• Innovative education • Integrated into degree • High profile, popular with industry • Student satisfaction: “highlight of degree” • Staff experience (theorists taste real life) • Industry support for curriculum change • Evaluations positive for staff and students
What it’s meant to me... “This is one of the best things I have done in my three years of being at the University. Brings textbooks into reality.”
Anil Joshi, Nottingham University “"The Constructionarium spurred my interest to pursue engineering as a career by demonstrating how dynamic each day at work can be."
Jenny Austin, ICL “Whatever I end up doing, I definitely want to be involved in what happens on site."
Nicola Testo, Leeds University
“We have found that Constructionarium positively influences students towards careers in engineering and is seen as an exemplar of best practice for other departments in the engineering department.”
Professor David Nethercott, Imperial College
Hilary Pollock - CITB

FEEDBACK
• Key learning points were the wide variety of job roles within the construction industry
• How important is it to get students to think about skills they may have acquired whilst taking part in projects within school eg teamwork and decision making
• The amount of different professional roles in construction surprised me • The willingness of industry representatives to get involved in schools and promote
the sector. • New ways of bringing pupils on – tapping in to industry passion – making it real and
relevant • It was excellent to get an all-round understanding – the whole picture of the
construction industry • Reinforced belief that young people need more encouragement to believe they can
succeed in these subject areas
• To encourage the region’s young people to consider a career in construction and engineering
• Raise awareness and profile of the construction and engineering industries
• Develop key skills and employability skills in a working context
• Raise awareness of work related learning and enterprise
• Provide an opportunity for collaborative working between industry and education
• Provide opportunities for professional development of both industry and education professionals

STUDENTS: ‘It was fun and I learned a lot but I felt kind of stressed’ ‘It has helped me a lot with my confidence and presentation skills’ TEACHERS: ‘The Eco Wonder Competition is a great way for students to learn and develop skills. My students thoroughly enjoyed the tasks and brought a lot away from it such as team building, modelling skills, CAD/CAM skills’ ‘The project opened the pupils’ eyes to careers they didn’t know existed … it has fired their imagination and expectations.’
EMPLOYERS: ‘This is the first time in my career that I have seen something that really engages schools with engineering disciplines that is both informative and fun. This is something we need to continue!’ Clive Leadbetter, GeneralManager, A-one+ JUDGES: ‘The project gives the pupils enough insight into the industry to make them realise that there is much more to construction than just builders on a muddy site … especially in attracting those with a professional outlook.’ ‘The project has allowed students to research different careers and gain an understanding of different job roles.’ ‘The whole experience was enlightening. I was unaware of the marvellous potential and talent we have in our schools.’
