ADPC’s Training and Capacity Building Strength

As the leading regional resource organization, ADPC continues to address the training needs and capacity development challenges in disaster management in the region and beyond. Throughout the years, over 6,000 ADPC alumni have completed the ADPC training courses and are playing leading and significant roles in disaster risk reduction initiatives and interventions around the world.

Through its multi-disciplinary approach, ADPC has been designing training curriculum and conducting courses in a wide range of disaster management disciplines. To meet new needs and challenges posed by disasters, ADPC has been paving the way in developing training courses in emerging and topical disaster risk reduction areas. It has been ADPC’s ongoing and continued endeavor in the course improve-ment process that has led to reviews and changes in topics and structures.

Drawing on its body and knowledge and expertise, ADPC has been designing and conducting specialized program-based and customized national training courses in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, East Timor, Fiji Islands, India, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Lao PDR, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, and Vietnam at the request of Governments and donors. ADPC offers customized courses to promote disaster risk reduction through its academic and partner institutions.

Established in 1986 at the initiatives of three UN agencies – United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UN Office for the Coordina-tion of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) is an organization which supports the advancement of safer communities and sustainable development, through implementing programs and projects that reduce the impact of disasters upon countries and communities in Asia and the Pacific. With more than 100 staffs from 20 different countries, ADPC’s activities cover four thematic areas: Climate Risk Management (CRM), Disaster Management System (DMS), Public Health in Emergencies (PHE), and Urban Disaster Risk Management (UDRM). ADPC also provides 20 regional training courses. Since its inception, ADPC has been pursuing its missions to mitigate the impact of disasters on communities and countries by raising awareness, enhancing knowledge and skills and facilitating exchange of information and expertise.

Three types of ADPC training courses: • Regional and International Courses: ADPC regularly conducts its regional flagship courses such as the trainings on disaster management and community-based disaster reduction. Meeting today's needs and challenges, ADPC also develops and delivers training courses on several emerging topical areas such as the application of GIS in disaster management, flood disaster risk management, earthquake vulnerability risk reduction, public health and emergency management, and early warning systems. These courses aim to facilitate understanding on concepts and principles of disaster management, and improve the knowledge and skills of disaster practitioners for effective applications in the light of regional disaster risk reduction needs.

• Program-based Courses: ADPC develops and delivers training courses under different programs and projects at both national and local level. The program-based courses are organized in collaboration with national level training organizations for specific aspects of disaster management.

• Tailor-made Courses: ADPC is actively engaged in bespoke in-countries training courses. These courses are developed and conducted on various disaster management-related topics specifically requested by governments, international and local NGOs, UN agencies, and private sector.
